Happy to see titles like MadWorld on the Wii? Sega plans to keep em coming, according to company president Mike Hayes. In a recent interview with Wired magazine, Hayes said that he believes the install base of the Wii is large enough that these types of games are welcomed, even if the sales figures don't break any records. More from that interview:
“What we can say is that we’ll still do mature games for the Wii market because with an install base of some 34 million in Europe and America (maybe half of whom don’t own Xbox 360s and PS3s)…. So even if you took half of those where they’re not into those (core) games, you’ve still got eight million consumers to go for ... So I think the sheer scale of the Wii allows a shooter, or a mature game, to be a niche but a successful niche. And because the development costs can be less on Wii, that means you can sell less to be successful… We can take more risk on the Wii… You’ll see more games in that genre coming from us."
Great news for those of us whose hearts beat faster at the suggestion of more mature titles! Hayes specifically addresses the issue of MadWorld's sales as well:
“… Sega would be extremely arrogant to have a title that didn’t do as well as we thought on a platform and then say, ‘Those kind of games don’t sell on that platform’ … MadWorld sales were very disappointing, but was that to do with the platform? Was it that people didn’t like the art style? Or that people didn’t like the way the game played through? It could be many things, which we’re obviously researching.”
Even if all the other developers in the world give up on the Wii (and we know they won't), perhaps Sega will still give us something to look forward to. Makes you wonder what we might expect from them next.

Madworld was a really awesome game, even if it was short. At $20-30 though, it's totally worth a buy. A shame it didn't sell well.
So yes Colette, MOAR.
Agreed 100%. I'd like to see more mature titles on the Wii provided that by "mature" we mean games with depth and complexity that take more than 3 hours to beat and hold your interest for the duration.
The reason it didn't sell is there was not enough BROWN AND BLOOM.
And the blood splatter was not in glorious-super-important HD either.
But in seriousness, it's good to see Sega trying to do something different with the console and sticking with it.
Unlike No More Heroes 3 that is.
LOL BLOOD AND VILOENCE
LOL BLACK PEOPLE TALK LIKE THIS OH THAT CRAZY PIMP
HAHA PENIS JOKES
Or do they mean real maturity? Because I'd really prefer the latter at this point.
@Pheonix Gamma
So true.
I think SEGA decided to face the problem with maturity and not like a spoiled 8yo and blame it on everything but themselves like other developers, well either that or someone there read one of Kyusuke Nanbu's posts
I think we can all whine about how Mature is all about swearing, sex and violence. But is it really up to Sega, by themselves, to deliver that on the Wii? You would think its enough that they're delivering genres that aren't often seen on the platform...much less the tone of them. I would like to see a real mature game as much as the next guy, but just because something appeals to the 13 year old kid in me doesn't mean I still can't enjoy it.
That, and most of the games they've been putting out on the Wii have been pretty disappointing, and only get attention because we reached a point where a game that isn't made for your mom is a novelty on the Wii.
Seriously, though...
Violence, sexuality, and swearing doesn't necessarily help a game, but it doesn't necessarily hurt it, either. And Sega's mature titles didn't get attention because they are for the Wii, they got attention because they are unique, fun, or are in a genre that everyone seems to love these days.
Or ill go play my 360.
Either way.
And "And because the development costs can be less on Wii, that means you can sell less to be successful" shows you didn't actually read what he said. HD systems are losing some developers money, not the Wii.
