Secret of Mana comes to iPhone this month photo

Classic action-RPG Secret of Mana is coming to the iDevices this month, at least according to producer Masaru Oyamada. He says that it's done, and that it's aiming to release before iTunes locks out all App updates for six days on the 23rd.

All other details are a mystery. Square has revealed that the game will not cost $0.99, but that it will be cheaper than Chaos Rings. Unfortunately, that puts the price anywhere between two bucks and twelve dollars, so that's not saying much.

Secret of Mana is a classic top-down action RPG that was originally released on the SNES. People basically love it, so I expect this'll shift a few copies. Unless they arrogantly charge ten bucks for the thing. How much would you pay for an iOS port?

I'd gladly pay $3 to $5 for it. This is one of my top games of all time. Memories....

I just really hope they release it for the Android as well and that the controls work. Because if it controls anything like the SNES emulated version I'd rather not play it.

Good news for everyone who loved Secret of Mana!
I personally honestly did not like Secret of Mana at all.
I felt that the combat system wasn't fun and always boiled down to
Attack -> Run back -> wait for attack to recharge -> repeat
And I couldn't get the hang of the menu system, which frustrated me to no end.

But I'm probably just weird, so there is that.

Give me Legend of Mana and I'll be all over it.

But Secret of Mana's combat has aged like shit.

As long as its an iPad app I'd be willing to pay up to $5 for it. If its only an iTouch/iPhone app I wouldn't pay a penny for it as I don't plan to buy either of those and have little interest in using iPhone/iTouch only apps on an iPad.

Even if one doesn't like the attack system (which can be a bit annoying), it definitely has one of the best soundtracks of all time which should be worth a few bucks. What I'd love to know however is if this is basically the SNES version that was released in the west, because apparently the original Japanese version featured a lot more story (or dialogue) that was apparently cut for the Western release.

Not any more than $5. While I definitely loved this game as a kid, even then I was aware of some of its... problems.

Does it have multiplayer? If not, I flat-out won't buy it.

It's probably going to be $8.99. I mean, look at FF1 and FF2's price. :| I'd be surprised if it was lower than that, honestly.

I wonder how much FFT is gonna be, and if it'll not have the PSP version's notorious slowdown.

My memories of playing this are foggy, but I would prob pick it up for nostalgia alone at $3 or under.

I expect them to charge much more for it in which case I will pass until price drop.

I guess it depends on if I had friends with iDevices and this game had co-op support

Release Seiken Densetsu 3 in English now, and I might buy an iPhone just for it

@lenigod: Um, all pronunciations are correct. Though I too have always said "snes". Probably stayed with me from the comic from Nintendo Power that had the character Nes. Hmm. I should go back and play Secret of Evermore. I only beat Secret of Mana 3 times (got half way through it a dozen times though)

This, as in any 16bit-era game isn't exactly new to the mobile scene. There have been emulators on smart phones for quite some time now.

I guess I'm the only one excited for an Android-based Playstation phone. I've been using my Droid's keyboard to play SNES and GBA emulated games for over a year, and I'd gladly trade for a phone with a dedicated gamepad.

My friend and I just kicked the shit out of that game on the Wii VC. Im not a fan of game ports on my iPhone, I would rather have actual buttons. It should be 99 cents, because it'll probably control terribly. And what about the multiplayer? SoM supports great drop in, drop out multiplayer that I just don't see possible on an iDevice. And that was kind of the funnest part of the game, IMO.
