If there is an MMO on the horizon that even my MMO disliking ass could get excited for it's definitely Star Wars: The Old Republic. Not only is it BioWare developed, but it's Star Wars. As if you weren't sold on that alone it was announced at Comic-Con that the game will be doing something that the last three films (not chronologically) did not and that is to actually have wars in the stars. Yes, The Old Republic will have space combat.
How will that work? I'm glad you asked, because I've pasted this quote about it for you: "Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various 'hot spots' on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars space battles."
Sounds interesting... I think. I'm not really 100 percent sure on it, but as we get more details it will probably sound more awesome. Hell, even if it is just a strange sidequest thing, it should be a great added bonus.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This is a very awesome development. I can't wait to get my hands on this game. As an MMO, everything is in it's favor so far.
I feel that I'm past the MMO phase myself, but the Old Republic does interest me most out of all the current MMO's, especially since there is talk of space combat. I remember that SW: Galaxies tried doing the same , but that was already after they killed the game with constant changes and such. I really hope that BioWare does it right.
Thanks again for that X-Wing image :) Good memories.
@EternalDeathSlayer
There was. 1 closed with a space battle (which was uninteresting), while 3 opened with one. I actually liked the one in 3 because it did a good job of establishing Obi-Wan and Anakin's relationship for the film and, as a bonus, was pretty fun to watch.
It was nice to hear devs so excited about a starwars game that was also a hybrid fps.
HOWEVER-
I will NEVER pay a monthly access fee to a MP online game. After purchasing the right to play the game the sale is final.
They would have to give access to the game for free- then I could consider paying monthly fees - otherwise they have transferred all risk to the customer and the customer has lost rights without any remuneration. That is simply a theft of service scheme.
I suggest the way to cover their server costs is to - make better games and thus - sell more games.
I am in the business of consuming games - not selling profit margin insurance to game publishers like EA.
If they want insurance they can contact AIG or Solomon Brothers.
"That is simply a theft of service scheme."
Then don't buy it. Calling it theft just makes you look like an idiot, though. It's not like it's not known up front exactly what the costs of the game are going to be. If you don't like it, tough. Millions of other people can deal with it, though.
"I suggest the way to cover their server costs is to - make better games and thus - sell more games. "
But this is really want I wanted to draw attention to. I'm used to seeing the usual whining, but this made me flat-out laugh out loud. You mean to tell me that your proposal is that a game that loses money from server costs... should (I'm still laughing here)... make MORE games that loses money from server costs?
Hahahaha... what???? I mean come on, that is funny.
"The current Star Wars MMO (Galaxies) actually has this feature as well. But we won't talk about that one. It's not very pretty."
Honestly, JTL was probably the best thing that ever happened to SWG, as sad as that is.
