Sega says Sonic RPG will come this year photo

You still give a crap about Sonic? Good for you. You will be happy about this news then: Sega has confirmed that the Sonic RPG announced for the Nintendo DS, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, will be released this year. Sega has been careful to trickle new information very slowly on this one, but that's something for Sonic enthusiasts to look forward to. There are some new screenshots as well, which you can find in the gallery.

I liked Sonic a lot when Sonic the Hedgehog came out, and I actually played several of the entries in the series after that. It was after realizing the that series currently has FIFTY TWO entries (including collections, spin-offs and the handheld titles) that I started to truly resent the Sonic phenomenon. No one character needs that many games about them, no matter how amazing their ring-gathering skills might be. Sorry, Sonic fans. It's just the way I feel.

My love for the DS is unparalled however, so I'm flirting with the idea of checking this out because its on that console and also because it has an RPG theme. I may have to take horse tranquilizers to keep my Sonic rage within, but I'll do my best.

Man...this doesn't look like its going to change any of the annoying Sonic norms and characters but just extend them out inhto a full RPG.

Sorry I have to go vomit.

I think this should have been on a console, and if Silver is in the game then IT MUST BURN!

I don't think that hating Sonic for having too many incarnations is very logical... Hate him for the shittiness of most of those games.

"It was after realizing the that series currently has FIFTY TWO entries (including collections, spin-offs and the handheld titles) that I started to truly resent the Sonic phenomenon. That's a matter of opinion, Spunky. Also, hate is never logical.

This game, like all the other recent Sonic games, will suck.

I honestly want to be proven wrong and eat those words, but I doubt it will happen.

If anyone can make sonic have some semblance of respectability again, its Bioware

This actually looks pretty cool to me. Finally, a game genre where Big the Cat's slowness isn't annoying as fuck. And Sonic Team doesn't have anything to do with this game, which is good. And Bioware is a good developer. So, who knows, maybe it won't suck.

seriously i remember a time when sonic was all about running at high speeds... then we got stuff like racing on riders, riding motorcycles and using guns, playing tennis, running at the speed of a fat plumber... and now what looks to be a turn based RPG that will have little to nothing to do with sonic's speed...

Y'know, i'm fine with them making an RPG, but it should be an RPG in the sense that it has a strong story, NOT in the sense of classic turn based combat; like Bioshock, an RPG for story NOT gameplay... It might be really great if they did a good job with the story

and y'knwo it can be done... i mean sure we got crap like Sonic X, but anyone remember Sonic SatAM from way back in the day, with the freedom fighters and all that? ah ya... now that was a good cartoon show... that really takes me back

I gotta play Devil's Advocate here. Who would have expected a MARIO RPG to be any good? Or any of the other countless Mario games out there?

I'll NOT pirate this if it comes to DS, and see how it is.

@lucashoal

Let's see lucas; joint project between, at the time, easily two of the most respected gaming companies at the time. No, most people thought it would suck.

Face it, you can't compare this to Mario RPG. Mario was and still is synonymous with the phrase "good games" while Sonic is far from it.

Actually, this game has appeared in Nintendo Power already, and from the review/write up there, it doesn't sound too bad. Bioware says that they ARE trying to keep the semblance of speed which is the sonic trademark along with an RPG. I think the interesting part that was talked about is how there will be puzzles where you have to use all of your party characters to do different things to complete them. I'm looking forward to this DS game, personally.

I trust this will be a return to quality for Sonic. As long as Sonic Team doesn't touch it, my faith remains steadfast.

I would personally prefer a 2D Sonic game with RPG elements instead of a full-on RPG. But I don't know, it looks kind of interesting. They just need to figure out how to capture the sense of speed within the RPG framework.

The prospect of a Sonic RPG is enough to tent my trousers. I've talked at length about my never ending faith in Sonic returning to form.

Seriously guys, EVERY recent Sonic game sucking? Its only been 2-3 years since Sonic Rush.

I dunno, Bioware hasn't let me down yet.

Probably the best Sonic titles to come out in recent years were the GBA ones... and that's because they were basically extensions of the original games.

I have a really hard time feeling any sort of excitement for a franchise that has been spewing out crap for so long. But then again, Bioware... I'm so conflicted.

It's like they input "Sonic" into the Generic RPG Titler Machine to pick the name.

Eh, I can't help but think that Sonic doesn't really have the gravitas (Final Fantasy) or the charm (Mario & Luigi) to start in a successful RPG.

I never really liked Sonic and I don't think his story or background is interesting enough to craft an RPG around.

@dryad - Sonic was slightly edging out Mario back in the days of the SNES tho if I believe, for awhile at least if I'm recalling correctly.

But your argument didn't really address my question. Who would have expected Mario RPG to be so awesome then? Square-Enix wasn't as big of a name, they only had at most six Final Fantasy games to their name then. They had a lot of similarities. Mario RPG came out of left field, as it were. And it was the heyday of the Nintendo vs SEGA wars.
