Sega bigs up Platinum Games, says MadWorld is so unique it 'aches' photo

Platinum Games is looking set to have a big year, generating a lot of talk with its two big Sega titles, Bayonetta and MadWorld. Understanding that it might just have a shot at some Triple A releases this year, Sega is not shy about bigging these games up.

Sega Europe COO & President Mike Hayes has admitted that so-called "casual" games are where the company has been most successful, but suggested that this year will see Sega reap the rewards of appealing to the "core" market.

"Madworld is so unique it aches," boasts Hayes. "Also, Bayonetta has to be one of the best looking 360 and PS3 games on the market. Cutting-edge Japanese developed titles such as those from Platinum Games will suit the western market perfectly."

It's sad that most Wii owners won't appreciate a game like MadWorld, and especially in England, some publicly whine that its violence "spoils" the Wii's fun image. Still, the blood-spattered brawler has been rated by the BBFC and is coming to Britain whether people who think they know what Wii games should be like it or not.

Well, I guess we'll find out in a few weeks, won't we?

Sweet jesus! Is he riding a motorcycle down the side of a sky scraper?? I dunno if I'll be buying a Wii for Madworld, but I know for a fact I will have to rent the system for it. God damn!

With the Wii and "hardcore" games, it's a real chicken or the egg situation.

So many people who don't own a Wii make a point of saying that the console is just a toy, that it's for old ladies and kids, etc. Then when titles like No More Heroes, Metroid Prime 3, and all the other good-to-great traditional action games come to the Wii, these same "hardcore" gamers make a point to ignore them in order to maintain their belief that the Wii is just a toy, that it's just for old ladies, etc.

As long as the "hardcore" enjoys hating the Wii, games like MadWorld wont sell as much as they should, and by that I mean that a lot of the people who would enjoy them will still refuse to buy them (and a Wii) just out of principal.

It makes me so sad that no one is promoting or excited about Infinite Line/Infinite Space. That's probably the Platinum game that I'm most jazzed for, and I hear narry a word spoken about it.

I owned one. I don't regret selling it, but I'm not above renting the year's good game or two to play on a friend's system and telling them to give it a look. It's the best I can do, because they like awesome games and they as aware as I am how sparse they've been on the thing.

I'm not so sure about Mad World, I gotta admit the screen shots alone seem to give me a headache.

@ atastsammich- We musy have very different taste in games, because I get at least one quality Wii game a month.

This month it's been Castlevania III, which sort of doesn't count, but it's still a game I could get on the other consoles.

I just read a hands-on with Madworld on IGN. Apparently the combat is very similar to No More Heroes. Your main attacks are button presses, with waggle reserved for context sensitive moves (like combo-enders and throws), and control of the chainsaw. The prospect of tastefully implemented motion control returning to my life again makes me giddy. Time to get excited folks.

I'm definitely excited for Sega's 2009 Wii lineup. MadWorld looks awesome, as does House of the Dead: Overkill and The Conduit.

I'm also intrigued by Deadly Creatures. If the game is as good as the trailers, it'll be pretty awesome.

I am. It's one of the few DS titles I'm looking forward to. It's a shame there's so much crap in the DS market right now.

Jonathan Holmes, you are absoloutely right.

I can't believe that people are saying the Wii has no games. Every market leading console is plagued with a ton of garbage but because the Wii's garbage is targeting a new audience its as if the traditional gamers are becoming offended and are embarrassed to own a the machine. It's really a pathetic thing.

MadWorld is looking great and it deserves to sell. Hope these guys are rewarded for their efforts.

The only problem I might see with the game is short completion time, and little to do afterwards, other than that it's a pretty amazing game.

Do you know why people have said Wii has no games before, perri? It's because the Wii really didn't have that many good games, then all of a sudden 2009 looks awesome.

I'm kinda worried the game won't have any depth, but I remain optimistic it's going to kick every other Wii game square in the nuts with a sledgehammer. Yeah.

@CALkulon: Allow me to assuage your worries. It isn't going to have any depth. It's specifically designed to be an old school beat-em up with an emphasis on score. The constraints of its genre limit it in that respect . . . but I'd imagine it will be one of the finest examples ever of what it's actually trying to be.

"As long as the "hardcore" enjoys hating the Wii, games like MadWorld wont sell as much as they should"

Exactly the so called "hardcore gamers" act like its the casuals fault for them not getting great core games. But in actuality its they're own fault, for not buying the great hardcore games on the system. The casuals go out and buy the games that they like, so why don't the hardcore gamers do the same, and stop just whining about it. As for the "short completion time" didn't they say it was a 13-15 hour game with local multiplayer?

