Sega Gamer's Day '08: Golden Axe: Beast Rider screens

Sega Gamer's Day '08: Golden Axe: Beast Rider screens screenshot

All went a bit quiet on the Golden Axe front, but we now have a selection of new screens from its current-gen revitalization, Golden Axe: Beast Rider. The concept is simple -- take the monster spurring fun of the classic Golden Axe games, and expand it. A lot.

The graphics are decent (though not the best to come out of Sega) and the art direction is pretty cool, especially on the creatures. I do long for more old school Golden Axe combat though, as I think the beat 'em up genre is a disappointingly long-dead glory. That said, this could still turn out well. It could also blow chunks, so we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed.

If nothing else, riding on the backs of dueling ogres is certainly a selling point.

I just can't get excited about it since they took out character selection and co-op.

If I can still kick the potions out of those little thieves between levels, it's on.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. I've been playing a bit of the first three golden axes on sega genesis collection for the PSP and a proper next gen revival would be awesome.

Why are they doing this besides $$$? Seriously, I liked God of War too guys, that's awesome.

But this has nothing to do with why we liked Golden Axe. Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go watch Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

This does not look like the Golden Axe I used to play and love. What's with everyone trying to go 3D, I hope this game doesn't flop.

@Arugala9

Are they actually doing that? :(
Arugala9's Avatar
Arugala9 at 05/16/2008 15:52

@ Mix
Yep. You only get to play as the amazon (though apparently the warrior and dwarf are in the story) and there is no co-op. I read one story saying this is the warm-up and they are saving the co-op for the sequel. Which makes you wonder why bother with this game?

@Mix

I heard the next one in the franchise will have co-op.

Yeah they already used the F word. Mother franchisers.

This game doesn't sound good at all...why have they removed all of the cool parts?

That is very depressing news!

That's like saying: "Hey we have this here cheeseburger, with no cheese but buy it and we will soon have it WITH cheese, for more money of course, OMIEGAWD!

First MK is babying up the fatalities and now a Golden Axe with no co-op. Doesn't anyone tell these people that the core parts of their game shouldn't be monkeyed with? I'll pass on this one.

'Saving' co-op for a second game is a stupid move. Especially since it means they will turn around and say 'the first game didn't sell, so we're not making the second.'

Hey as long as Gilius Thunderhead is in the game I'm happy! But it's probably going to be a POS much like everything Sega has been releasing these days.

I'll still try it out even though it isn't how i'd hoped it would be. They should have took the Bionic Commando:Rearmed direction.

garbage. technically... golden axe and the likes werent beat 'em ups as much as they were percursors to the hack and slash genre, which isnt doing half bad with big names like god of war, ninja gaiden, and devil may cry all doing pretty well. and thats a major reason i believe they dropped the ball here... golden axe is known for its silly two player hijinks, not beast riding.. wth. ninja gaiden, devil may cry, and god of war are good solo games.. so why couldnt have they stolen a bit from those 3 games and added co-op.. that would have been win in my book. but nope.. we get this. meh.
