Sequel to American McGee's Alice coming to PC, consoles in 2009 photo

Unfortunately, we don't have anyone at the DICE summit this year. Something about me blowing our entire 2009 budget on Bob the Builder DVDs, Skittles, and zombie make-up. (Don't ask.)

So it's a good thing MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo is there to hear stuff like this: this afternoon Electronic Art's John Riccitiello mentioned that there will be a new installment to American McGee's Alice series this year. As I was writing this, EA hit our inbox with a press release which clarifies that the title will come to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2009. It's being developed by McGee's Shanghai-based Spicy Horse studio, most recently responsible for the GameTap-episodic-exclusive, Grimm.

Originally released in 2000 for PCs, Alice was a third-person action title that was a twisted take on the Alice in Wonderland story through the eyes of game designer American McGee. Word of the title being spun off into a film (and being ported to the consoles) never quite panned out. Perhaps this sequel will give the series some much-needed new life.

EA AND SPICY HORSE RETURN TO WONDERLAND
American McGee and EA Reunite For the Next Chapter in EA's Classic Alice Franchise

Guildford, UK. – February 19, 2009 – Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Spicy Horse today announced that they have signed a publishing deal for an all-new title based on EA’s 2000 classic, American McGee’s Alice™. The game reunites EA with American McGee, the creative visionary behind the original game. The new title is in development for the PC, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game console.

“This new project is a dream come true for me and the fans who’ve kept the Alice flame alive,” said American McGee, senior creative director at Spicy Horse. “EA gave us creative latitude and support on the original game which resulted in something beautiful and daring. This trip through the looking glass promises to be even more exciting.”

“EA Partners is thrilled to team up with American McGee and Spicy Horse on the next installment of the Alice franchise,” said David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners. “American McGee’s interpretation of Alice was an instant classic, and EA Partners is ready to help him bring his innovative vision for the franchise to even darker, more exciting places.”

Spicy Horse was represented in the deal by CAA and Weissman Wolff.

OH MY GOD!! I loved Alice! This is fantastic news!!

The dark atmosphere of the first one was amazing, I'd recommend it.

That was a pretty good game in it's time. This is most definitely good news.

I love EA for paying for this.

I rather liked some of the visual design of the original game but some of the gameplay itself was rather broken. I too would love if they could keep the gloomy atmosphere intact.

I haven't finished the first Alice yet but I like what I have played so far. Hopefully the next one will be just as good and even creepier.

Wow. This is really exciting. I never played the original, but I've always wanted to. Perhaps they'll release it as a downloadable on the PSN and XBLA in proximity to the new one. Wouldn't that be the bee's knees?

I bought the original game, and installed it on the only comp I had, a laptop. Wouldn't play. But I read every damn document that came with it, and look forward to this game. Such a cool setting.

Mcgee has gone down hill since then. I want to be excited. But I know I'll just be disappointed. Just bring the original to Steam and I'll be happy.

Wow, talk about a rise from the grave. This game was good even though I never finished it. The levels were designed well for the universe it played in. Definitely gave a sense of, "Crap. This is a bad place to be."

@Draconiaviper: I think where you got that avatar from ;)

I've also played the original one, it was on one of those Twilight CD's (was a company that illegally distributed multyple games on one disc, have a bunch here) and I bought the real deal shortly after.
The game gave me a fear of giant mushrooms, in Alice there were these evil giant mushrooms that would suck you in and chew you, gave me the creeps.
I was a cheater back then so I noclipped right past that part xD.

I just wonder what gan... what the story will be, I mean Wonderland and alice did get (mentaly) restored and the game covered both books (in wonderland and through the looking glass).

Alice is a freaking FANTASTIC gaming experience.

That being said, is there really any more we need to say about Alice that wasn't said in 2000? Unfortunately, the original game focuses on both books (Wonderland, and Looking Glass) - which doesn't leave much room for a sequel.

I'd rather he injected some darkness into a different 19th or 18th century fantasy IP. Obviously, the Wizard of Oz comes to mind. (which is only a scant thirty years later) - or hell, I'd *kill* for a darker game about Baron Münchhausen!

Alternatively, a complete remake of the original game could be acceptable.

the first game was incredible. you know, until you beat it and realize there's no fucking ending. seriously what the fuck? boss fight, second boss fight, roll credits
jesus

otherwise amazing game... sequel or remake would be awesome.. maybe a little of both? (like riddick)

This is amazing news! Completely loved the first one, the story and characters were so well done. One of my most memorable experiences with PC gaming. Hopefully American McGee will be able to reinvigorate himself with this.

I have to agree with everyone's comments so far but I especially concur with Astronautbread's assessment. The game was a marvelously-dark take on the Alice universe but the ending had to be the most crushing part of the whole experience. Such an imaginative game ending with a low-budget, tacked-on FMV was a gigantic disappointment to me but I welcome a second coming of this highly-original game (series?).

I'll admit that the ending could've been better, but it got the job done. Considering how awesome the intro was, though, yeah...it was a bit disappointing.

Alice was pretty damn good with a great atmosphere, but it was a hard game to beat. Never thought i'd hear of a sequel, can't wait to see what they come up with!

I'm hoping for more of a re-imagining rather than a sequel, for the story's sake.

AMG:Alice was a great game and i agree with previous comments on the game's ending. It seemed the game was rushed to release, there were a few levels (i remember some suspended castle with organic stuff growing out of it) & cinematics that felt unfinished.

Also the weapons and enemies were awesome. Remember the knife, dices, cold "gun"? Rember the mask-spiders? The Mad Hatter? These creapy kids in the asylum? The chess level? The tortured mouse? The flesh columns near the end?

Also, and though it did feel abrupt, i really liked the final boss fights. I just kept falling and falling during the second one..

Alice was the game I drooled over ever time I walked into Costco as a kid. It was pretty much the sole PC game that made me want to PC game.

Everything about it I loved. The style, the atmosphere, the tone, it was an experience. To say I'm excited about this would be an understatement.
