Settlers of Catan finally coming to XBLA in May; soon you too will need sheep photo

For the indie board gamer set, Settlers of Catan is a staple -- the equivalent of Mario to the console gamer. Introduced by German board game wunderkind Klaus Teuber in 1995, the game has gone on to be translated into twenty five languages and won the 1996 Origins award for Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Board Game. The announcement of Catan's adaptation for XBLA caught the attention of many a gamer, but for a while there was no confirmed date on the release of the title.

Per Catanlive, it seems the wait is over come May. Only a few more weeks before you can be pitifully short of sheep! For those of you who have never played, Catan is a strategic trading game where you and your opponents are colonizing the newly discovered island and fighting for power. Unfortunately drowning them is not an option, but you can do your best to screw them by cutting off their supply of goods. The addictiveness of screwing over your opponents never fades away, does it?

I've never played this, but from what Tycho at Penny Arcade says, I feel like I'm obligated to at least try it out.

It's great, Dex. I just bought it as well as the 6 player expansion; doesn't get old.

I prefer it in real life, though. Yelling at people and punching them when they don't give you ore or wheat is a lot of fun. Sheep? Who needs sheep? No one, really.

We've played with each person speaking a different language. It was epic.

Um, this is possibly the best thing to happen to XBL. Ever. There's nothing better than calling your best friend an dickweed for not giving you some fucking sheep.

It also contains the infamous rule: "DO NOT use the red pieces if there is less than four people playing." Now many people have counted, and the red pieces are absolutely no different than any other color.

Yeah Sheir, I think you mentioned something about bringing it up here for the house party that never was. Shame, that would have been a great opportunity to play it, I'm sure.

When I lived in Residence alot guys would play this and they'd have leaderboards. Maybe I'll actually try it out now.

So any info on what expansions it will have? I am assuming up to 6 players but will it have the knights and cities, and seafarers "modifications"? I hope so, as K&C is great. However, anyone can play this online now for free so...

yay. awesome.. i love this game.

My decision to get a 360 had everything to do with this , and very little to do with GOW

Settlers is the Bomb and hugely popular, as 28 pages of Home Photos shows:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/images/game/13?sort=hot&tag=&username=

I really hope that the voice chat is good in game, because when you have 4+ players, the player-to-player trading is a massive part of stratergy.

My tip for D-toiders to be competitive is to rush building development cards, build up a big army of soldiers and be constantly manipulating the robber. A strong hand of 5-10 Dev. cards can easily net you 3-5 Victory Points.

When it comes in the 6 player flavour with larger board size and Cities and Knights expansion pack, it will be a worthwhile purchase. Until then, I seriously suggest buying the boardgame - it's fantastic.

This is great! I've been waiting for a date on this since it was announced. Settlers is such a great game, but you really do need at least 4 players to really enjoy it. I'm really excited that I don't have to try and scrounge up people to play with me anymore!

Settlers is one of those games I always want to play, but my friends are more interested in "going out" and "interacting with human beings in a social environment." Weak. Sauce.

Interesting. They should come out with Monopoly for XBLA. The only problem is that you can't beat people up in a rage of money rape. Plus people will leave in the middle of the game...

Still Monopoly is my favorite board game. I can see it using the live camera and stuff. The admin of the game would be the banker. Whatever, I love Monopoly. Maybe even your winnings can carry over to the next game.

I wish you could gamble your XBL points in Texas Holdem.

If settlers used the chamera, I'd be even more happy.
