When you have a name like Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka, that alone might be enough to turn a few heads. However, when you are associated with a name as respected as Konami and make ballsy admissions that you just aren't prepared for the modern multi-platform setting -- you just might flat out floor some folks.
During an interview with PSM3 magazine, Takatsuka decided it was best to "come clean" about Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 on the PlayStation 3, and what it means for future development of the series.
"It's so far from what we wanted. In fact, we thought about delaying it but different factors meant we had to release it. As a developer, we've worked the same way since the days of the SNES. We're simply not set up for multi-platform development. PES 2009 is in development, but after hearing the criticism, we'll be taking it back to the drawing board. It might not be next year, but it will be soon".
This admission comes following criticisms that the game suffers from serious framerate issues, as well as a less than desirable online multiplayer experience. If there's any silver lining to this, it's that Takatsuka is brutally honest with himself concerning the game's shortcomings. Unfortunately, no matter who you decide to blame for developers having such a hard time making multi-platform games shine on Sony's beast, the end result remains the same -- this is but another setback (in a sea of many) for Sony's plan to dominate the market once again.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Nah I haven't had a say in a while (ever since the Jade Raymond thing)
Anyway
I'm sick to death over this Xbox 360 Vs PS3 fanboy battle.
Who the fuck cares anymore?
Both loose!
PC FTW!
Pffft, soccer.
To everyone else going "OMG OBLIVION WORKED GOOD." This is one developer, stating his opinion on how it is to program for a system. Don't go ape shit because one person prefers to code for another platform, it's called "preference". Go look it up sometime.
What I really think Seabass should be addressing is why the quality has been declining on Pro Evo over the last couple years, above complaining about how it is to program for one platform. Wheres his excuse for the framerate issues on the 360 version?
I can tell you why PS3 developers are running into trouble. They see people buying up crappy Wii games like crazy, and just so dumbfounded and emotionally crushed that they don't want to keep up with what they're doing, anymore.
* Im OK: "The fact that consumers still continue to buy games like this, even though they're released in a broken state, is a big part of the problem as well, as it teaches the publishers/developers that they can get away with half-assed measures."
Damn straight.
