While it's always been assumed that Microsoft would one day be unable to resist the opportunity to stick its big unwanted nose in portable gaming, the Xbox platform holder has often shied away from talking about such possibilities. Until now, that is. Shane Kim has been chatting about the potential of portable Xbox gaming, calling it a matter of "when" and not "if."
"For us, it’s a matter of focusing on 'when,' because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like … Project Natal," the corporate VP tells Kikizo. "So we’ve chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we’re building a service in Live that … will extend to other platforms. No question about it ..."
Whether this means Xbox Live will integrate with an existing system, or a brand new portable Xbox will appear, we don't know. Kim views Xbox Live as a "connective tissue" that can run through many different conduits, so it's possible we could see the service go anywhere. As for the idea of a portable Xbox -- would you like some Halo on the move?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Pretty sure that's a sea urchin.
I wanna say its balut gone wrong, but it totally doesn't really look like an egg...
Its just too late.
All effort should be pushed into a leaner silent 360 with a 1TB drive for HD media. MKV playback would be nice too. THOSE GODDAMN FANS AAAAAAGHHHHHH
Psp did it wrong, twice. DS is cool, but it's missing something.
2 joy sticks for FPS. Is it really that hard to figure out? Top that off with online gaming and sweet line up of games, and you've got yourself a winner.
Or something similar.
MS has enough cash that they can fuck around with all the optional devices in the world and still come out with a bit of $$ stuck to 'em.
Microsoft in the hand held arena? Why the fuck not. There's a distinct lack of software worth talking about on portables for the foreseeable future. Only things that seem remotely worth paying attention to on my horizon are MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, Metal Gear:Peacewalker and maybe Dissidia on PSP, Scriblenauts and Zelda: Spirit Tracks on DS. Microsoft's entry could force the other two to get serious again and bring some solid titles to market in it's own right.
If it has Gamerscore =P
Not sure what that has to do with a handheld Xbox, though. Either symbolizing that Jim thinks it'll be awesome the way that uni is awesome, or that it'd never sell in Japan, because its culture is so different from North America that they eat sea urchin gonads over there.
Honestly, I would've expected more people to recognize it. Should be a bigger proportion of Japanophiles here than the Internet on average.
Well played, I was going to say something similar but didn't want to be shellfish
I just don't seem them jumping in until the next generation of handhelds rolls around is all.
My DS doesn't get any use anymore because the games have become predicatble/stale/rehashes.
My PSP, well lets just say it suffers the same disease as the PS3(no games, no good games).
Now I've always been a fan of how streamlined XBox Live is(kinda like how Steam is becoming) and if they've implemented into their Zune, and then into a handheld, it has the potential to push the "Live" brand as the true be-all-end-all platform.
Or it could fail miserably. But I don't doubt it would sell like hotcakes if you put a Halo or two on it, though.
Big N: Kid/flash/2D games.
Bid S: Lower-res PS2/PS3 ports.
Big M: Portable Shooters? I'd hit it. (I do love me some shooters..well, except for Gaylo)
That would be both awesome and avoid the pain of getting developers to make games that don't suck on the handheld.
:O!
@protomark I plan to get a pandora whenever the do open sales past the pre order, but they are taking forever
