Secret Halo 3 vehicle revealed!

4:52 AM on 10.28.2007, Hamza CTZ Aziz 50 comments

     Halo
Everyone loves the replay feature in Halo 3. Everyone, except probably Bungie -- especially in cases like this video. This "new vehicle" can be found on the level with the first boss battle with the Scarab. Get two people into the dumpster, tip it over, then both players need to jump at the same time and watch as the dumpster becomes airborne. You can even steer the dumpster!

Awesome glitch, now my only question: How does someone stumble upon such a crazy glitch? This does gives a whole new meaning to dumpster diving! Am I right?!

Oh man. Tell me we can add those dumpsters into our maps as decorations in Forge. Think of the tactical implications of a two-person flying vehicle that doesn't catch a lock from the missile pod! Better yet, stick a territory in the dumpster, do two person teams, and vie for control of the floating garbage can. Awesome.

Funniest thing I've seen in a while. A flying steerable dumpster with room for two.

What I want to know is how the hell does a glitch like that even happen? I mean really, who the hell coded the physics of the dumpster in such a way that jumping enables controlled flight?

Still funny as hell though, even if it is sloppy programming.

Just to be clear the band is focus. The song name is Hocus Pocus. I think they had one other minor hit but never matched this song in popularity

HAHAHA! I love it. Capitalizing on the physics of a game like this is epic. I mean really, can we call that a glitch or would it be better to call it an exploit. Bungie keeps the "gravity" in their games pretty low. That's why the player and other objects in the game seem to float for just a little bit. These guys are a genius for thinking of this, if they are the ones that found it.
brad drac's Avatar
brad drac at 10/28/2007 10:42
My guess is that this works because bungie didn't code the player models to exert downwards force when they jump in their physics engine. This would mean most of the (virtual) energy would be transferred into the dumpster. Without the equal downward force caused by the upward propulsion, more energy would go into the roof than the floor. Hence, floatiness and japery. If that postulation is correct, you'd steer it like a rowing boat, by altering the rate at which one of the sides jump. Funky glitch though, hopefully bungie won't fix it.

I think it just clinched Game Of The Year. That is seriously the most hilarious, brilliant thing that I have seen in a game in recent memory, especially when combined with that music.

Does anyone know how to rip the FLV file from the page, as in saving it to my computer? I need this.

@ brad drac
That does sound good, but that doesn't quite account for why it only works with two people. Haven't tried it but I'd imagine that with one person it just does enough to tilt the thing over, but with two I guess there's enough energy to push it up. What I don't get is how it coninues forward if your only jumping up, unless part of the art of dumpster flying is jumping up and what little forward you can in the confined space. Otherwise, awesome glitch find, I'm trying it out as soon as I can

->Calavera: I imagine one person just can't jump fast enough to counteract gravity with their mighty headbutts. As for movement, seeing as halo allows for mid air direction change, the player colliding with the wall of the dumpster while holding forward would change the its momentum, the same way as would jumping into any other moveable object.

Reminds me of prop flying in Source, except this looks easier to pull off. In source, if something's small enough that you can grab it and pick it up, you can put it on the ground, jump on top, and continiously jump and pick it up and land on it and jump off and pick it up to fly with it. I've never been able to really fly very far or high with it, but some people have managed to get it to do amazing things:

The end of that video. They speed it up, because it takes quite a while to get real height with it.

Bungie shouldn't think this a disadvantage. They should try putting guns on the dumpster, et voila, a cult, fan-favourite vehicle. :oD

Debugged in 2 seconds:

Colliding with the dumpster gives an impulse to the dumpster. Normally when you collide with things this happens.

However, JUMPING from the dumpster does NOT give an impulse to the dumpster, in violation of physics. This is because halo characters normally don't jump off of diving boards where jumping could cause some physical reaction.

Hence the bug.
