SDCC: Shadow Complex is your new Metroidvania photo

Chair's creative director Donald Mustard set out make the game he wanted to play, or at least inspire another developer to make something similar. He revealed his desire for a new Metroidvania style console game while showing us the upcoming XBLA title Shadow Complex.

"One of my favorite games ever was Super Metroid," Mustard told us. "To me, Metroid and Symphony of the Night are like a genre of game, like a first-person shooter or an RTS. We just don't see a lot of enteries into that genre of game and I've been waiting for years and years for someone to make a non-handheld Metroidvania game."

Because it wasn't happening, Mustard and those at Chair set out to do their own, Shadow Complex. He admits: "It wasn't happening, so when we finished Undertow, were were like 'let's just do it.'"

"I know we're not Japanese, but we'll try," Mustard jokes.  "Really, my super secret goal with this game is that other developers will see this and go 'we should make a game like this,' so I can play it. I mean, I know where all the hidden stuff is."

Look for our full preview of Shadow Complex from the 2009 San Diego Comic-con later today.

Metroidvanias are like the freak folk of games: a super-specific genre term that essentially means nothing.

Old news is old?

We've kinda known it's a Metroidvania game since E3, and i've read the quote about Mr.Mustard wanting an up to date Metroidvania kinda game...

Sorry to be such an arsehole about it.

I love Metroid and Castlevania games, so this looks like it would be just the kind of game I could really get into, but I do not have a 360 and have no intention of buying one.
If Shadow Complex comes to the PS3 that would be really awesome!
Is there any reason why it could not? The game is not being published by Microsoft is it?

@Mace - Well since Undertow is only on the 360 it might be a budget thing. If this sells well I'm sure they would consider it, but its up to both the cost to produce plus how comfortable their small team is with developing on the PS3, which doesn't sound like it is at all.

This is still not appealing to me that much but in the end it probably will.

I'm excited to play the game...but being my new Metroid or Castlevania?...Good luck with that goal. I have a hard time believing it'll live up to that hype.

I like this guy, he's clearly passionate about making a game in this genre that he wants fans to really enjoy. I hope he lives up to those lofty goals!

I remember playing this with Mustard at E3, and boy doe sit look like fun. He actually showed me a fully upgraded main character, and there's some really cool mechanics at play. It looks like it will follow the mold of having a super-powered character where egtting around the world become insanly easy near the end.
