I hear this often, and it's starting to bug me. Yes, we know that Shenmue and the sequel did sell that well. But even more than that, I think Sega's still hurting from how much they spent to produce those games. Sure, they were large in scope, and the stretching of detailed facial textures for facial animation was a big deal at the time, but did it really cost that much? And if it did, what did the money go into? The only things that seemed expensive were the musical score and the voice work. And no, not our voice work. All I know is that Yu Suzuki drove away in a Ferrari and I never got my games.
Sega reminds again how poorly the Shenmue games sold. They told Famitsu that they still think about Shenmue a lot, but are scared of poor sales. They'd like to return to the franchise, but are afraid it will bomb for them again. They say thatif there is an opportunity to revisit the franchise, they would love to do it.
Look, Sega. We would be happy with Dreamcast-era graphics. We just want to hear the end of the story! It does not have to be an expensive game. Forget the voices. Just do text. Text and stretchy face textures. Lucky Hit too. And forklifts.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Just take a seat. Right over there.

"It didn't sell well enough to fix Sega's past fuck ups to bail them out of money problems."
as much as we all complain and bitch for a sequel, Sega's just doing a Yakuza 3 with the world and denying what's right in their face. That's just how horrible Sega's been for years.
this, but add dual analogue control, because playing II with one stick is fucking frustrating.
DO IT SEGA.
They make enough money with their Sonic shit they put out all the time.
And if not on the net, surveys could easily be put up on Live or PSN. And yes, if Sega were smart, they'd submit the first two Shen Mue games for download on both, and claw back some more money, while raising new fans for the series.
Shen Mue 1 or 2 for £/$5-10 each. A good trailer, spread it over formats (even if its the Xbox cuts on both PSN and Live) and people will bite.
As for a Shen Mue 3, if Sega can't handle the costs, go into co-production with Square or Bioware, something to get it done. But first, you good people have to invest in Yakuza 3 (and 4.
Sega fans, only you can make this game happen. Get to emailing Sega and let your voice be heard.
Sega of America does not invest the marketing dollars in their games to make them sell well over here. In japan, Yakuza 3 got a special white PS3 model to accompany it. That's damn good marketing on their part.
Here, we'll be lucky to even see a magazine ad or online banner for the game.
So, should they be afraid to release Shenmue again? Yes they should.
The Sega of today (especially here in the US) is too timid and conservative in how they work. I don't trust tem with their own game franchises anymore.
Look how much they whore out the Genesis/Master System today still. We've got the UGC disc and individual releases of all the same games on Xbox/PSN. They beat shit to death and are incapable of moving on from the past.
I'm just at a point where i had already expected to see Dreamcast games rereleased on modern consoles just to capitalize on all the good favor the Dreamcast still held with people like us.
Sega, I only want Shenmue again if you're going to man up and do it right. Half assing it doesn't cut it for me. I know you're not the same company you used to be and flogging your old wares like this is just a sad reminder of this VERY important point in considering a return to this series.
That way new people get the old story
old people get the ending
Lan Di !!!!
2. Release for Wii, XBLA, PSN, PS2
3. ?????
4. PROFIT
Also I would rather get a remake from the Yakuza team.
Bring out Shenmue 3 for the PS3, 360, and PC.
There, problem solved.
