Several hundred Game Crazy stores to close in October photo

Several hundred Hollywood Video stores will be without their retailer mate in the future. According to a breaking Joystiq report, Movie Gallery, Inc. has plans to close around 200 Game Crazy stores in October. As alluded to, this move will not affect the Hollywood Video stores attached to them. This is a Game Crazy-centric thing.

The parent company won’t say “close,” or even address the amount of stores being (not) closed. In the official statement regarding this matter, the parent company said it is “addressing underperforming stores and ensuring there is sufficient [return on investment] associated with each of these stores going forward.” The statement then mentions that the “vast majority” of stores won’t be affected -- which makes sense considering there are 680 Game Crazy locations.

We expect to hear more on this rather soon. In the meanwhile, go buy a game or two from the retailer if you dig what they do, eh?

Totally would, except the one by me closed a few years ago already. That was a sad day, I loved digging through the Dreamcast section.

I just pre-ordered Brütal Legend today from a GC...hope it's still open by the time the game comes out. But have you seen that sweet ass pre-order they got?

Psst, it's "alluded," not "eluded." I'd hate to have to pull a rabid Samit off of you.

I had one, but it closed with Hollywood Video. It was always the poor mans gamestop anyway.

That sucks. GC seems to be the only major used game vendor that competes with Gamestop. Looks like I'll need to sell my soul to the 'stop... or just switch to the internets exclusively.

Well, that sucks. I don't ever want to set foot into another gamestop. I guess I'll be getting my games at target. My girlfriend's discount is better on new games anyway.

I don't know about the store but I read that "seven hundred game crazy stores close" and was shocked and feel sorry for'em.

200 stores getting closed is also a bad thing though.

Well, I have a store in town that stocks all the way back to the Megadrive, with hawt chicks at the counter.
To be honest, I'll be happy with that.

*sigh*

I moved too far away from the Hollywood video, when I left town. I loved that place. You could always find obscure movies there. In the GameCrazy, count on a chubby kid playing Guitar Hero badly, and minors arguing about who was the bigger n00b.

This is such crap. My roomates store is included in this, so that cuts the "underperforming stores" line as bullshit. Her store was consistantly in the top 10 for the company. That Game Crazy was a big part of my life, giving me many new friends and even a roommate, which lead to even more new friends. It was also a huge part of the community, hosting weekly tournaments and events for the local schools.

Ugh this just all makes me sad. What I feel the worst for is my roommate, she's been doing this for years and absolutely loves it and it breaks her heart to have to stop.

I can't believe people are still buying used games from brick and mortar shops. Buying games on Amazon is sooo much cheaper.. because you're not having to pay the middle man. Personally, I can't stand Game Stop or Game Crazy because they over charge for used games.

I would agree but the one annoying thing on Amazon is when you order a game and you end up getting the "greatest Hits" version, the fact that they don't differentiate SKUs for this stops me from buying games from them often.

Please disregard the last line of this Destructoid article. The Movie Gallery is an evil corporation that gives their employees 5 days notice before closing those stores and laying them off. No jury duty compensation. Knowingly ignored state laws. Insisted I use the term "Snack Attack" during every sale.

And yes, Tino. The under performing stores thing is a smokescreen. They just cut stores across the board.

Oh well, Game Crazy sucks :P

They've never had anything I've been looking for. Ever. Even the understocked Gamestop nearby that is used to launder drug money has a better selection.

I buy my games off Steam and very occasionally at Best Buy now, though, so I don't care which game stores are open or closed.

I have a Game Crazy nearby, I haven't been there yet but I was planning on going because the local GameStop manager is a total douche. And he's ALWAYS there. Sad news. =(

Well it looks like that Game Crazy I pre-ordered from IS closing down within 2-4 weeks.

Passed a former Game Crazy I actually liked going to the other day, it's now a pawn shop.

Not depressing at all.

The one closest to me however is a total crap hole and should have closed a long time ago. It's still open, of course.

5 days? The GC and HWV store in Fenton, MO got 3 HOURS notice before it was closed on the Thursday night before ODST came out.

Well, as much as that sucks, there's always Play N' Trade, and the internet. Hell, I don't even know if there is a Game Crazy in Miami. Even so, it always stinks to her news like this. Less competition for GameStop isn't a good thing.

While I feel bad for them, I have this urge to drive by the store every day and wait like a vulture to swoop in on their store closing discounts. Hey, my wife lost her job last month. I'm allowed to bargain hunt with malicious intent.

@MSU For employees? That's what I was talkin about, and legally you need to give weeks. They also paid their employees on some kind of ATM card service that A) Forces you to pay an atm charge, and B) any amount on it below $20 increments you lose after you're laid off.

Even if you meant customers though, it's terrible given the store credit and preorders people hold. That company deserves its misfortune.
