A SEGA marketing ape has loosened his jaw in the latest Game Informer to reveal that "two of three" big Sonic the Hedgehog announcements are coming in the early portions of 2011. SEGA with some Sonic news ... what a unique concept!
"We're looking to improve the quality and focus of a pure Sonic platform gaming experience. We have released Sonic 4 digitally, which has reviewed very well," says marketing VP Alan Pritchard. "Free Riders was really about being a part of the launch of Kinect. Then, we have Colors, which is our pure Sonic gaming experience. That's had some high scores. It's also the highest pre-selling pure Sonic title we've ever had.
"But to your point, we have some announcements in the early part of next year that will further support and add to this strategy. There will be two of three big Sonic announcements in the early part of next calendar year."
One of those announcements will surely be Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode Two, and I'm guessing that the other major one will be Sonic Anniversary, the rumored collection of remade Sonic levels. That just leaves the annual Wii game, which would more than likely capitalize on the success of Colors.
Looks like I've got these announcements all sewn up. Does that mean I'm a games analyst now?

Of course if you're a Sonic fansite - EVERY 3D Sonic is the best thing ever! ESPECIALLY Sonic Free Riders!
SONIC ADVENTURE 3 confirmed
Sonic is dead. (Thank Pete!)
We're going to make games other than Sonic!
This is getting kind of ridiculous.
1) We are tired of all your bitching
2) Overly nit-picky fans have killed the franchise
3) No more Sonic titles will be made... EVER.
Sonic 4 Episode 2 is going to have to be very damn impressive to make up for those fun-murdering Lost Labyrinth levels and the mediocre Mad Gears levels in Ep. 1. And it all started out so well there, too. Green Hill and the casino stuff was great fun. Sonic Colors DS was far better.
Problem is, they all pale when placed against Nintendo's offerings. I would have felt better if they had put everything into making one good Sonic game. Nintendo didn't just put out mere platformers, they put out god-tier platformers this year and considering the had hard acts to follow, it just makes any other platformer look mediocre.
The big thing about Mario Galaxy 2 and DKCR in particular was the way in which they both constantly up the ante and change things up from level-to-level. forcing you to approach the game on fresh terms each level.
When Sonic is faced with a new gimmick, it tends to wear out its welcome while a Mario level discards a gimmick or builds on it in the subsequent levels.
If Nintendo collaborated with Sonic team on a Sonic game, if feel that sort of mentality would go into it, which is needed. Though I do also agree there are other Sega franchises I'd like to see get some love. You know, like Shenmue - I'd like the end of the story before Yu Suzuki keels over, thanks.
Sonic Anniversary
Mario and Sonic 3
You heard it here first, folks
I doubt it. The Storybook series was killed off after Black Knight reviewed - and likely sold - terribly. Hence why Colors exists.
I think TheOGB has it right. The third title is likely the rumored non-sports game featuring Mario and Sonic. My guess is that it will be a platformer, though I have no idea how it will work.
