Sega Gamer's Day '08: Brand new Sonic Unleashed screens photo
     screenshots

Courtesy of Sega and its Gamer's Day, we have a set of new screenshots for you. Say what you will about the Weresonic idea and Sonic Team's track record, there's no denying that this title looks bloody beautiful, at the very least.

Of course, most Sega games have the looks, but it's the gameplay that matters and here is where Sonic Team consistently trips up. I am not yet prepared to totally write it off, but Sonic Unleashed follows a long string of console disappointments, so it remains to be seen whether Sonic Team can cut the mustard on modern home platforms.

We shall see.

These are fucking beautiful. Let us have a little faith. I'm giving them one last shot before I go to Japan and smack Yuji Naka myself. When he introduced the music at Video Games Live, I wanted to throw a drink at the screen. Fucking guy fails so hard these days.

I can't express how hard I'm praying for this game. If you look at Sonic Adventure (the first one, on the DC), we haven't had a Sonic game worth writing home about (at least favorable news) for almost ten years. If it sucks, I'm cutting Sega off. It'll hurt, but I can't do this anymore - it has to be a return to form in many, many ways. And if it turns out to be just that, then color me the happiest kid in the world.

No Sonic Unleashed.
You will not excite me. It's happened in the past and only led to disappointment and tears.

This is absolutly the wrong direction for the series: Nostalgia is going to KILL Sonic the Hedgehog.
I actually wrote a blog post where I try to articulate what's wrong with the franchise. Check it out

DROLL: Give them one more chance. Honestly, if the game captures the same feeling that the originals did, then it's fine by me. I just want working and functional game mechanics. Intuitive gameplay that's fun.

That's just the problem. I don't want to see Sonic try and "recapture" the magic of the old games. I want to see them use nearly 20 years of 3-D game design/development, and put Sonic in a game where he can legitimatly compete with the biggest and baddest games being released.
This easily looks like it could be released over XBLA, or the Playstation Store. I don't want to see Sonic trapped by nostalgic fans!

on topic:
I'm pretty fired up about this game, I've loved sonic in the beginning, was dissapointed by its first steps into 3D, and kept being dissapointed, yet I look forward to any Sonic game, as you can never know... one day they might find the way to do it right :-D

Well I looks like it'll be awsome but so did Sonic 2006.
Never the less I'll still be patient and wait for the actual game to come out before I judge.

Time to give Sonic a rest, Sega. He's not going to reach the kind of status he once had, and there are more deserving IP in your catalogue than this.

Where's a new Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi, Otogi, ESWAT or even freaking Burning Rangers? Burning Rangers is for more deserving, than more Sonic.

Better yet, where's the new IP (beyond the Platinum Games collaborations and Golden Axe)? Pushing remakes on Wii is cool, but something more is needed.

@COWBOY TTOP: But Sonic still SELLS like fuckin' hotcakes to the Sonic fans/furries that buy the games no matter how shitty they are. No offense, but Sonic still probably sells better than Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi, Otogi, or Burning Ragers would, just on namesake alone. Why would Sega give one of their biggest IPs a rest if it's a source of income?

Anyway, this game looks pretty, but is it just me or do the environments look a bit too "3D Studio Max-ish"? They've got this weird white ambient light thing going on that bugs me.

I'm still cautiously optimistic for this, even with the Wurrwilf stuff. As long as it's FUN, unlike Sonic 2006, I'll be happy. But we'll see.

@COWBOY TTOP: valkyria chronicles is a new ip coming soon. im actually excited about it kuz not only does it look cool... but it was developed by SEGA, not some western developer.

@ETERNALDEATHSLAYER: yuji naka left sonic team, so he has nothing to do with this game.
