Sell your Wii remote: Smash Bros. Brawl compatible with four control schemes photo

No more fighting, folks. Super Smash Bros. Brawl's designer, Masahiro Sakurai, has revealed on the site's official page that you're going to have choices when it comes to how you play the game. As Sakurai put it, the Wii is versatile, allowing for four different control schemes. He just had "no choice but implement [sic] them all!"

He then goes on to say that he recommends the GameCube controller, effectively confirming the fact that the Nintendo Wii is really, after all, two GameCube's duct taped together. Still, fans of the waggle and poke should fear not -- Wii remote specific actions should be present.

"Hmm? How do you do smashes and dashes with just the Wii Remote?" Sakurai muses. "If I get the chance to tell you, I will."

I'm assuming the game is going to come with an instruction manual, Sakurai-san. Don't put yourself out; just release the game this year.

This is smart..this way when Smash Bros 4 (Massacre? Beat Down? Assault?) comes out with only motion controls you can use this game to warm up on the controls.

Also this won't alienate old users which is a lot were afraid of.

Well they have for characters:

Mario
Link
Pit
Fox
Pikachu
Kirby
Samus Zero Suit
Samus Chozo/Power Suit
Wario
Solid Snake
Meta Knight

That is all that is revealed so far...11 is a decent number so far and they said they didn't want to go clones (ie: Young Link, Captain Falcon/Gannondorf, Luigi/Dr. Mario, etc). Also we can look forward to a Fire Emblem character but which one?

Maybe both but Marth redesigned? I only say Marth since he was considered the best in the game so they might try to "dumb" him down.

I'm most excited to try out the Wii-Remote alone controls. I'm hoping that it's totally streamlined, no motion controls at all.

Just like not every DS game should use touch controls and the micraphone, not every Wii game should use motion controls and the pointer. The controls are their to serve that game, the game is not there to serve the controls.

Considering my three best characters were clones in Melee, I'm really nervous that they are going to leave someone out, or change them. (Falco, Marth, Dr. Mario). Yes, they were clones, but they were different enough from their counterpart to have their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

IMO, they should do what they did with the first game and double the amount of characters, even if they do have to clone. Why? Because you'll only like certain characters, and it's nice to have a large handful to fight from, rather than one or two.

Nintendo, add as many Fire Emblem characters as you want. There's a plethora to choose from. Scratch that, make a SSBB-esque game with ONLY FE characters. (Pretty please?)

said it to tehuberones blog said it here.

As far as I'm concerned the reason MOST EVERY SERIOUS smasher wants to use the gamecube controller is because as is even the classic controller or nunchuck duo does not have a better set up for this game.

smash needs just a few buttons
- joystick for movment
- A button
- B button
- Jump button (A MUST!!!!!)
- quite honestly the smash nub is competitively considered a great thing to use (with the cube version at least) it allows for the use of the fastest smash attacks without charge delay, and allows for up smashes out of dashes without using crouch cancels

no other option will let you adjust your shield size like the cube version. :(

and as far as comfort is concerned you can shove your classic controller up your ARSE. If I wanted to play with "gamecube controller 0.0001" I'd go buy a beta playstation controller OOOOOOOHHHHHOHOHOHOHOHOH LOLOLOlololOLolOolOloLolOLOLOL

So there. for classic gaming the gamecube controller wins hands down

I think we are all in agreement that the classic controller sucks mouse pads. Regardless unless some fluke of the motion control give an edge, the cube controller will remain the competitive choice of pro smashers.

AND NEVER MENTION the up on analogue for jumps. Again, I think all pro smashers are in agreement that if they got rid of the redundant and hindering "feature" we all would be happy.

Super Fire Emblem Bros ftw?

I don'tt hink I hae a problem with no clones...although I did play with Falco (clone of Fox). But Roy was the clone of Marth so if they take the basic characters from the original, then Marth is in.

What is wierd is they said NO clones but they already have 2 Samus'. But I suppose Power/Chozo Suit will be like the sniper like the old smash and the Zero Suit will be more of a ninja fighter HI-YAH!

