Sega offers up delicious USB Saturn pad for PlaySEGA photo

You may not have heard, but Sega's got this new thing called PlaySEGA, which is a browser-based service that lets you play old Genesis games and such. To both promote and enhance that experience, they're now offering the thoroughly awesome (color choices and dumb logo aside) USB Saturn pad you see above.

You can try the service, free of charge, for up to 10 days. If you decide you like it and want to sign up for a three-month membership, the $14.95 you pay for that will also net you this worthy USB clone of the greatest controller ever. Of course, you could always just sign up, cancel your subscription after three months, and come away with the badass Japanese Saturn controller for only $15.

No word on whether this thing will work with your PS3 or 360, but I'd guess it probably will on PS3, as the DIY USB Saturn pads have been known to function pretty well. Probably not so much on 360, but hey, it works with a PC. And either way, you're only out fifteen bucks and you get to sample three months of great online games in the process. Sounds good to me, how about you?

How many re-releases and places can you play Sega Genesis games at now? I'm surprised you can't play them on toasters yet.

Still, I'm a pretty cheap gamer, but $15 for three months of playing those games and getting that controller sounds like quite the deal these days. Even better if that controller will work with fighting games on the PS3.

I put down my soda so i wouldn't dribble soda on my self.

I wound up drooling on myself instead. I would be embarrassed but everyone at work understands. IT. IS. A. SATURN. PAD.

Okay, I did a little more research into the pad. It does also require $4.95 shipping on top of the 3-month subscription of $14.95. If you choose a 12-month subscription, the pad and shipping are free. Also, they won't be shipped out until mid-november. You can order separate pads for $12.95 each.

OMG that's awesome. The site looks pretty decent. I can currently use my PS3 pad on my PC, but this would be great for fighting games. The PlaySega site looks kinda fun too.

somebody try this and tell me if it works on the 360. I don't really wanna shell out for a Mad Catz controller. Also, I kinda wanna know if its a real Saturn pad all the way through. Anything else would be uncivilized.

also, the avatar creation models look awful. I would have thought somebody at sega could have sketched up some better avatars.

I can guarantee that the thing won't work on 360. No Xbox guide button, no back button, no pass Microsoft's requirement for working on 360. Nothing aside from specific Xbox gear works on the 360.

Will work on the PS3 though.

Hopefully the d-pad doesn't have the strange, rubberized texture my current USB Saturn pad has. It pretty much rapes your thumb after five minutes.

@taiki
well that sucks. totally logical though about the guide button now that I think about it.

still it would be worth it to plug and play on my laptop. that is to say if its a real saturn pad.

Looks cool and I need a good usb controller for my laptop. I don't think they'll ship it to me in Japan though...

Ouch. That's what happens the first time I try to post. Aww.
Sorry about that. Definitely in to that USB controller though.

I already have all these game from their last collection... And the Madcatz Fightpad looks just like a Saturn pad, so... I think I'll pass?

I doubt they'd offer this to anybody outside of the US though...

The FightPad is similar, but all the buttons are the same size.

The FightPad is also 2000x better. Though, granted, it's at least twenty more dollars too.

I don't like the looks of that D-pad, but aside from that it looks pretty sweet!
I'd probably just hit ebay for one of the old stock USB Saturn Pads though.

Whether it works on a console or not is one thing. The button arrangement working like you expect it to is another. For example, will button 'x' on the controller be recognised as 'x" in the game, or would it be y?

You know at first I thought this controller looked a bit shit, but now that I look at it again, it actually looks quite nice. It could do without the PLAY text above SEGA, though. I think I might subscribe and just get it for $15. It is a nice looking pad, and I may be able to remove the PLAY from it.

You know it's funny how there seems to be this ebb and flow in the sea of comments between "OMG SEGA IS AWESOME FOR DOING THIS" and "OMG SEGA IS LAME FOR DOING THIS + SONIC SHOULD DIE". Just sayin'.
