Sega CEO refers to Wii software line-up as 'flood of crap' photo

We didn't notice it, but Sega of America CEO Simon Jeffrey seems to think there's a few lousy games on the Wii. In a recent interview with VentureBeat, Jeffrey actually uses the words "flood of crap" when talking about the Wii line-up.

"There is a lot of crap coming out for the Wii in general," he says. "But if it’s not a good game, it doesn’t sell. That flood of crap will die down as publishers become more coherent. The Wii is a great opportunity for hitting hardcore gamers. No one is doing that."

Jeffrey references the PlatinumGames-developed Madworld in reference to what Sega are doing to bring more "mature" software to the Wii. Time will tell whether or not the Wii market is really ready for such a title; one thing's for sure, though -- it's on our "do want" list.

But we have to ask: When some publisher's biggest selling titles could be considered part of this cheap-to-develop "flood of crap" (we're looking at you, Carnival Games), how willing will they be to continue pumping money into other types of titles?

I will agree with the "load of crap" part.

Last time I checked, The Wii doesn't have exclusivity on A Flood of Crap on it's console.

Both Sony and Microsoft have their fair share of crap to go around as well.

I agree thats why mines modded so I don't have to pay for crap. Last game I bought was brawl and nothing has enticed me since. Madworld will be a definite buy though and possibly the conduit.

All the systems get some crap, the Wii just gets more because it's (correct me if I'm wrong) cheaper to develop titles for. Also, there's tons of 'em. But the Wii market is definately ready for more of this stuff. Just look at the RE4 sales.

Also - do want Madworld.

We would like to think games like Madworld and Conduit will change the perception that most Wii games are crap but, the fact is that both of those games won't sell very well. Crap sells (especially on the Wii), while great games like Boom Blox, No More Heroes, and Zack & Wiki struggle to sell over 500,000 copies.

I agree with both the CEO and Yojimbo. I wish the Wii had less crap on it than the other two, but that's just not true.

I also completely agree that the Wii can be just as "hardcore" as the other systems if you find the right games, but that's just the problem --- There are almost none. While I'm excited for MadWorld, you don't need to have tons of blood and gore to make a game amazing, but developers just aren't taking the time to deliver.

All the games I have for the Wii are "hardcore," and by that, I mean no mini-game collections, horrible ports, or any other types of shovelware. But titles like that are getting harder and harder to find.

We all wish that Wii had less crap on it. But Sega isn't doing much to change the situation now are they? I'm looking at you Nights, Sega "Superstars" Tennis, and Sonic's Ring Run or whatever that garbage was called.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I believe both Sony and Microsoft also have substantially more "not-crap" to balance out the flood.

@the topic

Wii articles will mean something more to me when I actually manage to use the $250 I have in my account specifically for the miraculous day that I see a real live Wii in a store. Seriously, do they still make these things or do they have some guy somewhere whipping out 2 consoles a day?

Agreed. While the Wii does get quality games (No More Heroes, Boom Blox, Zack and Wiki, Blast Works). Unfortunately, they're buried beneath hundreds of Mario Party knockoffs. Still, got hopes for MadWorld and Fatal Frame IV. The more people buy the good games and the less this crap sells, the more good games we'll see.

Until people stop buying the shitty Wii Sports and mini game ripoffs they're going to keep releaseing them - it's easy money. And unfortunately money is what these companies (and Nintendo as a publisher/endorser) want.

It's a sad, sad, scenario, but people are idiots, what else can you say?

I agree. The Wii has a huge third party support, but all of the companies that develop games for it treat it like it's second rate just because it isn't HD. They have to start waking up.

Has anybody put two and two together and just figured out that the Wii isnt a profitable system? Maybe people are releasing crap for it because they've realized that its just a refurbished Gamecube? Makes sense to me.

Talk about taking his whole statement out of context. His point was that the Wii is really profitable for Sega as they have sold over 5 million copies of Mario, and Sonic. What has Sega sold on the 360/PS3 that has even come close to that? Absolutely nothing! Plus he also said that the Wii is a great opportunity for hardcore games like MadWorld. So why not read the article, and not just comment on the title?

I agree with the other comments that until the masses stop buying those "crap" games companies won't see a need to change.

Dead Rising = flood of crap? I don't think so. Most is dead on, a lot of Wii games are a pain in the taint, but some are pretty decent.

The Wii does have a lot of good games, but its proportion of crap to good is a lot higher than with the other consoles.

@Alias

One game dude, and its a watered down hacked up port so yes even with DR the wii still has a flood of crap.

All consoles have crap but the Wii sits head and shoulders above them all due how shitty games sell so much, I mean you guys do know that Carnival games has sold around 2 million copies right?

Like Icarus said, titles aimed at a more mature audience sell like crap or hell not just mature audiences, just unique like blast works and boom blox and they sell poorly compared to all the shovelware, Icarus mentioned Blast Works, you can buy that game now for 10 bucks, why? Cause it sold like 6,000 copies in a month, it bombed horribly.

Is anyone else not able to get excited about Mad World? Maybe I'm just not "hardcore" anymore or something, but I just can't see myself playing it for more than half an hour before putting it down.

How about giving us a proper Phantasy Star V or Skies of Arcadia 2?
