Sega to publish The Conduit [Updated with confirmation] photo

Sega has been uncharacteristically doing it right lately. Sonic Unleashed looks hot, there are decent DS games on the way and then there are the jizzworthy Platinum Games titles. It looks like the company might have pulled one more canny move to seal the deal, as evidence points to Sega publishing High Voltage's anticipated Wii shooter, The Conduit.

The evidence has been found by IGN, who noticed that Sega has a folder labeled "The Conduit" up on its public FTP site. While not an official confirmation by any means, it is a very strong implication indeed, and would fit in line with Sega's recent MO of acquiring games that don't look like total sh*t.

High Voltage promises an official announcement this week, so stay tuned for the final word.

Update: It's confirmed! Sega sent over a press release which announces their decision to bring The Conduit to the Wii. Hit the jump for more.

SEGA gets zapped by HIGH VOLTAGE

SEGA to Publish Highly Anticipated Wii Title in Spring 2009

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (TBA, 2008) –SEGA® of Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced a worldwide partnership with High Voltage Software to publish and distribute the Wii™ home video game system-exclusive title, The Conduit. The first-person shooter garnered multiple awards at E3 2008, including three awards from IGN: Best Shooting Game (Wii), Best Graphics Technology (Wii) and Best Overall Wii Game. The Conduit is a stunning, futuristic title powered by a new game engine technology that delivers remarkable visuals and effects, as well as a rich interactive experience that is unlike any other title on the Wii.

“Bringing The Conduit into our library is yet another show of SEGA’s belief that the Wii is more than a casual games console,” says Gary Knight, European Marketing Director at SEGA of Europe Ltd.. “As one of the most anticipated Wii games for next year, The Conduit will be the new benchmark for first person shooters.”

“High Voltage Software's partnership with SEGA to publish The Conduit represents an important milestone for this studio,” said Kerry Ganofsky, CEO and founder of High Voltage Software, Inc. “SEGA shares our vision for the title and its tremendous potential, which is why we chose them from a long list of potential partners.  With their support, we are confident that The Conduit will deliver the definitive shooter experience that Wii fans have been waiting for since the system's launch.”

The Conduit takes players into a dark story in Washington D.C. after a vicious alien invasion has rocked the country. An organization called the Trust has sent in Secret Service agent, Mr. Ford, to go up against the insect-like alien race known as “The Drudge.” Armed with an array of futuristic weaponry and an intelligence-gathering device simply called the “All-Seeing Eye,” players follow an intricate maze filled with conspiracy, shady government activity and terrifying aliens.

The Conduit’s detailed control system allows players to customize and configure their controls, including look sensitivity, turning speed, the dead zone and much more. As players delve further into the mystery behind the extraterrestrial invasion, shocking details reveal that the invasion may have been brought on with help from the government itself.

Powered by High Voltage Software’s groundbreaking Quantum 3 engine, The Conduit ensures that players will experience single and multiplayer gameplay with graphical fidelity never seen before on the Wii. The Conduit will also support the recently announced Wii Speak peripheral, allowing online multiplayer gamers the ability to chat as they destroy aliens in each terrifying level. Additionally, the game will take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus for optimal control.

Wow this looks more generic than a Food Club corned beef can... and looks like shit too.

Maybe the Sonic DS will make them look just half bad but they have just been raping their best franchises like Shinobi, Golden Axe, Sonic, Panzer Dragoon, Streets of Rage, Virtual On, Shenmue and many others.

Oh and Jim don't even bother to remotely describe a title hot and then rape it on the reviews. You can just call it "meh" or "average" and we will understand. Remember it's an uphill battle to believe in Sega again so there's no need to deceive readers by calling it hot when it's more than likely it's not.

Generic, yes, but I don't give a shit about original setting or story as long as the gameplay is good. The Wii's been dying for a FPS that utilizes the Wiimote controls properly, and from what I've read about it, The Conduit looks like that FPS.

Very much looking forward to its release.

If Sega makes a comeback, will I finally be accepted by my friends for playing my Saturn all these years?

RISE, GREAT SEGA!

@ SWE3tMadness : True that. The Wii now only needs a good FPS but pretty much a lot of decent third party support. Still the Wii can do way better in the FPS department. Just look at Metroid. The thing is that FPS it's just not the Wii strong point.

Thats why I'm on the Wii60 camp. The 360 for "serious" gaming (just bought Fable 2 and Fallout 3) and the Wii for mindless stupid drunk girlfriend fun.

Nice. Also, you can't forget about Valkyrie Chronicles when talking about good things Sega is doing lately!!

@ CarlCastello

Someone gave you shit for playing the Saturn all these years? I thought that playing Saturn was like some sort of gamer-cred....thing. Or whatever. It's like how people pretend to like the DC now, but apparently didn't give half a squirt of piss about it back when their support would have made a difference.

Which isn't to say that you're playing your Saturn for gamer-cred. No, I'm just surprised that anyone would give you shit for it.

Ugh...most shooters are generic. IE Halo 3, CoD4, Gears 2, Resistance 2, Killzone 2.

People love those games but seem to bag on this one because it's for the Wii.

Even if this is generic, it looks fun enough to be a great hit on the Wii. Plus, I'd rather have a generic but fun shooter than Wii Music. The only thing that looks cool on Wii Music is the drum kit, but f*** that. My Wii is only of use lately to replay Brawl, and finish Mega Man 9. Other than that, its collecting dust. Let's hope The Conduit doesn't suck.

Looks amazing for a Wii FPS. The controls and customizable HUD should be great. The multiplayer looks like it might actually make the Wii a great multiplayer console.

I hope this means Sega will have a chance to borrow that graphic engine.
It couldn't hurt.

Sega has been making some smarter choices lately.
I hope they keep it up.

Though since SEGA has it, that means the booklet will be gray scale. No big deal though. It's not like ubisoft and No More Heroes, cutting parts (and special comics) and the like.
Sega just takes out the color.

I can't wait to get my hands on that game :3

I applaud Sega for picking this up, and HVS has been really proactive in forming a rallying war cry for more 'traditional' content on the Wii beyond minigames and shovelware.

Personally, I am not enamored by the art style, but I am definitely keeping an eye on it. More third parties should start approaching the Wii in a serious manner considering the install base it has ...
