When we heard about a new Metroidvania-style XBLA game coming from Epic Games and Chair, our ears perked up. It's been awhile since we've had a good side-scrolling adventure game, hasn't it?

Chair's Donald Mustard met with us to tell us a bit about his latest title, Shadow Complex, and it was there that we discovered that this great-looking, robust platformer would only be 1200 Microsoft Points. Really? This game looks to be worth $20 or more, as far as I'm concerned. Hats off to them for the generous price.

We also chatted about speed runs and advanced weaponry, as you'll see in our video below. The most interesting weapon we saw was a foam gun, which lets you totally blanket an enemy in quick-hardening foam. Haven't you always wanted to buy one of those cans of foam and shoot it at someone? It's like that. Or you could use it to reach previously unreachable platorms by shooting a step stool for yourself. Crazy stuff. We can't wait to give it a try.

I've had the opportunity to play through about 4-6 hours of this game, and while I might deem it a game worthy of $15 (if having to rely on the game's auto-aim for targets not on the same plane is something you're into) calling it a Metroidvania, or comparing it to Contra as some have, is far too generous. This game completely lacks the scope and mostly lacks the branching exploration of a Metroidvania. Certain areas will present you with multiple pathways to allow you to dispatch of an enemy group slightly quicker than a head-on attack will, but these areas are infrequent and hardly substantial. So while the game is largely a linear sidescrolling shooter it lacks all of the twitchy intensity of Contra, which might be due to the clunkiness of trying to target enemies on a different plane of depth than the player (who appear relatively frequently) with any sort of speed or reliability.

In short, do keep an eye out on this game (it may improve by launch, specifically the targetting), but I wouldn't call it a steal or get too excited about it yet. Anyone expecting an experience that will rival that of a Metroid or Castlevania will certainly be disappointed.

I'm cringing at his use of the buzzword "nonlinear."

I didn't see the foam gun in the video, even though it's mentioned as the dev's favorite weapon. That's kind of odd.

When I first heard about this game I wasn't sure it was something I would like... looking at it more and I'm starting to think I need to buy it.
