Sega Racing Studio closes its doors photo

It’s always sad to see a developer go. Gamers can forget it sometimes, but ultimately, videogames are a business, just like films and other media. So I’m sad to bring you this news: Sega Racing Studio has officially gone out of business, according to Next Generation. The development house, which was founded in 2005, had only released one game so far: Sega Rally Revo (see screenshot above), which came out in 2007 for the PS3 and 360.

The studio had over 60 employees, and their future is now uncertain — Sega hasn’t made it clear whether they’ll be absorbed into or transferred to other Sega studios, or simply laid off. However, they did explain the reasons behind the closure:

The decision is part of a review of Sega’s Western Development Studios to ensure that each studio is a profitable entity in its own right, and unfortunately the Sega Racing Studio’s 5 year plan would not result in a successful return for the Sega business moving forward. Sega would like to stress that there will be no changes within their other internal development studios.

Sega Rally Revo was a pretty well-reviewed game; Metacritic lists a Metascore of 77 for the Xbox 360 version of the game. However, it apparently didn’t sell particularly well, which is probably another cause for the closure. Here’s hoping the members of the Sega Racing Studio team land on their feet.

What? That was quick. The game didn't seem to cost much to develop, it made some nice sales, and then BAM they are closing down? Seems a little fast =/

Oh wait, 0.*0*6m sales, not 0.6m sales.

Revo failed to attract both the realism racing fan and arcade racing fan.

Did you play the demo? The game was junk.

The Wrath and NyghtcrawleR nailed it: the demo DID suck (d/l, played and deleted in less than 5 min,) and calling Sega a shell of its former self is being nice.

IMO, Nintendo or EA should do a hostile takeover because I'm fucking sick of the shovel-ware they have been releasing for the past decade.

Well, since my last comment may/may not have been posted right... It is my opinion that this is disheartning, but, there is so much competition in the driving genre, anything less than a full driving sim (GT, Forza) or crazy crashes (i.e. burnout) just doesn't sell anymore. I bought Sega Rally 1, and 2 (Championship) back on Sega Saturn, and hoped for maybe a re-release or something cool from them. Oh well.

@CelicaCrazed I'm with you man.. Jet Set Radio FTW. Smilebit, the makers of JSR last I heard was bought/reconsolidated/folded into Sonic Team.. But, I have no clue as to if any of the game designers/directors still work for Sega or not so, don't quote me on that.

I was just thinking yesterday " SEGA can only make racing games..."

And now this?

Most of the people who were in the studio have been snapped up by the other dev studios about the country. I think we might even have one coming here to us! It was a bit of a mad few days for a lot of people.

I enjoyed the demo on the PC and was planning to buy the game when the price came down. The AI was annoying, the graphics were nice and the gameplay would have been fun with a few friends. Ah well, I guess I might as well get it off Goozex/Ebay, since it doesn't matter whether the devs are compensated or not at this point.

Interesting. Having not ever been a big racing game fan other than F-Zero and Mario Kart I have to ask... are racing games popular? I mean, as far as the genre goes? I'm curious as to what genre makes the most per game if we could get the numbers and graph the data. FPS and RPG come first to mind when I think $CASH$ and popularity but then you have to think of how many of each genre come out in a year, A LOT. Does the average racing game make that much money?

@Demtor: The big ones definitely do — games like the ones that Rifter01 mentioned. Gran Turismo is one of the best-selling video game series of all time; Forza and Project Gotham Racing on Xbox 360 are fairly popular; Need For Speed is always a decent seller; and don’t forget the Burnout games, most of which have been top-notch.

Dirt is also a huge seller, along with the frequent iterations of Ridge Racer. Hell, even the NFS series has a big following! *mind boggling noises* Racing games are a huge money spinner if you can get them right.

Bring on a Beetle Adventure Racing sequel!!

(I know this is not Sega related.. but since I was fooled into thinking Rally Revo would bring that kind of fun, it is only right to bring the original ish back)

Here is an interesting list of the top 100 selling games of the last 12 months. It amazes me what sells so much really. Three fourths of the list I consider crap, but thats just my opinion. Really gives me a new perspective on what games make money, cause obviously I have no clue. Their seems to be a lot of racers on the list. Wonder where Sega went wrong in this market.

I liked some of the old Sega racing games. Sega Rally Championship on the Saturn and Dreamcast were pretty damn good games. Sad to see them go.

Maybe the reason why it didn't sell well is because it just looks like another racing game.
