That video was trying so hard to be cool. At least it's pretty! I'm almost to the point I don't care. It doesn't look that much better than what we have now.
I guarantee you the focus will be the console and to unlock graphics like this PC users will have to write the code themselves.
They're a special kind of plot helmet, designed specifically to cover faces and make multiple people look indistinct and almost identical.
Actual uses as a helmet, not so much.
The Cry engine was shown off in real-time while this video is pre-rendered... how can you even compare that.
Meh, looks pretty, but what doesn't these days. And I was disapointed, where was the Next-Gen texture pop? Oh well.
I like you. Glad I'm not the only person who noticed that.
@lokhe Is this really pre-rendered? Still looks tight though.
Would be a healthy competition between id tech 5, Frostbite 2.0 and UE4, just to name a few.
Doesn't show anything really new like global environment lighting or being able to handle large open worlds, which UE has never been able to do (STALKER and CryEngine say hi).
Frostbite 2's shaping up to look better.
Also, did anyone else get Abe's Odysse cutscene vibes off it?
That said if UE3 is as much of "the engine" to use these days, then I'd be totally okay with this sort of thing being the standard.
I'm in the same camp, but c'mon, it's not like graphics are going to stop advancing. Just because the engine is updated and now capable of producing higher quality visuals doesn't mean that gameplay has to suffer because of it; that's in the hands of the devs.
Ofc it is! look at a game that uses Unreal Engine 3 and compare it to this video... it is pretty obvious :p Games do not look like this, yet.
half of you don't realise how much of a step thios is though, and you won't see this version on the consoles til next gen because of the DirectX11 efects in use.
also it is all included in UDK, since you can't use UDK for consoles anyway so i don't know what everyone is coimplaining about, everything is included, this isn';t CliffyB PR bullshit, it's theior serious staff showing off truely impressive work.
Kiddie site, through and through!
they said future consoles, they know it can be done on PCs now, how else is it running?
it's 3 GT580s i'm pretty surte, due to the tessellation and new shaders effects.
Bad news is with his flamboyant character CliffyB has become the defacto talking head of Epic Games in most people's mind. It did not help that he also had a strange speaking roll about the failure of middle ground developers at the developers conference.
But yes you are correct that this really is not aimed at gamers but developers, hence the conference name, to invest or to continue to invest in UE3 technology. Though we all know no "big developer" will use this technology until the next generation of consoles this is more advertisement than anything else.
I know it is 3 of them, and I can bet Crytek or Id could beat them face down if their demos were out at the same time. And why would you put out visual candy demo that could be done today and name it new and future? Should we all go back to console tech all of a sudden? Marketing retarded much, ha Epic? It is just stupid. No it is smart, the demo is making all other stupid for believing them. Of course, we all know the next generation of consoles will again be last year tech that is viable to put in a console, but that doesn't make it new, futuristic in terms of tech or stellar. That is the point. Except if you wont to live in a lie...
It's supposed to be "in game", was rendered real time. Well, it was done on monster of a PC, but still. However it's pretty obvious that to get this kind of visual effect in game, you'd need to get insane attention to every detail of enviorments, animations, camera work etc etc. Technicalities probably will be on this level, all these shadows, reflections and textures.
I for one was already satisfied with these technicalities 2 years ago.
I agree that graphics are just part of the equation. For some reason AI still hasn't made the same jump as gfx and sound. So now we're stuck with games that look and sound the part, but lack the brains. :-(
Still a cool tech demo, though.

btw, anyone else starting to get pissed off with those CoD:BO banner ads that take up the whole screen?
I'm with you. Let someone come up with an amazing AI "engine", or a perfect method of collision detection, and then I'll be excited. Improved lighting effects is awesome and everything, but it just doesn't excite me that much as a gamer.
People should probably understand what a tech demo is before opening their mouths.
