Shhhh! New Xbox 360 drive is sleeping photo

Apparently, Microsoft has already begun shipping the newly configured Xbox 360s for retail with a quieter DVD drive, called the "BenQ VAD6038 drive." And allegedly, this new drive means that 360 owners now don't have to hear an airplane take off each time they start up a game of Gears of War or whatever else it is people play on their 360. From Xbox-Scene:

GaryOPA mailed in to let us know Microsoft has finally started using the new BenQ VAD6038 drive for the Xmas'06 production run (MFR date November 06 and up) to replace the Toshiba-Samsung and Hitachi-LG drives Microsoft dropped. Of course they didn't change all production lines to this new drive at the same time ... but starting November 2006 (Xbox360 MFR date) it's possible you'll get this new drive.
According to XBOXIZGOOD, who already got an Xbox360 with this new drive, the BenQ VAD6038 runs super-quiet compared to the TS and HLG drives and even loads stuff a bit faster and smoother.

The new drive is based on Philips design (remember the Philips VAD6037 drive was already found before in some Xbox360 dev kits (no AES key), never in retail 360s though).

Can any of you say that you have a quiet Xbox 360 or are these guys full of it?

November 2006 MFR date huh? Naturally, mine's October 2006.

Mine is loud when it's loading, but once I'm playing it's barely noticeable, so who cares.

When are the going to shrink the dies so they can run the fans less?

I have a Nyko intercooler in mine because I suspect that sooner or later it's going to die of natural causes (as evidenced by their mysterious 1 year extension of warranties) so I probably won't be able to hear the difference. Mine sounds like a Boeing

I counseled my old girlfriend's dad on an XBox 360 purchase back in December. He must have gotten one of the old ones, 'cause it sounded like a turboprop engine.

How long 'til we see the Zephyr, though?

Björk eff tee double-you. Oh so quiet indeed.

I have a pre-launch unit that runs like a dream. I must be one of the lucky ones.

I have an intercooler too. Mine sounds more like leaf blower. A leaf blower strapped to the back of a Boeing.

I don't really notice the sound of it to be honest. Mine is from the launch and it runs fine when I have my sound system.

Did anyone see if you could get the new BenQ drive and flash the drive rom to upgrade the older units?

MS did good to get rid of one of the main failure points of the 360.

It looks like they may have only doubled the price of the DVD drive too $10 more does wonders.

Hopefully this is super quiet!

Sometimes I'll notice it and it'll drive me nuts and other times I won't.

No matter what just gotta kick up the 7.1 system and all is well!

Anyone who draws serious complaints from the drive better pop a few more Addorall. It's a computer. Whose computer isn't much different when it's running a memory intensive program, save that you don't have a quiet fan or something of the such? I think the sound of the game should properly drown it out. Wasted money invested into this complaint, I think.

My only complaint with the 360 hardware (aside from the launch units being janky) is that the damn thing is so loud.

Hmm.. I bought mine at the end of November and if mines the quiet version, I don't want to hear the louder one. If this is the case I most likely bought a system from the old stock. Oh well, the 360 still rocks.

My Xbox 360 DVD drive sometimes sounds ridiculous, like a turbine engine starting up. Other times it's not so bad.

I heard the zypher. well actually I should say I didn't hear the zypher because its so damn quiet.
runs cooler too, so I'm assuming thats why they turned the fans way down. power brick probably wont overheat as often due to both the processor taking less power and the fans taking less power.