So even Nintendo acknowledges that the wiimote isn't suitable for games that actually require responsive controls.

The first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem.

Look at this blog cause there is a scan that is TWO pages and there are TWO separate Samus', each with their own name and not directly next to each other.

All signs would point towards two different characters.

Sigh.

This isn't an admission of anything. It's giving players options. And it's nice that you've already decided that the application of motion controls has failed, because the game's not out yet.

They don't have two samuses from what I can tell, it's one samus that can transform to zero suit, much like Zelda and whatever her alter ego was.

The Classic controller is much better for many SNES games, like Super Mario World. Due to the position of the B button relative to X and Y on the GC controller, SMW is unplayable on a GC controller. You can't dash into a full jump without hitting the spin jump and falling to your death.

I said this before, in the other blog, but I think Nintendo has proven unequivocally that they don't really give a shit about "MOST EVERY SERIOUS" gamer. Frankly, I don't either. I used to consider myself a serious gamer, but since apparently serious gamer's can't have fun with the "broken" motion sensing controls, I'm not really a serious gamer. And here I thought all it took was spending 90% of your disposable income and free time on games.

I'm psyched for the sideways Wii-remote control. Leave the Nunchuck out. I don't want it if I don't need it.

Streamlining it is great for casual Smash Bros players like me you just want to pick up and play with out learning too much. And to play drunk. One hand for your Wine Cooler, the other for your Wii-Remote.

Doomtrain- Nintendo never said that every game made for the Wii should take advantage of all of it's features. That would be dumb. Not every 360 or PS3 game uses all of the buttons and joysticks and joypads on those controllers, and likewise, not every Wii game should use all the options it's controllers have either.

On a seperate note, I'm hoping for Rhythm Tengoku characters in this game.

Here's how i see the Wiimote on it's side controls.

D-pad- Move, double tap to dash(you haee to do it with the control stick anyway) I was also thinking to move you would be able to tilt the wiimote for analog precision as you would with a control stick.

B button blocks.

1 and 2 for regular and smash attacks respectively.

A button to taunt.

To jump you can flick the wiimote up and to force yourself down you would flick it downward. Or up and down on the d-pad respectively.

Now is that so hard?

@TheStripe

They actually originally announced that the game will be played only with GameCube/classic controller for old school feel and not to alienate the veterans. It wasn't saying motion controls failed, just not needed for what they were doing. But it is probably save to say that Nintendo convinced them to include some motion controls since it is on the Wii.

And about Samus, did you look at the scan in that blog? Why two characters on a page if they are the same? I mean in Melee and on articles of Melee, they never included Sheik as a playable character. They always just listed Zelda and one of her moves was to switch to Sheik. If they did it like Zelda/Sheik, which move of Samus' are they going to take away? Her Ball bomb cause that is Down + B, her blaster, her missile, or her screw attack? Taking any of those away would lead to a big and bad reaction so I think it is probably save to say that from that scan, there is two Samus...one a shooter, one a fighter.

Yeah. It's a little difficult to jump with the stick, so I usually use the X and Y buttons.

But it seems as though despite Sakurai giving us options( 4 for god's sakes) people are STILL bitching. Noone said you had to use the motions. That's why there's an option(well many options)

And to capitalize on Wii's game's being "poke and stab" moniker, you do realize that the human mind subconsciously thinks you're in the game, so you move along with it. It brings a more interactive experience to games.

Grapefruit Juice, I have not read a comment from you that is insightful or with thought. The link you provided is meaningless and quite frankly, you're just annoying me.

Anyways, I like Nintendo's decision. The only concern I have is using the B button while holding the wiimote sideways. Thinking about it just seems awkward.

I don't mind the clones, either, but I hope that they haven't paired down the total volume of characters too much. Part of this games draw as a fighter, to me anyway, is the huge plethora of characters to be played and unlocked. I'm also quite glad all those options are available; it means I don't have to buy anything else to have 4 player SSBB madness.

Prolly the double tap to dash, unless it's tilting the 'mote in that direction whilst one runs. The Smash is undoubtedly swatting the remote.
