Home #Uncharted

Yesterday, on the first public day of Comic-Con International in San Diego, Naughty Dog introduced a brand-new co-op mode for Uncharted 2 called "Gold Rush." It's playable at kiosks in the Sony booth on the show floor, though I imagine that you'll be waiting in line for a while if you want to try it out.

In the video below the fold, Naughty Dog PR man Arne Meyer explains how Gold Rush works. You can see it for yourself, too, since the video includes off-screen gameplay footage from a match in the "Plaza" map (yep, that's the one that was available for play in the first multiplayer beta).

Gold Rush has a team of human players joining together to face off against the computer. There's a treasure that pops up in a random place on the map, and the idea is to go grab it and bring it to a treasure chest (which seems to be at a fixed location). It appears that the CPU is trying to prevent the human team from "capturing" the treasure; at the end of each round, the treasure's location will change.

After spending some time with the beta last month, and seeing this new mode, it's obvious to me that nothing about the multiplayer portion of Uncharted 2 is "tacked on." Naughty Dog is serious about multiplayer, and it truly seems like they're bringing their 'A' game with both the multi- and single-player parts of the game.

If you happen to be at SDCC, check out the Uncharted 2 kiosks, because you'll get a voucher for a Navarro skin (he was in the original Uncharted) that can be used in the sequel's multiplayer mode. The wait from now until October 13th seems interminable...

On the contrary: Gold Rush is just Plunder from the beta last month, with computer opponents rather than real ones, making the mode in fact, "tacked on".

Oh, and let's try to get that headshot implemented, Naughty Dog. I don't feel like shooting my opponent 10 times in the head before he goes down.

Hey Solid, read up on the difference between "tacked on" and "changed / improved".

This looks cool, cannot wait for Uncharted.

So buying this over Modern War 2, even avoiding that expensive turd, it's gonna be an expensive holiday season!

HOT! the first one is one of the best ps3 games, i'm pretty excited about this one, even though they got rid of that chick.

How is removing real opponents "improved", Chocolate? The rounds are shortened drastically with this re-working. If they leave both modes in, great. It'll sate players looking for short or long matches. But if they don't and strip it back to Gold Rush only, then it is not tacked on, but in fact stripped away.

I'm not saying however I don't want to play this--I do--just as soon as Sony lowers the two year-old Uncharted 1 to a reasonable price.

So two teams fighting over to capture a flag and bring it back to their base, the team with the most flags win. Got it. Keeps the action in one nice tight area instead of being spread out.

I'm going to have to balance this between Killzone 2. Suddenly I'm really getting into online gaming thanks to the PS3.

I'm enjoying it very much!

Solid, since when is changing something "tacking it on"? - they've obviously looked into it and decided it would be better as a co-op vs AI mode - so as far as ND are concerned it's "improved"

I mean they're not going to think "this mode's quite good, but you know would make it not so good? changes, rah rah rah etc!"

It's a personal preference, if you think it's not as good as it was, then, uh, you can, uh, have a cry i suppose, or whatever - to be honest I don't care. But "tacked on" it is not.

On a seperate note, I bought uncharted 1 a while back and my PS3 wouldn't play it?! - Wierd huh? God knows why? I bought it pre-owned and my PS3 is a launch model (mmmm PS2 compat) so you'd think they're both about the same age? Very weird. Can't remember the error message. Only game it's ever done it with.

I thought they were cribbing the Gold Rush mode from Bad Company for a sec there. That's my favourite online mode from any game!

@Discarded
Glad you're enjoying your onlne gaming, I've only been doing it since the release of the current generation of consoles and it's changed my perception of gaming completely. I love it!

It really should be a day one purchase for a lot of PS3 owners. It is for me, just deciding which preorder bonus I want with it.

@Autumn

I was usually the type to shy away from games that demand a massive time investment or have absolutely no end, but I continually find the hours wasting away on Killzone every night now. I'm even going to spend a tenner on a map pack! Never thought i'd see the day...

I still wouldn't pay for online play, but I see what kind of fun i've been missing. Cant wait for Uncharted and Fat Princess!

Um, in case it wasn't clear, guys, this is a new multiplayer mode. In other words, Plunder isn't going away.

Anyone want to help me choosing between Uncharted 2, Borderlands, and Alpha Protocol? I'm really hyped in these games better than MW2.
