Sega: We must respect our classic IP photo

In an astonishingly frank interview, Sega West boss Mike Hayes admitted that his company hasn't been treating its classic IP franchises with enough respect, and has pledged to do better with its future titles. Stating that his company "can't just get away with PR," Hayes says that whatever game comes next, it must hit that 85% rating range.

"It's important that on our old IP that is respected, we need to deliver a good product," admits Hayes. "And in some instances we have done that -- look back at when we re-did Sega Rally. It scored well and was moderately successful commercially. But then with other great franchises like Golden Axe we didn't produce a great game at all.

"Going forward, if we're going to look at any existing IP to bring out the locker, we have to make sure we get the quality to a level we now expect. I'm not saying which IP it would be -- a Streets Of Rage, a Crazy Taxi, whatever. What we have to do now is build something that is 85 per cent plus [rated]. We can't just get away with PR."

That's great to hear. Sega's recent mistreatment of the games that made it a star have been very depressing, to say the least. Also ... did he just hint at a new Streets of Rage? Did he seriously just hint that? Please say that is what he did!

A good goal to aim for, I'm no fan of awarding bonuses based on metacritic but aiming for a good response is always healthy. Nice to see the company being so open about it's mistake, that's really the first step.

God damn, Sega have finally woken up from their slumber. Glad you realise this at last, and that the answer is not to throw more Sonic at the problem.

Give us a new rebooted Street of Rage, Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi and better yet some more fuckng Jet Set Radio, and you'd be laughing all the way to the bank. Let Platinum Games have a shot at one of these.

On top of that, pitch a Sega vs Capcom game at Capcom.

Get more in touch with your fans, and you'll know what they want.

If SEGA can pick themselves back up and start producing quality products, I hope they try and get back into the system race too. I know I'd be down with a new SEGA system if they can show they've cleaned up their act.

As long as they keep the absurd 80s/90s look of streets of rage, then I'm all for it. A more modern/realistic look for the franchise might kill it for me.

Alex Kidd in Spastic Land

Sega: Seriously. You need to combine Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi. Think about it. You drive a person to the Pizza Shack or whatever, collect their fare then get out of the car and axe kick everyone within a 20 yard radius.

Plus the multiplayer practically creates itself.

It would be the single greatest game created this generation.

I really liked Golden Axe:Beast Rider, though I understand a lot of criticisms it still has become one of my favourite beat-um-ups of all time. The funny thing is I'm pretty sure the initial designs for what it was going to be (garnered from early press blurb and whatnot) were pretty much scraped, or severely cut down for what was finally released. And I wouldn't want it any other way, others would though and have demonstrated this by shunning the game. The real kicker, I couldn't really recommend this, but I adore it.

As for lack of respect for their franchises. Apart from Sonic getting raped annually (anally?) for the money he can generate, Sega doesn't seem to necessarily disrespect their products, rather they seem to release unfinished/unpolished products.

Sonic murdered Alex. Despite Alex Kidd's cameo in Sonic Sega All-Stars racing Alex dies in the beginning of arcade Golden Axe and his tombstone can be seen in Altered Beast. :)

I've always wanted an FPS with vehicles that controlled and handled like a Crazy Taxi. It would be carnage.

@Renegade and Smo5: Thanks, I'll try running to be Sega's Major Nelson. Lol.

I'm sure Sega going back into the hardware race would be cool. Thing is, they can potentially make money just doing games, they just have to know what to create and use for fans, and what to leave alone. Its pretty much been this way since Sammy purchase and merged with them, but they seem to be recovering their senses slowly.

Sega also need to have more games created in conjuntion with other devs. Alpha Protocol is looking awesome, and Colonial Marines should pan out well. AvP is doing okay in sales despite its problems.

Reboots of Cyber Police ESWAT and Burning Rangers, could be cool in the right hands.

recreate skies of arcadia with updated graphics, it doesn't have much voice and its part of its charm and would be perfect for re-release is an epic adventure and it's almost a dead cert for 85% plus. that or bring out the fabled Shenmue III at long frikkin last. and dont pawn me off with yakuza rubbish.

There was a mention question of Sega's return on Gametrailers Path Attack, he reckons its unlikely for them to come back into the console scene he explains why in his opinion but go watch the vid for yourself.

if Sega they did come back by some chance it would be awesome

I don't want another Streets of Rage since it would most likely be a 3rd person beat-em up.

Having Panzer Dragoon Orta on the Xbox was good enough for awhile. No need to pump out another so soon (especially given how poorly it sold). I thought Orta was fantastic.

If Streets of Rage was remade, it needs to be done as a XBLA/PSN download. Or at least i'd want it that way.

unless you know...Sega actually puts some damn work into SoR4. Seeing they started then canned the DC sequel.

at least the west knows Sega's fucking up with their classic stuff. Now if we can get them to realize their new and current IPs need that same PR mindset.

Good to hear this information.

How do they qualify a classic IP? I mean, at this point, there's more numbered Yakuza Games than Sonic games, so how about starting there and re-visiting Yakuza 3 with a proper US release with marketing and advertising?

And uncensored content?

Think of Streets of Rage like Final Fight 4 if Capcom used the SFIV engine. That would be a fucking masterpiece

Why are Capcom even making Lost Planet2? I want Metro City Mayor Mike Haggar cracking skulls with a lead pipe in Final Fight 4. Plus the original line up of goons including 'sodom' & those prostitute bitches with chain whips. U get to knife em all up in glorious HD

Im with EternalPlayer2345, that said and given Sega's track record recently (Yakuza 3 being the most recent offender as RenegadePanda points out) once they actually back their words with feasible proof (I.E. good, unchoped, polished games) i'll believe'em, meanwhile i'll remain a skeptic, i've seen them spinning this story far too many times with Sonic games to be optimistic now.

P.S: if you actually mean this, how about finishing Shenmue, huh SEGA?

Dude, Fighting Force was a Core Eidos IP, not Sega. The two are gulfs apart in quality of games. I'd give Sega a chance on a new HD Street of Rage.
