Seahawks receiver unhappy with Madden rating, boycotts game photo

Sure, the annual Madden ratings are a big deal to football players -- and for the particularly egotistical ones, it’s natural to feel that the game doesn’t properly assess their talents. But this one crosses a bit too far into ridiculousness. Seattle Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (that’s HOOSH-mund-ZA-deh) feels that Madden NFL 10 has underrated him at a 91, so in a show of protest, he declared on Colin Cowherd’s ESPN Radio show on Monday that he won’t be playing the game.

Houshmandzadeh had played his entire career for the Cincinnati Bengals until he signed with the Seahawks during the offseason, and what’s the first thing he did, before even playing a preseason game in a Seahawks uniform? Why, blame his former team for his shortcomings, of course:

Man, they don't get my rating right ... I just looked at the game and they have this wrong and that wrong. And I understand I averaged 10 yards a catch [in 2008], but it's the offense, man, not me.

In case you were wondering, Madden 10 lists Houshmandzadeh as the sixth-best receiver in the NFC; the five ranked above him (co-cover athlete Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Smith, Anquan Boldin, Roddy White, and Calvin Johnson) each had at least two more touchdowns than he did in 2008, and he’s the only one of the six who didn’t have at least 1,000 yards receiving. It sounds to me like the ratings are pretty fair.

Of course, he claims he’s better than the numbers say he is -- even though sports videogame ratings are generally based on the prior year’s statistical performance -- and he’s adamant that EA Tiburon has wronged him (though he admits that “it might be a little pouting, too”). “I’m not playing Madden no more [sic], until they get my rating right,” he whines. For Seahawks fans’ sake, let’s hope he puts his money where his mouth is in the 2009 NFL season.

So, whining about getting a rating of 91 (out of what I assume is 100) is the jock equivalent of whining when a game you like only got an 8.6?

T.J. Houshmandzadeh will always be a Bungle to me, which means he has 0 credit (especially from a Raven fan's perspective) ;D

@Dexter345 no, it's worse than that; it's the jock equivalent of whining when a game you like only got a 9.1!

I believe the star receiver is joking, guys...
It's been a common comical rib against EA for NFL players to disagree with their player rating(s).
I've seen interviews with NFL players joking that they are not rated high enough. None of the players ever seemed angry or upset.
This player's remarks are probably taken out of context.
Carry on...

Seriously? 91 out of a 100 I guess is a pretty good score. How big is this guy's ego?

What a bitch. I already had little respect for Housh, and things like this don't help his case. Every one of those receivers IS better than him (except MAYBE White). Shut your mouth and get ready for the season.

Yawn. I've never heard a real football player moan about their Fifa, Pro Evo or Champ Man (Football Manager now) before in my whole life. They should just take him out of the game and replace him with a monkey or something.
A monkey would be good at this hanball game you have, I would give him a 92.

While his bellyaching may be in jest, he is probably unaware that EA is making an effort this year to normalize the previously inflated player ratings. His 91 should land him in one of the top percentiles in terms of player talent. I think, were he to play the game, he would find his 91 stacks up favorably against a more realistically rated secondary.

Either way, doesn't matter. I'm with IzekialRage.

The Steelers will dominate for a second year in a row. Get out them Terrible Towels!

It'll be funny when the midseason update puts his score in the low 80s. Enjoy life without Ochocinco, Housh.

I'll never understand behavior like this. If this isn't a joke this guy has issues. Just be glad you are able to play the game at the professional level, there are other guys out there that would give their left nut to be where you are at now, you little ungrateful bastard.

Also on a separate point, did you hear about Lebron's little tiff over this video of him getting dunked on Samit? I saw it yesterday, some college player from Indiana dunked on him in some scrimmage game for some event. Instead of him laughing it off he went around to Nike, who was filming the event, and asked for the tapes so he wouldn't been seen by everyone getting dunked on. Well guess what moron, they video got out, lots of people have seen it, and you look like more of a moron now. Instead of taking it in stride you get all butt hurt, and you look like more of a vane prick now than you did before.

I listened to an interview with two guys from the Madden 10 team (I think lead designer and someone else, but I'll swear to nothing) the other day and they were saying that a guy rated 61 in this year's game would have been about an 85 last year due to changes they've made toward spreading out the ratings. At that rate he would have been rated 126/100 last year so he really needs to stop complaining.

I have to disagree with your point that ratings are generally based on stats. Actually, Madden has a team of guys who watch hours and hours of tapes and rate the players based on the skills they observe. Sure, the guys with better stats tend to have higher ratings, but that's more of a correlation that exists due to players with better talent putting up better numbers, really. You can't discern a player's pass blocking or ability to break tackles based only on statistics, after all!

Also, I don't know if Housh should be roasted for having a big ego, here. I think this story mostly seems ridiculous because it has been blown up so much. It was on the main stories section for MSN.com yesterday, for God's sake? A guy's decision not to play Madden for a year is big news?

Let's be honest here...none of us would take kindly to being given a number that we don't feel properly reflects our abilities in our career or biggest pursuit in life. Shit, Samit himself would crap a brick if Game Writer '10 came out and gave him an 84 rating in grammar.

@Corak: Yeah, I heard about it. I didn't realize LeBron was being such a baby about it, though -- what I heard was that it was Nike who went around grabbing up the tapes. Whatever. I saw the footage and thought, "Why is this a big deal?"

@akathatoneguy: That's why I said "generally." Obviously, more goes into it than just stats, especially for the "intangibles" that differentiate the best players from the merely good ones, but it seems to me that stats are the majority factor in determining ratings.

Well, agree to disagree I guess, but I wouldn't even say "generally". Honestly, I can't think of really any ratings that can be determined by raw data without observation in Madden. Perhaps speed or strength, but those would be more determined by 40 times or bench press reps, such as at the combine. I suppose you could determine a "catch" rating by looking at receptions to dropped passes, or use a player's fumbles to determine things, but otherwise, you have to watch the players to observe what they can do. I could see a baseball game having ratings determined largely by stats, but not a dynamic sport like football where, say, a receiver's stats are determined by so many things (ie do they play in the slot, are they the first option for most plays, what kinds of routes do they run, does their QB have good accuracy, etc.). Or what about running backs? No way could you determine their ratings by stats alone or even partially by stats. Stats reaffirm their success, but so much of their success is the result of a balanced offensive attack, good blocking and intangibles...well, I'm rambling now.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to nit-pick, but...well, I probably did anyway. My bad.
