Shadowrun forums closing, other Shadowrun 'products' likely photo

Former Shadowrun Community Manager Kimona has announced that the official Shadowrun forums will be shutting down within the next two weeks. With the game's developer FASA having closed its doors, there simply weren't enough people on payroll to monitor the forums.

"We'll eventually close down www.shadowrun.com," Kimona adds, "and transition it to the folks working on the next generation of Shadowrun products."

Whether or not those products will be videogames remains to be seen, but it's unlikely we'll see Shadowrun home appliances or microwave dinners. For those still looking to discuss Shadowrun, Kimona suggests the forums on Xbox.com. We suggest moving on to another game.

The next generation better be actual 3rd-person RPG action games rather than more FPS games with classes and content based on the actual RPG.

Oh, forgot. Words of wisdom for future developers of Shadow run: Take one from the books of all the various Warhammer (40k and Fantasy) developers out there and stick to the core content as close as possible.

Does anyone still even play this game?

I played this game for the first time last night. It's actually pretty damn fun. I'd love to see a new Shadowrun RPG though, the SNES and Genesis games were great!

This is probably my favorite "I would have played it if it was free" game of 2007

It's a good thing it's closing down. What a terrible interpretation of a great rpg. I am hopeful about the"transition it to the folks working on the next generation of Shadowrun products." quote; hopefully a uniquely deep and satisfying cyberpunk sci fi epic mmo?

Maybe if they'd actually had an offline game to go with the online component people would've gone with it.

But then again, this is all I ever saw Robert Summa playing when I had him on my friends list on my 360, so that might be saying something there...

I will defend this game to death. It's actually really good, it's just a victim of a few REALLY bad decisions (Over-pricing, No stat tracking, No customization of character). Granted, it strays from the source material a lot but in the end it made it a better game.

I do want to see a new Shadowrun RPG though that sticks more to the source. Didn't some guy involved with the original franchise just buy the license to do that?

Shadowrun RPG please please please. This one might have been a good FPS, but this wasn't Shadowrun.

HSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Be weary dvddesign when you speak that name women weep, babies scream, flowers wilt and die and I cringe.

Shadowrun was pretty good for a few days, in fact I'd say I really liked it. But after a while it just got really dull and a began to hate it. I wonder how many active members there were on the forums.

I don't know much about the original RPG but the Snes game was awesome and as long as the next game (if there is one) keeps that cool cyberpunk/voodoo feel to it it will rock.

I think a lot of people just went "meh" at another online shooter. I know I did, even though it looked decent.

Shadowrun's biggest gimmick was "NOW YOU CAN PLAY WITH PC AND XBOX 360 USERS TOGETHER!" Which lead to nothing less then fail.

Like most games without game breaking bugs, it was fun at first, but turned into average once you saw all the shinies of it. It would have been much better with a solo campaign and some form of character advancement/customization in the solo campaign.

@Rosseh: If it didn't have the cyberpunk/magic feel, it wouldn't be Shadowrun. The RPG is not very widely used, but it is a very popular game system.

I just didn't like how the game was geared for the 360 right out of the box. I mean, 4 spells/enhancement slots? Im sorry if 360 gamers would have a tough time fiddling through all the button combinations but us PC gamers paid full price for this game so we should have had the ability to set all sorts of macros for the spells.

And the whole needs windows vista in order to play thing was pretty gay.

and I think a lot of other people said, I don't have time to learn complicated controls on a sub par ONLINE ONLY game, that even if I do get half way down, there's the shitty lag to consider, where some magic shooting Elf is going to execute me through a wall with a flaming ninja spell before I even know what happened, not wonder how many people are floating around the servers and not over playing gears? You know I think I'll just rent the new stuntman game instead to give myself more satisfying frustration.

/or maybe not but that's how I felt :)

@Biltor

I think the biggest gimmick of the game was the powers, which IMO set it apart from every other online MP FPS. Cross-platform play was over emphasized since most people didn't really care but it was still nice to have.

I played this game for a few weeks with some good friends on XBOX Live (obviously, I know.) and it was a pretty fun time. Now not being an RPG hurt it, being ONLINE ONLY hurt it, but man some of the tech and magic abilities made this a very unique FPS. Nothing is more fun that being near death from a serious gun battle and dropping through the floor or jumping through a wall to save your ass. Or running off the top of a building and activating your glider to soar across a large gap and drop some fool with a katana. Some of the ideas here were real sweet, but I would have liked to see them used in a more large scale environment. Like a really fleshed out online FPS RPG with larger teams and more terrain.

I'm hoping they don't shut down the game, just on principle. If I'm paying for Live, these games should be staying up.

Let's not forget that us PC gamers not only had to deal with controls and skills limited by the 360 version, they also dumbed down the mouse aiming.

I'm all for playing with console gamers... but how about giving them aiming help while letting my skill actually mean something.

had this game been priced 40$ from the start and NOT called Shadowrun, all you trash talkers would have tossed this games salad nightly

Smith&Tinkers (owned by Jordan Weisman) has the rights for MechWarrior/Battletech, ShadowRun, Crimson Skies, along with the rest of previously owned FASA intellectual properties and is backed by a whole new team. Mr. Weisman is a smart man. He basically flopped the more important licenses to companies he founded or had close ties with (Crimson Skies went with FASA and he purchased the property back from M$) and sold them back to his newly created development studio. To put it bluntly, Mr. Weisman put it up M$'s butt and made them enjoy it.

Shadowrun was great--it reminded me why game companies get shut down so frequently.

Playing it made me believe that the folks who designed it sat down and said:

"Alright, let's make a game that's too complex for most gamers, but far too shallow and random for hardcore gamers, and then we can all collect unemployment!"

Way to go champs. I hear the local Fuddruckers is hiring.
