Sega Saturn appears on Gametap photo

Gametap has such a soft spot for the retro gamer. I remember the first time I logged in, I spent the first 20 minutes salivating on my keyboard at the range of classic titles they offered (Infocom has it's own CATEGORY?? ROCK). You never know though -- a subscription service has to remain worthwhile, so part of the key was seeing if what I liked the best about it would continue to evolve.

It seems that they are continuing down the path to my heart with the announcement that Sega Saturn titles are coming, beginning with Bug! as an Easter gift to subscribers. I forgot the game existed until I read this news, and then hours of platforming pleasure came flooding back. If you want to find it, be warned that it is labeled as "Insect?" and is hidden somewhere within the service. Egg hunt, indeed.

Best news of all? We may see the original NiGHTS into Dreams later this year. I have a feeling with the release of the new NiGHTS for Wii, a lot of gamers might be interested in seeing the jester's origins, which would be much better than confusing him with other flights of fancy.

They've actually been hinting at Saturn support for a while now (and have had the licenses in place), but never officially announced anything because they were having trouble getting the emulator working well enough. Good to hear it's finally coming together. Maybe I'll finally get a chance to play Guardian Heroes.

I have a feeling when people get a chance to play the original NiGHTS, many of them will be disappointed. Over the years it's been hyped up to legendary status. It's a fun game, but you can finish it in one sitting. The enjoyment for me came mainly out of playing through the same levels over and over trying to get better grades.

This is gonna be awesome. I have never owned a Sega Saturn.

That is a creepy Peter Pan site. But yes, yay for Saturn. Unfortunately, I don't see myself benefiting, since I tend to prefer owning my games and systems over renting them.

This also unfortunately means that whenever I decide to buy a Saturn and start exploring Saturn games, I am going to lose a lot of money.

This is good news for people that never got to experience the Saturn. Unfortunately, a lot of the great games were Japan only releases, so I doubt we'll be seeing them on Gametap.

@Necros:
If you want some suggestions, I'll gladly help you out.

I remember Bug! And Nights. Sort of. I remember flying around and I thought it was cool. Then I fought some fat bitch boss for several days. Then I quit because it sucked then returned to my SNES. Yes, I had a Sega Saturn. It was $400. It didn't last very long. I wonder why...

Anybody remember the game Bones? That was cool. So was Myth.

Why am I reminiscing about these shitty games?

Gametap is really the shit. the new sam n max is exellent, the dreamcast games are there (not the best, but some) and there are tons of excellent old PC games (like myth 2 and 3 savage, XCOM, Far Cry, Colin Mcrae 2005, Descent Freespace 2, etc etc). definitely worth it.

plus streaming adult swim episodes (sealab and space ghost).

and plenty of myst for people who like being bored
