Sega's ignorance of Toejam & Earl explained photo

Sega has always been ridiculously keen to exploit and whore out every franchise that's ever been popular, cramming them into remakes, re-releases and crossover games at the drop of a hat. However, one game Sega's never tried to resuscitate is Toejam & Earl. I always wondered why Sega won't pay tribute to the game and its classic characters, but it's recently been revealed that it's not a case of paying tribute, but a case of paying cash.

Responding to news that Toejam and Earl won't be appearing in the upcoming Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing, game creator Greg Johnson revealed that it's because he owns the rights to the game, and Sega doesn't want to stump up the green and license the characters out. However, Jones did tease that a brand new game might eventually happen one day.

"I can't promise anything but I'll give it another try and see if I can get the homies at Sega to talk again on the phone," explains Johnson. "No promises, but I'll see what their interest level is. Hopefully they can see what amazing devoted fans TJ&E has. Hurray for the FUNK! Well if I get any news I'll come back and post it here. And I'll keep trying to get some new TJ&E game off the ground. No publisher has agreed to foot the bill yet, but never say never. The funky duo shall yet return."

Would you fancy another Toejam & Earl game? Register your desire here and let Sega know that the series still has its fans. In the meantime, be happy that TJ&E will be coming to XBLA.

Hell yes I would want another Toejam and Earl game. Though it shouldn't be like the Xbox one that came out a few years ago. Just an XBLA sequel or remake

needs to be more like the original 2 if we see another one. I heard how bad the Xbox one was and because of that, I had to pop in the original and laugh at the xbox version.

but hey. we know Sega don't like to make good games for their past popularities. Just call up Sonic. He knows very well first hand.

I think Toejam and earl are pickled to stay in the 90s were they belonged, still that's just me.

Yeah, I played the Xbox one as well. This is one franchise I'd like to see left alone.

A new Toejam & Earl game would be great =D...as long as it's not like the third game.

I was a huge fan of both Megadrive/Genesis releases, mebbe more the second one on account of me being a young nublet and finding the first game difficult.

I would like to buy them from XBLA however I find 800 points a little steep for Genesis ports that I have owned previously. 400ms points each game would be a good price point (for a tight git like me). Maybe I would pay a little more if they added a little polish like the improved graphics filters you see in popular genesis/snes emulators and such.

As for another game, I'm not sure what direction it would go but I could see something working on XBLA quite nicely. Lets hope its not Toejam & Earl tower defence *yawn*.

I'm a huge fan of the original and I never even owned a Genesis. I rented the Genesis constantly to play that game... well that and Sonic 2.

I'd love to see this revisited. It would just add to the growing mountain of hugely popular games from our past that have been resurfacing if done properly.

Maybe this Greg Johnson character needs to stop dangling TJ&E just out of reach of the cash offer. Sega's got some pockets, and it would be a huge hit as a downloadable game.
Greg, if you read this, pull your pants back up and quit being a money grubbing d-bag. Use the phone gift, open a money gift, put on your rocket shoes and win already.

The xbox version of TJ&E sucked pretty bad I guess.... My favorite was always the original, I never could get into the sequel very much. I do love level 0, hanging out with the babes in a hot tub on that desert island is really jammin'!

TJ&E was the 1st thing I bought on Virtual Console. It would be great to do a simple 3D remake with similar gameplay but amped up music & gfx for WiiWare.
