The Japanization of BloodRayne saddens me. While I'm sure there are people who will enjoy this, I feel that as a long time fan of the series, I am getting the short end of the stick.
This is basically the exact same thing that is going on with Prey 2, where the(direct or otherwise) sequel is nothing like the previous game(s). The difference being that I've had my fill of Metroidvania games and after watching this footage, I can't find anything that attracts me. Which, again, saddens me.
Here's hoping that they can fund a true sequel(meaning one that actually plays like the old games) from the sales figures of this downloadable title.

I think it looks absolutely fantastic, although I must admit I was disappointed to hear that there are no unlockable characters. I was really hoping for a 'Shantae' alternate costume...
@Ramm: Sometimes change can be good. In the cad of Prey 2, I'm digging it hardcore. Yeah it sucks Tommys not the main guy, but I'll give generic action dude a shot. As for Bloodrayne, I truly hope we do get a proper sequel down the line, but I loves mah metroidvaynia. The clear art style is sweet (IMO) and I'm not an anime guy. To each his own though.
@PhilK3nS3bb3n: While I might be dramatizing a little much, my point still has merit, I loved the WW2-era(read: nazi-filled) third-person action/adventure with mild Tony Hawk-like stylings of the first two games, so it's only natural that the sequel be somewhat in the same ballpark, no?
I mean, if this was basically a 2-D side-scrolling version of that, I would be somewhat satisfied, however, it seems that this is taking a more anime look and with it, the theme also seems to have shifted from Rayne being a Nazi killer, to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Having recently played a metroidvania game, I was expecting something different when I first heard of this game's announcement!
As far as Prey 2 goes, I love me some Mass Effect, Star Wars, Metroid, Blade Runner, etc. But if I wanted to play those games, I would(and I can, actually, those are all existing universes). I don't really know how I feel with one of my favorite FPS' becoming a (high probability)3rd Person Parkour Bounty Hunter-themed RPG. Don't get me wrong, the idea sounds bad-ass! But it doesn't fit being paraded as a direct sequel to Prey 1!
You can make an awesome anime-inspired 2-D, side-scrolling metroid-vania game, but, why take the name of an intellectual property that has nothing in common with it? My theory? Simply that publishers don't want to take a risk on a new IP. They don't want to stick their necks out and have jaded gamers say 'this isn't Game Sequel #12, NO BUY!' so they chose a name and name-brand that is already established and has somewhat(no matter the size) of a reputation.
It's a trend that I'm no too fond of. I know Prey 2 will be awesome and I can tell this will be a good metroidvania game, I just wish we could have two brand new IP's to be excited about right now, instead of sequels that are sequels in name only. Sorry for the rant! /fanboy

Watched them play this during the Saturday Morning Hangover show and have to say, I was really impressed by it.
