Shadowrun: Changing FPSs one elf at a time photo

This week, Destructoid had a chance to sit down with the guys from Microsoft and FASA studios to get a good look at Shadowrun -- their upcoming team based combat game for the Xbox 360. Always ready to enjoy some fragging, we spent a couple of hours playing and are here to tell you all about it. Those familiar with the Shadowrun franchise might be a little surprised at what they're about to find. First of all, if you harbor fond memories of Shadowrun for the Genesis or SNES, or even the original Shadowrun card game, now would be a good time to put them on hold. Immediately, you'll notice that this isn't the Shadowrun you expected. Instead of making a first person RPG, the folks over at FASA studios have gone a different route with the franchise and created a RPG-style first person shooter.

Understandably, the concept of RPG-based FPSs may seem strange at first, but by basing the game in the world of Shadowrun, the developers now have the ability to introduce new techniques into the FPS genre under the guise of magic. With the addition of magic, you now have the ability to teleport through walls, turn to smoke, bring teammates back to life and more. The developers added these magic abilities to dramatically change the way you would normally play a FPS. Studio manager, Mitch Gitelman, sums it up best:
" ... first person shooters have not really changed since '93, we're changing stuff pretty dramatically ... the lead designer of this game was the lead designer of Halo. Did you like that game? Maybe it's time for you to try the next level ... "

Not only does the player have some new abilities to look forward to, the game itself also provides some nifty features, such as being Microsoft's Live Anywhere launch title. FASA tested the balance between PC and 360 extensively by using Counter-Strike and Halo league players as testers. With their input, the game plays so well over the service that you can't even tell who's on PC or 360. A good sign for the upcoming service.

With all that said, some people may still be turned off be the game's presentation -- trolls and dwarves don't exactly imply fast paced combat. But don't let the Shadowrun name fool you, the action is fast, and if I may say so, furious. Hidden beneath the game's RPG like exterior, is a complex shooter filled with new techniques that kicks some dust off the FPS genre.  Just remember, this isn't an RPG with guns, this is a shooter with elves, angry ones.

My impressions

I would like to preface this by saying two things; I'm not much of a shooter fan, and I only played the game for an hour. Not only that, the version we played was not the final build, kay? Good.

With all that being said, I really didn't get into this game. Even though the graphics were great, the controls were awesome, and the story line was up my alley, I just didn't feel pulled into the game at all. It felt like the story's only purpose was to provide a vehicle for the inclusion of the magic abilities.

Now, the magic abilities were neat, but they didn't do enough to keep me wanting to play. In fact, the option to map your magic and tech effects to any shoulder button hindered my interest more than helped it. Normally I applaud this kind of freedom, but every time I changed an ability, I kept forgetting which button did what, usually to my disadvantage. I think that's the reason the game didn't grow on me.

See, Shadowrun isn't a game you just pick up and play, it's a game that's for the serious shooter fan. There is a lot more innovation here than can be appreciated in the course of an hour. You really have to sit down with it and learn a new style of combat before the game opens up for you.

With more time, I felt that I could have warmed up to what Shadowrun offers. But for now, I'm content to say that it is a well made shooter that will definitely find its own fans.

This sounds a lot like Guild vs Guild battles on GuildWars, from a first person perspective. How much longer do I have to wait for this one?

Wow. I like the direction they're going with this. Can't wait to try that glider/wing thing the elf was wearing.

I'm not a serious shooter fan. I'm not even a fan, so guess this game isn't for me. Anyway are those pictures stretched in height or is that the art style?

Looks promising
btw: "Understandably, the concept of RPG-based FPSs may seem strange at first"
didn't get your point there for a second, because i immediately thought of Shock and Deus Ex. These Titles at least delivered proof that Gameplay-wise(!), it is verypossible to bring RPG-Elements into an FPS and thereby making it a fresh and excellent Single-Player experience.
Anyway, these two titles didn't have any multiplayer mode that really worked well(Despite numerous efforts by fans, trying to get at least a coop-mode mod to work out), which makes this one even more worth keeping a close eye on.

@brandan

I don't know what kind of paid advertisements you read that say things like "I really didn't get into this game". I do think that it was a probably a little more diplomatic than it could have been, but you don't get invited to play games by being a jackass about them...

I love the new style; it looks completely different than what was show (and bashed) at E3. Personally, I've been excited about the concept of the game from the start. It'll be interesting to see how shooter fans take to this kind of depth.

Also, troll cocks.

It kinda reminds me of the way magic works on Oblivion, where your primary weapon is mapped to the right trigger and your hotkeyed magic is mapped to the shoulder buttons. The difference here is your primary weapon is a gun instead of a sword/mace/bow/et cetera.

I do hope it'll be possible to host PC-only and console-only servers in the final version. So that we, PC gamers, could have a chance to play it without the so-called "balancing" we are getting for our beloved Kb/M controls.

Graphics do look much better than earlier screenshots. Still kinda baffled that it's a FPS instead of an all out RPG. No playing a decker for me. :(

Anyone I've spoken with that has played an appreciable amount of time with it has nothing but good things to say about it. The devs who have been playing for three years claim they are still finding new combinations to explore and the game hasn't gotten boring at all for them. A good sign.

Isn't there enough FPS games on 360 already? With Gears and R6: Vegas in hand now and Halo 3 coming soon, no matter how innovative/good/fun/whatever this game is, it's not going to do well. Then the blame will fall on the franchise, "people aren't into the setting" and back it will go into a dusty warehouse with Crimson Skies, Mechwarrior and the Ark of the Covenant.

Like somebody else said, there's a lot of shooters coming up, or already on the system: Gears and Graw and Rainbow, now GRAW 2, Halo 3, UT3, Bioshock, Huxley, Half-Life Orange (which contains something like 3 or 4 shooters itself) and this. That doesn't count "expansion" delivered via Live either. Even though I love shooters, I doubt I'll spend 450$ on this one genre in the same year to buy all these game, even though they all interest me in some way.

There has to be more diversity, that's why I'll probably spend my money on Mass Effet, Blue Dragon and Naruto 360 instead of some of these games and in a way that's a shame.

Check out the gameplay vids at IGN. They show a lot about the 'furious' gameplay. I like it.

Being in the Beta for this game I am not able to tell you guys much. (NDA). But I can tell you that you should NOT write off this game for any premature reason. Try the upcoming demo before you critisize it.
