SDCC: SAW director bringing Castlevania to the big screen photo

While we're not sure if we needed a Castlevania live-action film, this is an interesting twist -- James Wan, best known for his work on the SAW franchise, will be directing the Paul W.S. Anderson produced film.

While it's early on in the project, Wan tells Bloody-Disgusting that he'll be working on the script with a writer, giving it his own twist.

"This will have my stamp on it, which Konami is very excited about," he says.

If you're concerned that Hollywood is ready to twist another of your videogame classics into some cringe-worthy flashy popcorn flick, you might want to give Wan the benefit of the doubt. It sounds like he just might "get it." Speaking to Bloody-Disgusting, he talks of a "high stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline, and the cool anime-like characters."

Oh, and it'll be sexy. With a whip.

"For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain," he explains, "and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place -- The Vampire Killer Whip."

Sonia's a sexy and dangerous Belmont! Too bad she's not canon anymore! WAY TO RUIN THE MOVIE BEFORE THE SAW GUY WAS GOING TO MAKE IT GOOD, IGA.

I thought this was canceled (/wrists).

I haven't enjoyed any of the Saw films except "II". Anyone with me?

This isn't going to start or end well, and I don't have high hopes for what's in between.

everything sounds good except the "sexy" part... I really don't want another Twilight hero from Dawson's Creek. How about someone who's tough and rough, you know, from slaying hundreds of vampires?

Today's actors are all ???ing Final Fantasy Male characters pulled from modeling magazines. I sure miss the old days of hero actors...

I liked the first Saw but remember walking out of Saw II. Something about a pit of hypodermic needles seemed...stupid.

"Gothic action". So I take it we're not going to see Simon Belmont in his iconic orange miniskirt? Either way, what better way to pick up the rest of the Twilight demographic. All in all, I'm not really upset about it because the Castlevania franchise is so established, a godawful movie would only benefit it slightly. And then we'd all have something to rag on for years to come.

I remember hearing that comics writer Warren Ellis was involved with a Castlevania project. Wonder if it's this or the game that Kojima announced at E3.

Why, please tell me why, every time f*ckinwood takes a game and wants to make a movie we hear: "It will be great. We have super director. We have great script" and then we are all hyped. Every one of us says: "this will be FIRST movie on a game that will be good, belive it!". But... in the end it is always the same. So tell me why do we still fall for this trick? WHY!?

Am I supposed to be excited about this?

"focuses on the gothic storyline, and the cool anime-like characters"
"as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain"
"his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place"

Saw director in my Castlevania movie? First of all a live action movie of Castlevania seems crappy, then a director who makes gore movie? I don't think so.

18 rated Castlevania?

Count me in. :D

If they're gonna fuck the source material in the ass, they may as well do it with as much dismemberment as possible.

I really don't have high hopes for this movie at all because it's just another video game movie, and those never turn out good. Odds are I'll end up seeing it anyways becauseI love Castlevania, and I'll end up pissed off at the movie because it'll suck.

With the right creators a Castlevania movie could be great. I'm thinking The Name of the Rose meets The Fountain. Saw meets AVP is pretty much the exact opposite.
