In an astonishingly frank interview, Sega West boss Mike Hayes admitted that his company hasn't been treating its classic IP franchises with enough respect, and has pledged to do better with its future titles. Stating that his company "can't just get away with PR," Hayes says that whatever game comes next, it must hit that 85% rating range.
"It's important that on our old IP that is respected, we need to deliver a good product," admits Hayes. "And in some instances we have done that -- look back at when we re-did Sega Rally. It scored well and was moderately successful commercially. But then with other great franchises like Golden Axe we didn't produce a great game at all.
"Going forward, if we're going to look at any existing IP to bring out the locker, we have to make sure we get the quality to a level we now expect. I'm not saying which IP it would be -- a Streets Of Rage, a Crazy Taxi, whatever. What we have to do now is build something that is 85 per cent plus [rated]. We can't just get away with PR."
That's great to hear. Sega's recent mistreatment of the games that made it a star have been very depressing, to say the least. Also ... did he just hint at a new Streets of Rage? Did he seriously just hint that? Please say that is what he did!

its good to see Hayes realizing his companies faults, lets hope Sega gets its prestige back
ill totally buy another Sega console
Give us a new rebooted Street of Rage, Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi and better yet some more fuckng Jet Set Radio, and you'd be laughing all the way to the bank. Let Platinum Games have a shot at one of these.
On top of that, pitch a Sega vs Capcom game at Capcom.
Get more in touch with your fans, and you'll know what they want.
Please work at SEGA so you can make these things happen.
all those games you mentioned need a reboot, i would love another Shinobi and Jet Set Radio
So yeah more of that please.
Pleeeeeeaaase.
...Or at least we can hope...or beg Sega for...or maybe they're hinting their next game will be Shenmue 3...again we can hope eh?
Alex Kidd in Spastic Land
or Dynamite Dux 2
These games were fucked before you even start work on the new IP.
You cant really go wrong with Streets of Rage - smashing broken bottles into peoples faces then suplexing the motherfuckers. Where do I preorder
Plus the multiplayer practically creates itself.
It would be the single greatest game created this generation.
As for lack of respect for their franchises. Apart from Sonic getting raped annually (anally?) for the money he can generate, Sega doesn't seem to necessarily disrespect their products, rather they seem to release unfinished/unpolished products.
Sonic murdered Alex. Despite Alex Kidd's cameo in Sonic Sega All-Stars racing Alex dies in the beginning of arcade Golden Axe and his tombstone can be seen in Altered Beast. :)
I've always wanted an FPS with vehicles that controlled and handled like a Crazy Taxi. It would be carnage.
I'm sure Sega going back into the hardware race would be cool. Thing is, they can potentially make money just doing games, they just have to know what to create and use for fans, and what to leave alone. Its pretty much been this way since Sammy purchase and merged with them, but they seem to be recovering their senses slowly.
Sega also need to have more games created in conjuntion with other devs. Alpha Protocol is looking awesome, and Colonial Marines should pan out well. AvP is doing okay in sales despite its problems.
Reboots of Cyber Police ESWAT and Burning Rangers, could be cool in the right hands.

if Sega they did come back by some chance it would be awesome
Having Panzer Dragoon Orta on the Xbox was good enough for awhile. No need to pump out another so soon (especially given how poorly it sold). I thought Orta was fantastic.
unless you know...Sega actually puts some damn work into SoR4. Seeing they started then canned the DC sequel.
at least the west knows Sega's fucking up with their classic stuff. Now if we can get them to realize their new and current IPs need that same PR mindset.
How do they qualify a classic IP? I mean, at this point, there's more numbered Yakuza Games than Sonic games, so how about starting there and re-visiting Yakuza 3 with a proper US release with marketing and advertising?
And uncensored content?
Yakuza 3's cuts and Shenmue 3's existence say hello.
Also, last time SEGA tried a new Streets of Rage, it resulted in Fighting Force...
Why are Capcom even making Lost Planet2? I want Metro City Mayor Mike Haggar cracking skulls with a lead pipe in Final Fight 4. Plus the original line up of goons including 'sodom' & those prostitute bitches with chain whips. U get to knife em all up in glorious HD
P.S: if you actually mean this, how about finishing Shenmue, huh SEGA?
Dude, Fighting Force was a Core Eidos IP, not Sega. The two are gulfs apart in quality of games. I'd give Sega a chance on a new HD Street of Rage.
Also, I would kill for a new Jet Set Radio.
