Sega Master System, Game Gear, and Mark III come to the Japanese Virtual Console photo

I have a mint, boxed Sega Master System in storage, and I often think of bringing it out to play. I always end up changing my mind, as digging it out and hooking it up would be quite the hassle. Now, if I were in Japan, I wouldn't have to bother. We've been expecting some console additions to the Japanese Wii Virtual Console for awhile now, and it looks like Sega will fill in those holes.

On top of the addition of Sega's Master System to Wii's Japanese VC, the Sega Mark III and Game Gear will also join in the fun. The release kicks off next month with Fist of the North Star (600 Wii points) and Fantasy Zone (500 Wii points).

While its doubtful that the US will ever see Sega Mark III games on their Virtual Console, IGN does say that we will see the Master System games soon.

Sega, I'm ready for Alex Kidd, Wonderboy, Baku Baku, Phantasy Star and more whenever you're ready.

What about you? Do you see yourself buying these old games?

[Thanks, JR]

Let 'em stay there. The only game that was worth dropping turds over was Phantasy Star.

Heh, I owned a game gear, at least the Wii can't run out of batteries in about 5 min of play time.

I'd drop a fiver for alex kidd. Nothing else on the system much appeals though. Phantasy star may have pleasant nostalgia, but the only way I could find playing it tolerable a couple of years ago was NOT emulated at 10X speed.

I had both Game Gear and Game Boy. And despite the color and backlit screen, I spent a helluva lot more time with the Game Boy. The Game Gear was weak sauce.

well as glad as I am to see my first system finaly on the VC, there's going to be alot of duplicate games now.

Wonder Boy 1 = Adventure Island for Nes
and
Wonderboy 3 = Dragon's Curse for TG16
and
Wonder boy 4 on Master System = Wonder boy in monster world on genesis AND The Dynastic Hero on TG16

i'm so confused

Phantasy Star! The first RPG I ever beat! Wow, that'll fit nicely in the VC. $69.99 it cost in 1989. Because it used a 4meg chip and a battery, oooh! hehe. The 3D dungeons though astounded me for the time. This is even before I played Wolfenstein 3-D. So seeing 3D Dungeons was like a revelation in those days.

I can't believe Fantasy Zone was abandoned by Sega. That game is the definition of trippy.

alex kidd made me return my master system. i bought it at toys-r-us, and was so underwhelmed by the included alex game that i returned it the same day. i didn't bother with home systems again until the genesis came out.

cool news. the picture caption fails though. i thought the style of master system covers were cool. they all had the universal white grid background, with the same title font, and a cool little cartoon to represent the game. stylish stuff.
