Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's Cloud, it's Sephiroth and "One Winged Angel" is playing. It's still as effective as it was back in 1997, because Square Enix has totally not exploited the scenario for all it's worth over the years.
Don't take my sarcasm the wrong way -- I am looking forward to getting my hands on Dissidia and am hoping for a good game. However, Sephiroth and "One Winged Angel" is so overdone by now that something like this -- a game where it could have some real impact -- is just boring.
Maybe I'm too cynical, but I can't help but feel that I'd be totally all over this video if Sephiroth hadn't made an awkward six minute appearance in Advent Children, or had yet another "epic" showdown in Crisis Core, or if the music hadn't been done to death for the past decade.
Still, it just makes the characters who have not been over exposed, like Kefka and Kuja, all the more interesting. Sephiroth, however, is dull, and we have eleven years of fanwanking to thank for it.

"Yeah how dare they finally begin to extend upon a universe rather than leave it at one game now that they have the resources!"
It's not a question of expanding on the universe, it's overexposing one character to the point of it growing stale.
Cherry cheesecake is delicious and amazing, and I would like to eat it more than once in my life rather than just always fondly reflecting on the first time I tried it. But I wouldn't want to eat it every day.
yeah, maybe
*SPOILERS?*
Example: the CG fight between Seph and Angeal/Genesis in CC. I thought it was very well done there.
I'm not against "extending" the universe. But I am against the retconning and raping of a story and world purely for fan service.
And yes I know Dissidia's characters are all meant to be true to their original source designs, but I cant help but feel that Cloud and Sephiroth should have their Advent Children styles to them... (And Advent OWA > original OWA).
You know, your name isn't really going to help your credibility. :) You may not be a fanboy, you may be as unbiased as they come, but on this particular subject, that name is really not going to help your case.
I know. It comes with the territory. :)
"I cant believe Jim actually expressed interest in KEFKA. The most stereotypical dull & predictable villain in the entire series, well until Seymour in FFX."
And that's why I love Kefka. Because he is a dastardly motherfucker with an evil laughter.
And he hates hates hates hates hates hates hates hates hates hates hates you wall!
The only game that I'm really waiting from $quare-€nix is Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday, but I don't expect to much from them.
It was cool when it happened; I'd like to move on to different stories, even if they happen in the same universe.
For me, Dissidia's gonna be all about the Onion Knight. Awwwww yeah.
Or so I remember it.
Amen brother. I thought i was the only one who felt that way!
In my opinion. All my favorite FF characters are in 6, except for Steiner and Vivi, who are in 9. And 9 was a throwback to the stylings of the old FF's like 6 and those before, which weren't so fraught with the teen-aged, mopey emo-angst and bad-amine-cliche plots and characters that permeate the franchise since 7.
can't wait to kick sephiroth's and cloud's EMO butts with kefka. =P
Careful, if you let SE know that people like us actually like FF8 more, they'll rape that game as well. Kingdom hearts *shudders*.
The level looked pretty cool, and at some point Cloud became equipped with the Ultima Weapon! I think this is the first time he's ever used it outside of FF7.
now the FF8 final boss theme...IMO that gets me ready for anything.
I'm not even gonna watch that fanservice video. For all i'm concerned, the Fanservice stopped after the Exposure of Kuja....which was VERY early.
Also, thanks for ruining Crisis Core. JEEZ.
To me ff8 could've been on the same level as ff7 if not for the damned stupid draw system
Besides Jim, what other song you expect to have in a fight between them 2? Nirvana?
"I cant believe Jim actually expressed interest in KEFKA. The most stereotypical dull & predictable villain in the entire series, well until Seymour in FFX. "
Go without a thorough argument.
Lets present the facts:
Sephiroth: A clone of a clone of a clone of a clone whos intentions are never really fleshed out. Hes simply some feminine looking dude with a long sword and filled with about as much angst as a Hot Topic on Halloween.
Kefka: A diabolical madman intent on destroying life, becoming the ruler of the world by using and manipulating everyone and their mother.
Sephiroth kills Aeris and hes labeled as the worst bad guy ever. Seriously? he kills a sub par magician bitch and hes the WORST villain?
Kefka not only poisons the water reservoir of a town that wasnt even threatening him, he destroys the entre WORLD. Why? because its fucking hilarious to him.
Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed FF7, and it was the reason I bought a PS one. But better than Kefka? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Nah son, it jsut doesnt work that way.
Kefka is the Joker of the Final Fantasy series.
While Sephiroth is more of a repetitive androgynous character that shows up in a bunch of anime fans sketch books.
Thats my 2¢
Also, I don't see what's so good about One-Winged angel...it doesn't do anything for me.
i still remember the times i watched the N64 FF VI tech demo over and over again just wanting to get an updated look at my dear party... when they did Advent Children... it was the same for FFVII fans... let them be happy, now they can duke it out advent children style each one controlling a character... guess thats new isnt it? (aside from ergheiz)
Im still looking forward to exactly this battle, although not less any of the others.
Now I like them both and respect the opinions of those that were broken in on the PS1/PC FFVII but number 6 simply kicks more ass and was the last Final Fantasy before we started to see all the soon-to-be FF cliches. I'm not talking about chocobos and guys named Cid, I'm talking about blonde, emotionally-stunted, spikey-haired protagonists, gigantic swords, bait-and-switch antagonists, shallow characterizations, STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE, and a number of other issues that Square has blindly embraced as they milk their cash cow (FFVII) dry.
If FFXIII shows no real improvement and change from the cookie cutter pattern Square has been clinging to for the greater part of the past decade, the Final Fantasy series will essentially be dead to me.
Oh, and to avoid any potential flames, the cliches above weren't necessarily cliches when FFVII came out (well, not FINAL FANTASY cliches, at least...), but Square sure as hell made them cliches in no time flat.
