Sequel to Portal won't be released this year photo

Speaking with Eurogamer, Doug Lombardi revealed that we won't be getting a sequel to the ultra-popular Portal anytime soon by saying, "you won't see a new Portal at retail this Christmas."

"I think that when you hit something like that, you have two choices: you can quickly replicate it and stick it out there -- do the opportunistic thing and cash in on it; or you can do the crazy thing like we did after Half-Life was so successful and go off and try and say, 'Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary.'"

This news really shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone. Valve's become famous for taking as much time as it needs to make a product that is nothing short of astonishing, even if that usually means gamers are in for a long, long wait.

While I'm sure Portal 2 will be amazing whenever it does come out, the wait is definitely going to be a painful one. What would you guys like to see in the sequel? An overall lengthier experience? More Companion Cube lovin'?

If they could figure out a way to add a co-op mode without breaking the game, that would rule. It'd be a blast trying to solve puzzles with a friend.

I want to see some lite role playing elements as well as a witty sidekick for both the main character and Glados.

I'm kidding because Mxyzptlk took my only good idea.

I want more jokes so that way people can recite them and make them even less funny than Portal, Austin Powers, and Borat combined.

Woops, forgot to mention that I don't hate Portal. It's funny and cute and awesome, but gamers ruined it for me.

I liked Portal. In fact, I loved it. But, Half Life 2 being "revolutionary?" I'm sorry, that game bored me. I loved Half Life 1 and Opposing Force, but HL2 sucked in my opinion.

Where would we be without the advances made in boob-related physics by Team Ninja.

Portal:Again

What with Valve being known for their speedy iterations on videogames, I'm not suprised. Still eagerly anticipating it though, whenever we may see it.

I wouldn't want a rushed version anyway. I'm sure we can all find something else to do in the meantime before portal 2 gets released.

You all really expected a sequel to come out this soon?

I didn't expect the sequel to come out until next year. Hopefully the graphics will look better.

I'd rather they just put all their work into Episode 3 and other stuff than a sequel to Portal. I thought the game was sort of neat, but to be honest I certainly wouldn't pay for it if it wasn't included in the Orange Box.

The game made OB a great deal for 50 bucks on STEAM for the PC.

Still, I would at least know something about episode 3.

But the news is from last week, I know because I bloged about it.

They better make it longer... As good as the first one was, the length still irked me.

It's good that they'll be taking their time.

Maybe they could release DLC for the first Portal in the meantime?

As much as I hate that Valve's games have such long gaps between them, I love them for the fact that they actually give them the time and attention and effort that they deserve. I wish more developers took the time to get things right. We'd have fewer flops.

Portal 2 can be about a 3 hour wait for the companion cube to be tossed in a fiery pit and it'll be hailed as revolutionary, AND all of us will love it.

We're such sheep.

ba-a-a-a-ah...

Portal 2 should feature the Companion Cube as a playable character.
