Shining Force series comes to the DS photo

I was a Sega kid growing up. It's not like I didn't have Nintendo systems, it's just that the Sega systems appealed to me more. One of my favorite game series of the Sega Genesis days was the [big surprise here] strategy role-playing Shining Force series from Sega. And now we hear that the series is making a comeback on the DS.

Shining Force Feather is the name of the newest game, currently set for a 2009 release in Japan. Game|Life says that its a cross between tactical and action-oriented combat. Sadly, as of now, we have no screens or art to look at.

We do know that the character designs are in the right hands, with artists "pako" (Shining Force EXA and Rental Magica) and Noizi Ito (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) on board.

Hopefully this Flight Plan-developed title will also soon see a US release date soon.

Did you ever play Shining Force or any of its sequels? Would you enjoy a DS version?

Well...i've not-played Shining force 1 & 2, but I never beat any of them. Also in the process of playing through Shining Force Neo. I wouldn't mind a new SRPG Shining Force game though.

Even though I love my SNES, it was the Shining Force series and the Lunar series that made me wish I had a Genesis and Sega CD. This is definitely a win if I have ever seen one!

What's with this action oriented bullshit? Just bring it back to the good ol' days and make it a strategy rpg!

HAH! GUH! HUH! WHA!?

Shining Force I and II are everything games should be.

Too bad anything made after them blew donkey balls (I'm looking at YOU Shining Tears.

Please, oh please, oh please, make a Shining Force game without the shitty JRPG elements!

It's amazing how you young'uns are so optimistic about this new game.

The past Shining Force games, which were action rpgs, were COMPLETELY CRAP. PURE GARBAGE.

I'm with Trowbie, what is with the action rpg shit, is this what kids are into these days?

MAKE IT AN SRPG. BTW flight-plan better not suck on this game, because all their summon night games have been crap, especially that Twin Age game..........BARF.

Maybe I"m getting to old for gaming, but i'm not happy with the current state of gaming. BLEH.

Played Shining force 1, 2, in the Holy Ark, and 3 scenario 1. Still wished sega would bring over scenario 2 and 3 because SF3 is my favorite saturn game. I still want to play Shining tears and Shining force EXA even though I'm pretty sure they're bad.

I LOVED the old Shining Force games when they were tacticial RPGs. I tried one of the Action titles for the GBA, and it wasn't nearly the same. The fact that they are bringing it back a little bit makes me hopeful.

God no, please stop raping the Shining Force franchise in the face!! The last few games were utter bollocks, and could not compare to SFI or II on the Genesis. Why don't they just release SFIII since we here in the States only got to play the first part? It was the closest thing to the wonder that is SF. Anyone ever unlock all the secret characters in both I amd II?? The monster in II was CLASSIC!! Fire death, ho!!!

As long as it's Camelot doing a SRPG I think I'll live. Otherwise is's going to be Sega doing as sega does best.

Not that I'd advocate this (heh), but for those motivated to try out the pinnacle of the Shining Force series -- that being Shining Force 3 -- you can fire it up on a Saturn emulator fairly readily. Episode 1 was officially translated into English, and Episode 2 has a 99% complete English patch available. Sadly, Episode 3 still has a lot of work left on it, but that's still a lot of Shining Force goodness to jump into.

Like phantasy star, they became irrelevant once they went to action games.

Sega has spoiled not one, but TWO classic rpg franchises by making that jump. Such a waste.

Wait, an RPG on the DS that is NOT a re-release of a 15 year old game with slightly more polished graphics? I'm all kinds of happy and confused all at once.
