Sephiroth and Cloud do battle in Dissidia. 'One Winged Angel' plays, I yawn

11:22 AM on 12.01.2008, Jim Sterling 53 comments

     video

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's Cloud, it's Sephiroth and "One Winged Angel" is playing. It's still as effective as it was back in 1997, because Square Enix has totally not exploited the scenario for all it's worth over the years.

Don't take my sarcasm the wrong way -- I am looking forward to getting my hands on Dissidia and am hoping for a good game. However, Sephiroth and "One Winged Angel" is so overdone by now that something like this -- a game where it could have some real impact -- is just boring.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but I can't help but feel that I'd be totally all over this video if Sephiroth hadn't made an awkward six minute appearance in Advent Children, or had yet another "epic" showdown in Crisis Core, or if the music hadn't been done to death for the past decade.

Still, it just makes the characters who have not been over exposed, like Kefka and Kuja, all the more interesting. Sephiroth, however, is dull, and we have eleven years of fanwanking to thank for it.

I've never got all the One winged Angel craze. Sure I kinda hate FF but it's not like it's a special song... But I guess it like Hell March for us CnC fans.

here here Jim. I loved Sephiroth, but fan service ruins everything and i'm getting a little fucking sick of him. As for One-Winged Angel, I like it, but it only makes sense in the context of Sephiroth IN FF7, so it's stupid to play it anywhere else... goddamned fanboys...

One-Winged Angel is a pretty kickass song, but Dancing Mad completely blows it out of the water. Best. Boss Theme. EVAR. :d

"Yeah how dare they finally begin to extend upon a universe rather than leave it at one game now that they have the resources!"

It's not a question of expanding on the universe, it's overexposing one character to the point of it growing stale.

Cherry cheesecake is delicious and amazing, and I would like to eat it more than once in my life rather than just always fondly reflecting on the first time I tried it. But I wouldn't want to eat it every day.

OWA would've been much better served in one of the (lengthy) cutscenes.

*SPOILERS?*

Example: the CG fight between Seph and Angeal/Genesis in CC. I thought it was very well done there.

I'm not against "extending" the universe. But I am against the retconning and raping of a story and world purely for fan service.

I cant believe Jim actually expressed interest in KEFKA. The most stereotypical dull & predictable villain in the entire series, well until Seymour in FFX.

And yes I know Dissidia's characters are all meant to be true to their original source designs, but I cant help but feel that Cloud and Sephiroth should have their Advent Children styles to them... (And Advent OWA > original OWA).

Oh and to all the people who are complaining about how over exposed FF7 is. Contrary to what Jim believes, beyond FF7 and Ehrgeiz... FF7 itself didnt get much exposure until the 10 year anniversary started to roll around. THEN SquareEnix decided to cash in on the franchise. Up until then FF7 was kept alive primarily by fan interest... probably cuz its one of the best entries in the series (For me the holy trinity of FF games are FF7, FF6, and FF4)

The fans demmand it, but this Dissidia forgets a lot of charismatic characters like Auron (replaced for Braska!!!???), and female main characters...

The only game that I'm really waiting from $quare-€nix is Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday, but I don't expect to much from them.

I also wish we as a society would stop making Superman and Batman stories, but that's not going to happen either.

It was cool when it happened; I'd like to move on to different stories, even if they happen in the same universe.

In my opinion. All my favorite FF characters are in 6, except for Steiner and Vivi, who are in 9. And 9 was a throwback to the stylings of the old FF's like 6 and those before, which weren't so fraught with the teen-aged, mopey emo-angst and bad-amine-cliche plots and characters that permeate the franchise since 7.

Seriously, Squeenix is so fucking retarded that it blows my mind. This is the kind of game that should be on the PS3 with online play. It would sell a FUCKTON more than it will on PSP. But I suppose if they did that, then it would take another fucking 10 YEARS or so to do since they like to develop their games so damn slowly.

I agree it would probably be way more awesome on the PS3. However, it looks plenty awesome on the PSP and I will have it, oh yes, I will have it.

