There's been bit of confusion going around on the Internet today, following the posting of an Official Xbox Magazine video on YouTube. In the video, a Capcom Director of Marketing Mike Webster very clearly states that a new set of controls will allow you to "move while you're shooting."
To me, this was puzzling -- I finished playing through the first three chapters of the game last week (can't talk about it yet, don't ask), and well... I certainly couldn't do that with any of the control options. Why? Well, it's because you can't. Capcom's Chris Kramer clears things up, using capital letters for emphasis:
"THE NEW CONTROL OPTIONS IN RESIDENT EVIL 5 DO NOT ALLOW YOU TO MOVE AND SHOOT SIMULTANEOUSLY," he shouts on the Capcom blog.
There's a bit more explanation (and more use of capital letters to drive the point home), which you can feel free to read at your own leisure. But the bottom line is this: while there will be multiple control schemes -- four to be exact -- not a single one of them allows you to move and shoot.
To see what your options will be on March 13 when the game ships for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, hit the jump.
[All screens are capped from the Xbox 360 demo of Resident Evil 5, which is available now on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. As far as we know, these options will not change before the game ships to retail. Don't make me get all Chris Kramer on your ass and start using capital letters.]

*ducks*
jk
While I agree with you gamers suck sometimes I tend to think that the controls can seriously impact whether or not the game is fun for the user.
While eating strawberry pie of course.
Joke apart, it's a good thing because it's making it more stressful. This feud looks like this "can't hold flashlight and a gun at the same time" whining from Doom3 players : it feels constraining at first but in the end, it adds to the tense atmosphere and makes it more immersive.
Years later I check out the RE5 demo.
5 minutes in had me thinking, "This sucks. I'm gonna go play Gears."
Sorry Capcom, your shitty controls cost you one sale. It doesn't matter to you because you're massive and RE5 will sell, and I still like DMC. :<
I think its also a case, that the japanese don't study the kinds of western games we make much, to influence their work.
Resident Evil 4 onwards would have no fear whatsoever if you were given perfect controls. Besides it plays better then Alone in the Dark.
Plenty of other good games you can buy instead of RE5.
If you're ever scared during Resident Evil 5, you've got some problems.
I mean, the whole point of being slow and clunky is to artificially cause tension. It's lazy, and with the way the game is now, even its crap controls can't scare me like the PSOne games did.
Maybe next time they'll change the controls up so that they're not hopelessly frustrating and actually make the fucking game itself creep you out. You know, actually evolve the god damn genre like JRPGs have to some extent.
RE4 and 5 are not survival horror but action.
you could NEVER RUN and SHOOT in RE unless it was Code Veronica (which sucked) or any of the horribly done RE arcade games (which were just rail shooters anyway.)
if you have time to bitch about controls, you have time to stfu and find another game that allows you to run and shoot. It's not hard.
The game is already easy enough now. Running AND shooting takes the fear (or whats left) out of what used to be scary from the start. take this away and the game is pointless.
I like being a hybrid or something...cause apparently I can play something like Gears AND RE5 and not have a problem with controls in the end.
Yeah there are crazed foreigners coming at you from all sides and some have bags over their heads with chainsaws.
That = tension regardless of control.
Oh wait.....
So if someone bitches about how they want RE5 to play like Gears, then go play Gears. Its kinda like someone bitching about a Metal Gear Solid and complaining that it has too many cutscenes.
RESIDENT EVIL has a certain play control. RESIDENT EVIL is RESIDENT EVIL. If they don't want you to "run and gun", then you won't be running and gunning. It never would cross my mind in a million years to even complain about it. I'm sick of this community that complains about the game itself, thinking that everything needs to be Gears of War control. Fucking lame. totally fucking lame. You people suck major ass.
That time of the month, eh?
Wow, that's fucking hilarious!
Sorry you don't know how to play games the way they were designed, tard.
After playing the demo for resident evil 5 though I was more frustrated than I had fun. Its a much faster paced game with controls that feel horribly misplaced. I didn't play RE4 so I can't comment on it.
Uh huh. That's why you're making fun of the CAPCOM guy, and that's why the title of the post is "Seriously, there's no run and gun in RE 5......"
and that is why you took the time to show all 4 control schemes and then mention that NOT ONE OF THEM lets you feel like your playing gears of war.
OH NO!
SInce when was RE "run and gun". Perhaps the only game you're good at is Gears or something? Seriously. What is wrong with the gaming culture?
It's this type of snark and complaining that makes me all the happier I don't rely on multiplayer for enjoyment. OMG I'd hate to hear idiots on a headset whining about every little thing in every game. Its so fucking old.
Games should be enjoyed. Gamers adapt TO THE GAME, not the other way around. I guess only those that have been around since the beginning can understand that simple fact.
EGM, Destructoid, 1UP..ect ect, they all have this newbie attitude with newbie complaints about every game. Its fanboyism and its sarcasm rampant in the gaming media. It's disgusting. This post is a perfect example of the juvenile attitude towards a wonderful gaming experience, a work of art and years of talented dedication to a craft.....all so some jack-off can whine that it doesn't have a control scheme that fits with his limited skills at anything outside of Gears of War.
HA. Lame.
Nick wasnt making fun of anyone. They're clearing up the rumor that went around the internets earlier today. Reading everything from above I never got the idea or saw anything of the such. Go back to elementary school and learn reading comprehension.
on an unrelated note, not matter what it's better then mass effect
And less we forget how stupid the ganados are "HOLY SHIT THEY'RE RUNNING AT ME, wait why are they slowing down? Now they're backing off, ok now they're swinging their weapon at me"
Yea, SO GODDAMN SCARY, I'M QUAKING.
And Sheeva is a goddamn retard, if you want me to do co-op, don't hinder with a moronic A.I simply because I want to play by myself.
People will defend it, its just how things are but that doesn't stop the control scheme from being shit, RE4's controls where fine, 4 years ago...
Its evolved since then, the entire demo reeks of laziness honestly, even the ganados move in the exact same way course this is Capcom, they built themselves up by releasing sequels with minimal improvements.
Even with something as simple as killing off your character, Capcom shows behind the times it is.
My comment was totally NOT directed at you. I actually got the article.
RE4 and 5 aren't supposed to be scary. They're not horror anymore, they're going more for gameplay and storyline.
Nick never once said this was a good or bad thing. He was simply reporting on something that has been a hot topic as of late.
Read the article before commenting on it so you don't look like an asshole next time.
You're very worked up, and that's cool. At least you're passionate about this. But you need you relax a bit and read what I wrote, and take it with some context. Like someone else said (THANK YOU!), I'm not "making fun" of Chris Kramer. I know him, and have no reason to be malicious. Unless he challenges me in Street Fighter or something, because then it's on.
Also, I'll just throw out my opinion here -- I have no problems with the RE5 control scheme. RE4 is one of my favorite games of all time, and RE5 -- in so many ways -- is extremely similar to its predecessor. I wouldn't whine if I could strafe and shoot, but if it's the decision Takeuchi-san and and Kawata-san decided to make, so be it. It is what it is, and hopefully it'll be an enjoyable experience from beginning to end. There's no sense in me complaining about what it's not for too long, especially when what it is (at least in terms of its controls) work really well.
Also, cocks.