So a 15 hour game for $50 seems like a great time VS value to me, considering people pay $60 for 6-8 hour games on the 360/PS3, and don't complain about it. If a game is good then its worth buying its as simple as that, and from reading IGN's hands-on preview of the game. It seems like its a great game both graphics, and gameplay wise.

Games that have been ported to the Wii or are multi-platform games do not count. This rules out the Virtual Store and any of the multiplatform titles for the Wii.

Face facts, the really good 'core' games that the Wii has are as follows:
-Twilight Princess
-Mario Galaxy
-Metroid Prime 3
-No More Heroes
-Madworld
-Smash Bros. Brawl

Two of these games I own (Twilight Princess and Brawl), I played Mario Galaxy and I didnt really feel like playing an updated version of Mario 64. I've never been a Metroid fan, the Prime series on the failcube never changed that. I'm probably going to try No More Heroes and Madworld at the same time, after I beat my good games for my other systems.

These are games that have been released since the start of the Wii's era. I could put together a list longer than this of core games that have hit the PS3 and/or 360 in six months. The fact isnt that 'hardcore' gamers ignore core games for the Wii, its just that you can only give so much attention to six games.

I agree with you Seph. Out of the games you've listed many of them aren't universally accepted as good games. Many people don't enjoy them. For example I didn't like Galaxy at all, SSBB was a disappointment, and I didn't enjoy MP3 (and I loved the original Metroid Prime).

You did forget Paper Mario though. Somewhat enjoyable but the game was too gimmicky to be a really big draw (the 2d-3d gimmick not the waggle gimmick).

@ Seph- There are a lot more good games on the Wii than that. de Blob, World of Goo, Resident Evil, blah blah blah, you've heard it all before. A lot of these games may not interest you, and that's fine, but just know that there are a lot of non-casual Wii games that maybe you haven't played that are pretty damn fun.

But that's a topic for another blog.

@ Logo- Here's my big list of games that are "universally accepted as good".

(cue crickets chirping).

I think the mention of the absolutely wonderful Super Paper Mario brings up an important point that lies at the core of the "no good games on wii" blah blah blah argument that rages consistantly. Or, at least, my main opinion on the subject. (Please keep in mind that anything I say here will not be in referrence to Virtual Console titles. They are not Wii games . . . but other system's games that are available on the Wii)

Good games exist on the Wii. This is so barely objective that it borders on fact. It is something that no intelligent gamer with an propensity for any sort of critical anaylsis will deny. The real question that bothers me is not "are there good games on the Wii?," but, "how necessary is it that these good games actually be on the Wii?"

With the exception of the masterful Zack & Wiki and Lost Winds, I can think of no game on the Wii that I have enjoyed wherein the motion controls and IR functionality have actually been inseparable parts of the game that could not be mapped to analogues or simply omitted.

It is not a topic for debate that underneath the hood, the Wii is little more than a souped-up Gamecube. When one removes Wii remote functions, one is left with little else than a game that would have been impressive 3 years ago.

The Wii's unfortunately mired in a sludge of it's own outdatedness. Motion controls in many of my favorite titles are either dispensible additions, ignorable gimmicks, or desperate attempts to breath fresh life into otherwise outdated mechanics.

This brings me back to Super Paper Mario (SPM). SPM is not a Wii game. It is a Gamecube game. It was developed for the Cube over the course of 2 years, then delayed, injected with forgettable IR and motion functions, and released on the Wii.

This is the feeling I get with many of my favorite Wii games. Every time I boot up Metroid Prime 3, or think about Madworld. I wonder to myself whether or not these wonderful and ambitious titles wouldn't have been better served 1) Coming out years ago, or 2) on a console with more power and better integrated network and High def technology.

I feel I am not alone in this. Many who believe the Wii to be passable don't necessarily think that the games on the Wii are bad as a rule . . . they just find them unecessary. They have moved on to larger consoles, that provide them with more advanced, evolved experiences that are more difficult to pass on.

Personally I like the Wii, and enjoy loads of games on it. But I can sympathize with many who feel this way . . . and I find the opinion entirely justified.

@Mr Gilder

So basically what your saying is "if this game was on 360/PS3 it would be so much better"?

and yeah it probably would be but I can't really think that way it's like people whining about a final fantasy 4 remake on the DS and wanting it on the PS3.

If there is a fun and enjoyable game on the Wii that isn't on any other system then I will just enjoy it on the wii. Theres not much point in wondering what it would be like on better hardware, if it's game like Deadrising or CoD5 then yeah go for the 360/PS3 one.

I guess the way alot of games don't use the wiimote in better ways kind of sucks but alot of my favorite DS games barly use the touch screen and again if happens to be a fun game I dont find my self wondering where the motion controles are I just get on with enjoying the game.
