Shadow Complex dev reveals Unreal Engine 3 iDevice game photo

During Apple's live event today, Epic Games president revealed its first iDevice game, which will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3. It's codenamed "Project Sword," and it's being developed by Chair Entertainment, the folks behind the supremely awesome Xbox Live Arcade title, Shadow Complex.

As the codename suggests, Project Sword is a one-on-one sword fighting game. The game will support multiplayer and Apple's Game Center achievements. It also happens to look absolutely stunning, but why don't you see for yourself? If you've got an iPhone or an iPad, a demo of the Unreal Engine running on iOS 4 on iTunes right freakin' now. It's called "Epic Citadel," but you can find it by searching "Project Sword." Or, you can just get it here; full details on the demo project, which took about eight weeks to develop, can also be found online.

What do you think? Impressed?

It would be cool to play this on an actual gaming device.

You're off the hook Retro because THIS is the biggest waste of a talented developers talents this year.

Agreed with TheDukeofNukem. Maybe it's just me but I'm so over this mobile gaming thing.

"Hey guys, everyone's clamoring for a Shadow Complex sequel, what should we work on?"

"How about a SWORDFIGHTING GAME FOR THE IPHONE"

thats a real conversation that happened.

I love Chair. I'm still dying for a sequel to Advent Rising. I know that's pretty much impossible since Majesco owns the rights to it, but how about a new Shadow Complex? Come on! :)

They made a freaking engine for easier development on the platform and you are all complaining?

Make some DLC for Shadow Complex or a least a sequel, jerks.

Yes, and I agree with complaints, because I would rather them make more games or streamline development on platforms WITH BUTTONS. Project Sword might have piqued my interest, but all touch controls means I tune out, and I know I'm not alone in this. Good for iDevices, but bad for actual game systems, as Chair can do good stuff.

Oh man, what a waste - after the greatness that was 'Shadow Complex' all that talent is being wasted on an iPhone game rather than a full AAA title???

*sheds tear*

Oh how I fucking hated Shadow Complex. Yeah the gameplay was okay, like a second- or third-rate Metroid game. But OMFG!!! The writing was so fucking awful. I almost literally through my controller through the television at one point. Hope these guys get a clue and hire good writers, though considering that they're all morons^Wmormons it's unlikely that they'll do anything that smart.

Shadow Complex was great indeed, but the studio should have the freedom to develop what it wants.

The tech demo was amazing, super fluid. The only handheld i play games on still is my ipod, and it never stops surprising me. Apple should really make a next gen console, Citadel already looked better than many 360 games. It's very impressive tech

FPSes are nothing more than a novelty on the iPhone, you play them once and say "wow cool" and "this is a pain to control" and leave them to get covered in digital dust for games that actually use the touch screen in ways other than translating game controller inputs.

So people are making next gen looking iphone games but they can't make something just as awesome on the Wii? Something aint right here.

@Netnavi

Probably because the iPhone is more powerful than the Wii.

Zing!

(No, I don't really believe that, it was just too easy to pass up.)

@hpv

You are a fucking idiot. Also, I hate you.

It really says something when developers choose to support a PHONE over a next generation mobile gaming device such as the 3DS, PSP2 or anything else for that matter.

*sigh*

Shadow complex is better than most $50-$60 full retail releases since the day it went live. There's tons o money to be made through iphone dev. and most likley not a lot of overhead. So yay to Chair, boo to naysayers. Also, button elitism?

Let's say chair develops this to take advantage of the touchscreen, you know, like the bit where they actually demoed combat (that part where NONE of you actually watched the event) they use swipes and dragging, no buttons required. I've said it before, but the best iOS games take advantage of the hardware instead of trying to kludge in virtual buttons.

Downloaded the demo.

There is so much potential. So much potential! (The lighting, the textures, even the reflections were all spot on)

Also, looks like the first couple of posters cant afford iDevices. Being an avid iPhone gamer (do those even exist yet?) I must say this is fantastic.

The tap to walk/swipe to look in conjunction with virtual sticks is incredible. Better graphics than the Current portables can muster, that's for sure.

wah wah buttons, wah wah real game system, wah wah wah mommy won't buy me that sexy new iPod Touch & I can't afford an iPhone... wah. get a job losers! iPhone gaming isn't the same as psp gaming just like consoles and pcs are different yet both have great games. the only people who knock idevices are people full of iEnvy and no money

Note: The title image for this post is totally under par with what the game actually looks like, Graphics arn't everything of cause, however showcasing what the iPhone & developers can do graphically, this is very much one of those few shock & awe moments in gaming history.

I guess a lot of people either don't own iDevices and think this sucks or own an iDevice and think it's amazing.

I for one own one and I think this is a waste of fucking time. There's some games that work fine on a crappy touchscreen. Honestly though, it's completely impractical. Fingers get in the way. God forbid I have to tap something multiple times because the screen didn't respond.

If people want to buy this shit, that's fine. Buy all the shitty iGames you want, but I honestly think we would be better off having games developed for gaming platforms - since you know, that's what they are for.

@Kintaropc - you're an idiot. There are lots of great iOS games. PvZ is better on the iDevices than the pc (if only it had a zen garden;( ). Go masturbate to a Marcus PSP commercial, bigot.

@lastSKY - I'm really surprised at some of the dynamic lighting effects. I wonder if Epic even attempted to get a psp version of the engine running.

Those screens are just from an iPhone 3GS. Imagine how it would look if it were developed for current systems that are more powerful, like the PSP, Wii and iPhone 4.

Imagine how it would look on a freaking 3DS.

@THE GODDAMN Why do you need to imagine how this would look on 'more powerful current systems'?! It looks AMAZING for what it IS developed for, an APPLE device dip~shit!
