SDCC: The Rock won't be in Gears photo

Lot's of gaming movie news coming out thanks to panels at SDCC this year. Is it important? Of course! The proper choosing of actors for Gears of War for instance could make or break the film. A current fan favorite to be in the film is Dwayne Johnson, who was also chosen by the film's screenwriter. However, neither the fans nor the screenwriter really have much say over casting and so it appears that Johnson will not be in the Gears film at all as director Len Wiseman doesn't want to have any ties to the Doom movie.

Speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con he ran through the reasons they would not be casting Johnson, and probably made the action star feel pretty bad while doing it. "A Doom connection would not be smart for us," Wiseman validly said. He then went on to add a little backhanded insult by saying the he would not choose an actor by throwing "a bunch of strongmen into the ring and see who comes out victorious… I'm looking for an actor for the role and then [I'll] put him into shape. I'm always thinking who could play the best Marcus. You want to get hooked into the character [first] and then all the amazing spectacle."

Dude, your last movie was Live Free or Die Hard, which was an awesome action film, but hardly puts you on a pulpit to reject The Rock as an actor. In my opinion Johnson is by far one of the best action stars out there, and since so far Marcus' range of emotion has been from gruff to gruffer I'm not seeing where the issue would be. Of course I secretly heart the Doom movie as a guilty pleasure so I'm probably a bit biased.

Have you actually watched any matches Batista has had? If you could somehow make Fenix any drier any less care-worthy, you'd have Batista.

Even though its a bullshit reason not to cast him (seriously, Dooms a mostly forgotten movie by now) I personally am kind of glad Johnson/Rock wont be in the Gears movie because I honestly think it's kind of below him... the games have a pretty damn pathetic story even by video game standards, take that and throw in the standard game-to-movie-butchering filter and you have a huge stinker that will probably make Doom look like The Dark Knight.

Also I'd love to see the dude from Nightmare Armor Studios to play Marcus if he can get his acting skill up, this is him in this video

That vid was a hoot! Pretty good for a fan piece, but I'm not sure a casting studio would grant a nod based on it.

I doubt Dwayne will care about these comments. Plus, I am hoping that by the time Marvel Studios gets around to the scheduled Namor movie, they will have the foresight to cast him as the Sub Mariner. Dwayne has lost an incredible amount of weight and actually (now) has the physique of Namor. His improved acting chops combined with his success at playing the "Rock" role (arrogant tough-guy) will put him in good stead for the role.

What about Sam Worthington from Terminator Salvation, and the upcoming Clash of the Titans? I think he could make it a good movie, and shed the videogame movie curse

Do they not realize that the millions - AND MILLIONS - of The Rock's fans would pay top dollar to see the Great One lay the smaackdown on the rudy-poo, candy asses of the Locust? Can I continue to drop references to past catch phrases in this paragraph? METAL GEAR!?

What? That's like saying we're not casting Daniel Radcliff in any movie about magic and school because it reminds audience about a certain lightning scarred glasses wearing boy...

they just might as well recruit the rock. a gears movie would just entail guns and gore and chainsaws - awful but entertaining.

I personally think he'd be better cast as Anya.
And Daniel Radcliff will be Cole Train, and will chainsaw bayonette Locust with his wand.

The rock ain't a bad actor at all. He is mediocre, and acting per muscle mass is on the high side, which makes him twice as good for a gears of war movie.

How many times do I have to repeat myself? Ron Perlman must be cast as lead in any movie where an older asskicking grim&gritty badass is needed. There should be a law about that.

@Quistnix: Maybe not as Marcus, but I fully endorse the notion of Ron Perlman being in as many movies as possible... also, The Rock's a crappy actor plain and simple. Besides even when the Gears movie does suck... it will, we all know it will I doubt Wiseman will care much... he gets to go home and have sex with Kate Beckinsale.

I hope they don't fuck it up, casting-wise. It's not hard to pick 3 beefy action stars who look similar to the COG guys.

Obviously, Lester Speight HAS TO BE Cole. I mean, if he doesn't play him, I wouldn't even want to watch the stupid fuckin movie.

"Is there any doubt about Lester Speight as Cole?"

I was just thinking the exact same thing. He already does the voice for Cole and really, he looks just like the fucking guy! Plus he is a pretty good actor.

Fenix: Batista
Dom: Dwayne Johnson/Franky G
Cole: Ving Rhames/Michael Clarke Duncan
Baird: Alan Tudyk/Ryan Reynolds/Ryan Gosling/James Callis(that one's in there for me lol, he's one of my fav actors)
Carmine: Seth Green/Breckin Meyer/Michael Cera
Victor Hoffman: Tommy Lee Jones/Kurt Russell

I couldn't think of anyone else that would fit Fenix. But I think any of these actors would do an awesome job.

@LOLface - Lester Speight would be the only fit for Cole. He does his voice, looks just like him, and already is an actor.

I agree that Dwayne Johnson would be a great Dom, but I think he'd be a great Marcus Fenix as well.
