I don't know what it was. Was it the price drop? Was it that people are just tired of the Wii now? Hell freezing? Something!
Hardware: The NPD Group has just released their data, and that data says that the PS3 outsold...well, everything except the DS. Nothing outsells the DS About a half a million PS3 units were sold after its price drop and slim-izing. That's double last year's numbers.
Software: Halo 3: ODST was the game of the month, selling over 1.5 million copies in September. Really, nothing else could compare. The next best selling piece of software was Wii Sports Resort, and it sold less than a third of what ODST did. The guitar games The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 didn't make as big of a mark as they had hoped. Overall good news, though: software sales are up 5 percent from last year.
Prediction: I'm no analyst, but I think software will continue to rise a bit throughout the year, while hardware kind of hangs back. In this money-tight year, I think holiday shoppers would rather buy a game than a system.
Hit the jump for the sales charts for both hardware and software.

Also, as cool as that is, I get the feeling that Tretton will say something retarded and make me want to punch him again.
I'm so happy for the PS3! :D
I still say you're better off hunting down a used first gen so you can continue to play PS2 games. But a lot of people don't care about that. If that's not an issue, I think $299 is the point where people will start to buy. Better than $599, anyways.
Out of the people I know in real life (who aren't gaming journalists) that bought a Slim, all four of them already had a PS3, and just wanted a Slim because it was "sexier".
I don't want that to skew my perception though, so why don't you tell me Dtoid, who really bought the PS3 Slim?
It reminds me of when the PS2 suddenly did a hat trick and consumed the planet.
That's my plan. Where did you find your b/c PS3?
I got mine on eBay. Be careful, though. I made sure I was going through a seller with tons of feedback. It was actually huge game store in... Denver or somewhere that had an eBay store front. The first one arrived dead. They were good enough to pay for the return shipping and sent me a new one. It's been about six months now and this one hasn't given me a lick of trouble. Knock on wood.
"I sold my Wii awhile back and bought a used PS2-compatible PS3 for $299."
Yeah, sold mine a while back to pay for all the 360 and PS3 games I want this year. I never use my backward compatibility in my PS3. Still have my PS2 slim. I do plan on getting a PS3 slim soon. My PS3 has to die sometime, and I've been beating it to death as of late. On my 4th XBOX 360, but my PS3 is a 60 gig launch one, so one would think it's time is near. Sony makes a great console, I don't know about the PSP GO though, LOL.
Technically I'm holdin out for Christmas, but I'm getting the Slim over the regular.
@DDRobin
This.
BUCKLEY!!
As for Dead Space Extraction, it tanked because I told people to Rent It!
I am all powerful.
Seems they're waiting for xmas to decide, so I'm sure there will be a big wave soon.
Still, I'm wondering what MS is brewing up to stay competitive and try to dominate the market. I think they just need new IP's which are almost always inspired and not forced, so we'll see.
I'm actually surprised the DS is still on top. Not that I really give a crap about console sales, but here I am typing...
New IPs from Microsoft would certainly be great. Though, they're doing pretty well with Halo at the moment. September numbers for ODST sales are ridonkulous. Even though a lot of ODST is just previously-released DLC, they still got #1 sales for the month and over 1.5 million purchases. September was a quiet release month this year, but that's still crazy.
@Electrium
You're logic makes it impossible to persuade you anyways since you're already made up your mind. I do think that you're allowing yourself to not see the great experience exclusives on ps3, which is loss for you, but ce la vi.
@xaliqen
Yea that's completely true, but I was more referring to future events.
In all honesty, Nintendo needs new IP badly too, and ones that aren't for kids nor retardedly aimed at hardcore gamers. This might belong in the DSE thread, but until Nintendo releases their own line of mature games that don't suck, I don't think the platform will be considered serious mature rated system with all their Disney-looking designs.
Ok, thanks for the info!
Thanks for the idea about the older model PS3! I can't believe I hadn't thought of that... I'll definitely try for one of those before I buy new!
Face it people, it's all in the long game.
My personal favourite comment of the day...
"New IPs from Microsoft would certainly be great. Though, they're doing pretty well with Halo at the moment" - priceless.
Start...
Start trying to appeal to more people than those who thought Human traffic was cool in 19-fucking-98.
Chocs - ODST's massive sales figure make that statement kind of not ridiculous, no? Take off the Sony-tinted spectacles for just one second, will ya?
After all these years of ps3 has no games. It's nice to see it turned around so much.
I've not seen the ads over here, don't watch much telly what with all the great ps3 game to play.
Massive sales figures simply show mass appeal, not quality. I'm talking appeal to a more mature audience, not can sell by the millions to mostly american kids.
Something tells me the longest day isn't over between Nintendo and Sony considering the two generations of asswhopping Ninty got from Sony.
Billions lost against billions lost.
For now, at least, I don't hear Kaz Hirai's state-of-denial statements because in reality it's Nintendo bitterly and primarily beating the crap out of Sony.
Its only been 3 years so Nintendo has just started.
@ChaosTeaCup I thing Metal Gear is more of a really big niche title than mass appeal. Uncharted or inFAMOUS would be more mainstream than MGS, even though it's a great series.
Most people playing Halo OverpriceDaddonST are 12-18 Now that doesn't mean that if you are playing that game you are that age, nor does it mean that if you're playing that game that you act like you're that age, nor that i think you're that age. just that most of the people you're playing with are!
Sure some adults will have bought ODST with their hard earned cash, but a healthy chunk of it's sales are going to have been bought by the bank of mum&dad, for the kid that wants to get in on the game that all his school mates are playing.
I think if you own both consoles, that also excludes you from my argument, you're clearly in the "hardcore gamer" category, you're not the Halo and Madden (Fifa here in the UK) semi-casual crowd that has boosted sales such.
Anyways, it not about this. It's about how Sony has sold a fucktonne of PS3's, how you guys have spent years trying to make out like we were stupid for buying expensive PS3's, and how we were the one's who knew how it was going to turn out. We knew Sony would make spending more on a console worthwhile.
Trey bitches, motherfucking Trey.
p.s. Just played the train bit of uncharted 2 - Wow.
I regret buying the Wii for $125.....(if not for my gf, that thing wouldn't even be bought in the first place). The graphics on the Wii is shit (it's 2009, I don't want games look like it's made in 1997, comparative to PS1). Those who says graphics don't matter, game play does, you're kidding yourself. Unless it's Castlevania (I want my SoTN HD update, that game shows its age on a 50" TV). And the Wii control are mind numbingly simple and inaccurate. There's a reason the GOOD fighting games are not on the Wii. Now it's collecting dust unless she comes over. I haven't touched the 360 in MONTHS (since Ninja Gaiden 2). Halo? I'll pass. TF2 & CS & Crysis will more than enough to fill my satisfactions for FPS.
You said that.
Aint no most in that toast, baby.
I ddnt buy a Slim, I bought my PS3 some time last year curiously it was around the same time I stopped playing the Wii...
Ohh that makes sense. I was wondering what was going on, and if there was some sort of deception going around. But cool.
