Shakespeare MMO cancelled; do literary games have any hope? photo

An MMO set in the world of William Shakespeare may sound like hell to you, but for bookworm-turned-nerds such as myself, it sounded like a completely fascinating concept. Unfortunately, Arden: The World of William Shakespeare has been officially abandoned by its creator, Edward Castronova, who has released it to the public as is. Edward says "he was taking on too much by attempting to combine education and research. He believes that his experience should serve as a warning for other academics."

It seems that Castronova was shooting for the stars with the ambitious project, thinking of it as World of Warcraft for the literary. I believe this may have been part of the mistake -- while Castronova had $250,00 to create the title from a MacArthur grant, it isn't quite the same realm as the $75 million that went into WoW. An indie project should be treated as such. You can't get much more indie than an MMO set in the 1600s.

I'd like to hear your voices on this one: Do games like this ever have a chance? Castronova himself cited one of the biggest failures of the game was its "lack of fun."  BioShock was considered an "intelligent" exercise in gaming and met with resounding approval, but the shooter formula paired with the setting and underlying concepts seemed have the magic to make it work. What makes it happen for gamers on this situation?

Can literature have a place in the gaming world, or is it simply a poor pairing, better left to educational PC games that no one buys?

I remember I was going to blog this a while back. I mean there are many forms of media, entertainment, etc. that can be turned into games but a Shakespeare game. What the hell?

Not a chance unfortunately. I hear people complain thats there is too much dialogue in a Bioware RPG, so I don't think many will be too keen on a "educational" MMO. I would have given it a shot though.

I'm all for education, but putting it in a competitive setting with lots of people and you're gonna get d-e-s-t-r-o-y-e-d by the brain powers of Mensa members. That's not fun to me, even if a challenge is always a good thing.

Also, being called a noob for using the wrong gear is one thing; being called a noob for your own brain's shortcomings is a totally different story. A not fun story.

I can't see a Shakespeare MMO but I can envision an awesome single player game like Kingdom Hearts but with Shakespeare's plays instead of Disney Worlds.

Does URU count? I mean, the game is all puzzles and reading.

Well honestly whoever thought up the idea for a shakespear MMO should be castrated, then beaten, then drawn and quartered, I can see possibly a single player game where somewhere along the way traveling through the plots of stories can be worked in, much like the way they did it in Kingdom Hearts in terms of how it was implemented, theres a few scenes in Macbeth for instance that I can easily see in a videogame, Hack and slash gorefest in the beginning, stealth mission as you go to kill duncan, the final battle to kill macbeth, ect.

Its possible to have a good game if they tie it in correctly so that its not lame but so that it kinda fits a fantasy overall plot or something...

Theres possibilities but it would need a lot of talented people and a really big budget.

I think Bioshock proved that this kind of game can be succesful and realy fun, the trick I would be finding the right combination that works within a video game.
I just can't see a Shakespeare game working as an MMO. It makes no sense. As a single player game I could see it though, he should have done that instead.

I don't really feel for MMOs, but this sounds like an interesting idea. I'm always looking for games to take me to a new location. That's one of the reasons why I'm enjoying Assassin's Creed (if only it had more game in the game -- yes, I wrote that right. More game in the game.).

As an English major and English nerd who had never even HEARD of this game prior to it being cancelled I am very sad.

To quote Slim Pickens in 'Blazing Saddles': I am depressed

Doesn't sound like it would work very well. Maybe with more modern learning.

A Shakespeare MMO sounds like a horrible idea in the first place.

I read the website and it actually sounds pretty cool. Richard III is one of my favourite plays, so I would sign up, as long as the MMO allowed the player to act in the ruthless, nephew killing, widow seducing appropriately evil manner.
It sounds like it would either be totally hot or totally not.

No. No game with the Bard, or Francis Drake, or Queen Elizabeth, can ever share the same world as (ick) Tabula Rasa.

Maybe in a smaller setting. Think indie cinema.
