See the difference Wii component cables make photo

If you are tired of seeing GameCube graphics on your Wii, it's time to pick up those component cables. In fact, on my HD set, when I hook up the Wii through composite cables, some games actually look somewhere between N64 and PlayStation 2. Anyway, GameSpot has a nice little comparison up of the drastic difference between the hook ups.

If this isn't the biggest selling point into a component investment, I don't know what is.

It's almost scary. Check out the Monkey Ball one. That's pretty hilarious. Does HD matter now Nintendo? Wait till they see how many HD sets are bought up this Xmas in the U.S. I smell a tune change coming.

Summa, while I agree that it makes a big difference, I think the Monkey Ball one isn't actually a picture of the same game point. In fact, none of them are, though they're close (in particular, look for the fairy in the Zelda shots and the change in camera position in the Tony Hawk one, neither of which could've been the result of a mere resolution change). I'm guessing Gamespot took a screenshot, quickly (but not instantaneously) clicked Home, changed the resolution, then went back and took another screenshot.

It seems pretty obvious to me what happened with Monkey Ball: the ship, or whatever that thing is, is flashing rapidly. The sky is also very different, to the point that it's ridiculous to suggest that it was merely a resolution change. 480i, that is, does not equal inverted colors in only a few areas, like the sky and the ship, but correct colors everywhere else.

Obviously, the fact that they're different screenshots doesn't really matter when it comes to showing off the quality of the graphics, but Gamespot could have done just a LITTLE better with the SMB one, because as it is it's misleading.

Or at least, it misled YOU, Summa. For shame. Hasn't your experience with the New York Times taught you anything? You should know by now not to take what people say online at face value, especially game journalists with a bone to pick.

Why is it that Nintendo has a hard time embracing certain formats? With the N64 they decided to stick with carts, with the Gamecube, they decide that online is not important, now with the Wii, they leave out high def. Obviously people want this option, why are they so hesitant to delve into certain areas?

This definitely is not convincing me to go towards component right now.

High Definition is still not being purchased or used enough of the users to make it worthwhile. If Nintendo were to take the Wii and have made it to use 1080i or 1080p, then the games would look even more like crap and the system would cost more. Resolution is the biggest strain on system hardware. Sure, Nintendo could have then upped the hardware, but that's another $100 just to make use of it. So chances are if Nintendo were to take that route, they would either have ended up another Xbox 360 wannabe, or have their console cost $500 or more.

I'm glad Nintendo took this route. I don't have an HD TV and it's going to be some time before I even bother.

Hell people bitched when Nintendo announced the Wii to cost $249.99. Imagine how much you would have complained if it was $399 or $499.

Not to mention the fact that going from composite cables to damn near anything would have the same effect.

Le Guru, I don't think anybody thought what you're saying. The graphics look sharper at 480p, but they certainly don't CHANGE PINK TO BLUE. And Summa knows that.

Other than the color change they're practically identical (maybe even looks a little worse over component thanks to the crappy aliasing of things like the flag), so I'm assuming he thought it was the resolution change that did it. Feel free to point out where I was wrong!

Gamespot is biased and I wouldn't put it past them to doctor up the images to 'enhance' the differences.
