Shiggy to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at GDC photo

Shigeru Miyamoto is going to have himself a rather busy Game Developers Conference this year. On top of delivering what many are calling the conference's only keynote speech worth attending, the legendary developer will be honored at this year's GDC with a Lifetime Achievement Award, for -- well, just about everything that is good about gaming.

As far as I'm concerned, there ain't an honor you can throw at Miyamoto that he probably doesn't deserve. No matter what camp of angry fanboys you might roll with, it's hard not to recognize Miyamoto's staggering list of contributions and achievements throughout his career; while his invisible historical hand might not be visible in every game, you can be damn sure that it's in a great many of them.

Still, isn't it a bit early to be honoring Miyamoto's career as a lifetime of achievement? The man's only 55, and absolutely batsh*t insane -- if gardening can inspire him to create a series of games, it's hard to imagine something as simple as age slowing him down.

You just know when Shiggy kicks is they're going to keep his brain in a jar and hook it up to a development system.

CrackHippo: right on. he totally desserves it.

He has already produced more than most developers will do in their entire life.

He totally deserves it, he's super talented, but I mean, he's basically the Michael Jackson of the video game world.

Ok, so maybe he's not a kid toucher, but he definitely creeps me out sometimes.

Lets actually see the Shiggaman come out from his magical adventures in his Forest of Incoherent Franchise Storylines"

I hate how all of the "adult" games Nintendo will pump out are games that can be set anywhere and anytime, and the only storylines can't be to violent or anything.

im tired of "cute" Mario. Link I can deal with...there might be a deep, unrevealed storyline, but who knows...

I had something very similar to that happen to me once.
"Super Mario Bros. on the Playstation."
"Sorry, Mario is only on Nintendo"
"No it ain't, my son played it at his friends."
"How old is your son?"
"7"
"Is it possible he was mistaken?"
"No, he knows all about these game thingies."
"Well, he was wrong this time, Mario's never been on the Playstation." Sadly, that was not the end of the conversation. There's no reasoning with some people.

What's wrong with variety? So you've got some games that are violent and have coherent storylines and then you have games that are more akin to Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland. Spice is the variety of life my friend.

Well, some (many) years ago i watched a couple trying to buy a playstation so they didn't have to buy a computer because it was much cheaper just to buy a ps1 and put the Office2000 cd.

Coup of gaming would be for Miyamoto to go cross platform. But I think he's old school japanese style loyalist. He's the greatest single developer in history, imho. It will be a sad day when he leaves us to play Mario in the sky.

No...but if a group of people think he deserves it now, nothing should hold them back from awarding it to him now. That just truly shows his genius.

You rank Animal Crossing higher than Super Smash Brothers? Granted Super Smash Brothers didn't introduce any new characters but...