The level looked pretty cool, and at some point Cloud became equipped with the Ultima Weapon! I think this is the first time he's ever used it outside of FF7.

now the FF8 final boss theme...IMO that gets me ready for anything.

I'm not even gonna watch that fanservice video. For all i'm concerned, the Fanservice stopped after the Exposure of Kuja....which was VERY early.

Also, thanks for ruining Crisis Core. JEEZ.

FF8 is the worst "main" Final Fantasy I've played. I cannot understand what people see in it. FF7 isn't the best game ever, but at least I can still go back to it. FF9 is the best on the PSX though. It's nice that it doesn't take itself too seriously and has more old style fantasy.

What's so great about FF8? Maybe I missed something but I tried giving it a play through and it didn't interest me at all. Military launches, evil conspiracy blah blah, I put it down after the garden was over run or i escaped from some prison cell, i forget the order. The garden thing was cool in the sense they train these kids to do war. I'm not trying to be sarky, please tell me it's qualities.

you know I just sit back and read articles and sometimes I just read some comments. And I cannot WILL not let this comment:

"I cant believe Jim actually expressed interest in KEFKA. The most stereotypical dull & predictable villain in the entire series, well until Seymour in FFX. "

Go without a thorough argument.

Lets present the facts:

Sephiroth: A clone of a clone of a clone of a clone whos intentions are never really fleshed out. Hes simply some feminine looking dude with a long sword and filled with about as much angst as a Hot Topic on Halloween.

Kefka: A diabolical madman intent on destroying life, becoming the ruler of the world by using and manipulating everyone and their mother.

Sephiroth kills Aeris and hes labeled as the worst bad guy ever. Seriously? he kills a sub par magician bitch and hes the WORST villain?

Kefka not only poisons the water reservoir of a town that wasnt even threatening him, he destroys the entre WORLD. Why? because its fucking hilarious to him.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed FF7, and it was the reason I bought a PS one. But better than Kefka? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Nah son, it jsut doesnt work that way.

Kefka is the Joker of the Final Fantasy series.

While Sephiroth is more of a repetitive androgynous character that shows up in a bunch of anime fans sketch books.

Thats my 2¢

Guess Ill toss my hat in the ring and say that I think FF9 was the biggest pile of crap Ive ever played, and Im a die hard FF fan. Its the only FF game I never finished, I disliked the character designs with a passion, and I hated how they would yank random people from my party only to put them back in later at the same level they left with, horrible game. FF4,6,7,8 were by far my favorite of all time, and as far as Im concerned none of the others come close.

c'mon we have seen almost every character on dissidia fight against their own universe antagonist (terra - kefka, tidus - jecht, etc) so why all the fuss because you see cloud v/s sephiroth... what did you expect? that they dont show one of the fights more anticipated for years (of course before AC, CC, etc)...
i still remember the times i watched the N64 FF VI tech demo over and over again just wanting to get an updated look at my dear party... when they did Advent Children... it was the same for FFVII fans... let them be happy, now they can duke it out advent children style each one controlling a character... guess thats new isnt it? For me, it's FFVI >>> FFVII and Kefka >>> Sephiroth.

Now I like them both and respect the opinions of those that were broken in on the PS1/PC FFVII but number 6 simply kicks more ass and was the last Final Fantasy before we started to see all the soon-to-be FF cliches. I'm not talking about chocobos and guys named Cid, I'm talking about blonde, emotionally-stunted, spikey-haired protagonists, gigantic swords, bait-and-switch antagonists, shallow characterizations, STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE, and a number of other issues that Square has blindly embraced as they milk their cash cow (FFVII) dry.

If FFXIII shows no real improvement and change from the cookie cutter pattern Square has been clinging to for the greater part of the past decade, the Final Fantasy series will essentially be dead to me.

Oh, and to avoid any potential flames, the cliches above weren't necessarily cliches when FFVII came out (well, not FINAL FANTASY cliches, at least...), but Square sure as hell made them cliches in no time flat.
