I've never been a big fan of the format, but I'm not Earthworm Jim's daddy. Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Shiny founder Dave Perry had a few choice words about Sony's PSP and the UMD format -- mainly that it's a waste of money, time, and investment.

Perry told GamesIndustry.biz that Sony "need to restart the PSP program," and that the recent PSP remodel was a case of them putting their "head in the sand." By "taking out all of the motors and drives and stuff they have in there," Perry believes Sony can reduce manufacturing costs, and should begin fully supporting digital downloads.

So why hasn't it happened yet? That nasty albatross, known as retail.

"The truth is, the stores will not carry PSPs unless they feel they are going to get a piece of the action on the back end," he says. "And Sony has not come up with an innovative business model that can support that concept."

Here's the ball, Sony -- get on it.

I thin Sony should get out of the portables buisness entirly.

It's always been in Nintendo's favor, and Nintendo's the only company that's ever really been succesful at it. Sony trying to beat out Nintendo, who has years and years and years of expirence in the portable buisness, is a loseing battle.

I bought the psp a week after it came out and after a year, i traded it in for the DS. THe fact that the psp was sitting on a shelf not being played and the list of DS and GBA titles just seemed like the best choice.

Sony needs to stop making new formats. Period. It just makes them look like assholes. They are really running me amuck!

Yeah, take out the motors and drives and what, stick an 8GB flash drive in there? So you can hold like 4 games? Yeah that'll bring the cost down. And limit access to games to people with high speed internet. Even smarter. Out on the road? Want to get a new game? Sorry, maybe you can find a Wi-Fi hotspot and sit there for hours while a new game downloads.

I'm tired of UMD being blamed for the PSP's failure. UMD is just a disc. Yeah UMD *movies* were a stupid idea but that's completely unrelated to games on UMD.

It's like if Blu-ray completely failed as a pre-recorded movie format, that doesn't make it any less of a viable format for storing games or data. I don't know why people continue to make this connection.

The PSP sucks because they aren't making enough good games for it. It has nothing to do with its media format.

While UMD wasn't the greatest idea, I think Blu Ray was a good move.

So this guy thinks they should have completely changed the PSP when they redesigned it and make it incompatible with all existing games? Not only that but kill off the ability for existing PSP owners to buy new games?

Really?

@Skullivan But the media format DOES have to do with some of the problems of the PSP. It's not UMD that's the problem, it's the fact that it's a disc-based, motor driven, battery-eating, loading time laden method of playing games.
Certainly, the PSP Slim addresses the loading times a bit with the increase in internal memory, but the fact remains that the disc drive is hampering the battery life, and still putting load times on a PORTABLE system. Emphasis on portable.

I don't know about others, but I've been known on occasion to pull out my DS and play a few rounds of Puzzle League or knock off a few Pokemon battles while waiting for a doctor's appointment, or if I get somewhere too early or whatnot. It's times like that where the "pick up and play" ability of the DS shines. Waiting for my PSP to load every time isn't as appealing to me, so it usually stays home.

The problem is that sony doesn't make their media public, and they keep the rights over it. The only media that ever gets popular is the ones that NO ONE has rights over so all companies can use it freely

@mackisawesome: You're right. Cartridges were the same way, IIRC. Honestly, we're better off with optical disc formats and flash memory formats. They are easier for companies to use, too.

@ShawnKelfonne

So, you're saying Sony should of ditched the disc and should of gone for flash cards? Right, because 1gb flash cards are as cheap as discs. If they would of done that they would of been another Game Boy. The fact that they can hold so much data on those discs is what sets them apart. You would of never fit a GTA game on a card or Lumines, possibly. Full on 3D Ratchet and Clank?

Everyone needs to stop talking about a downloadable games only PSP. It's retarded. First off, it's highly unaccessible for those who don't have broadband just like skullavin said. I mean, sure. Flash memory has gone down in price, but have did you try and buy a 512MB card when the system was released? Shit was like $80.

The PSP isn't doing bad, anyways. The DS is dominating but the PSP isn't struggling. It's doing OK.

Umm, they already HAVE downloadable games on the PSP....they're NOT called NOT iso's and NOT roms... ;)

If there was a store online where I could drop $20 to get a 900KBPS download of a game, I'd do that in 1 second.

UMD is another lame product from Sony... YAPSF (Yet Another Proprietary Sony Format)..while the PSP itself is a fuckin' marvel of minaturization. If it were all solid-state it'd be dope as hell, and, if they topped thta off with a cheap/free dev-kit for bedroom studios they'd at least have a chance...

Hell, I got my PSP for free and even then its hard to call it a deal ;)

UMD >= balls.

Dave Perry hasn't been involved in a truly successful game since the mid '90s. What does he know about anything?

Just like the old englishman says "Ye in glass houses should not be the first to cast stones."

Flash memory works pretty well until you can sort out the high costs of optical media.

UMD is a storage solution for a portable that tries to be like a console. I mean, look at the games of the thing, is like all the games of the original playstation.

It would be too expensive to put so much data on a memory catridge. At least for now it is.

*And if they want to make a psp 2 in the future that will play ps2 games for example: UMD is still going to be a convenient way of storage solution and is going to be able to play games from the first psp.

I think its a great system-but its a shortage of games not the hardware. Sony needs to plan ahead when releasing a console/handheld to have a good software lineup planned. Thats the only real issue plaguing Sony

Are there people who don't think this? UMD is bulky and there are so many better options.

@vexed alex: Yes, Flash memory has gone down in price, and it will continue to do so. At the current time, a 2 GB USB flash drive is about $20. UMD discs range in size from 900 Mb to 1.8 GB. This time next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see those same 2 GB flash drives at about $10. It's definitely doable, and would make more sense than trying to keep UMD alive.

And be careful when trying to use "the next Gameboy" as an insult, because it was only the best selling handheld ever.

Digital Distribution is far enough off to make that statement pretty idiotic. Limiting yourself to digital distribution alone is suicide.

I dunno, I picked up a PSP recently, and I honestly don't mind the loading times. They're definitely not as bad as they were in the past. The only thing that currently bothers me about the UMDs are the fragility of the cartridges, and the relative noisiness of the disc drive.

Other than that, I have no qualms with the UMD as a video gaming format.

In fact, I'm enjoying myself quite a lot.
