SDCC: New Resident Evil movie is 3D, start of new trilogy photo

Shock Till You Drop has nabbed an exclusive interview with film direct Paul W.S. Anderson, where they've learned that Resident Evil: Afterlife will be following the "new" 3D fad. You know, the fad that movie makers had in the early nineties and have now suddenly decided is unique again.

Further to that, the film will be the start of a brand new trilogy, even though Milla Jovavich is still in it:

"I always envisioned Resident Evil as a trilogy of films," explains Anderson. " "And we've been very lucky where it's a trilogy where the audience has built and built. I wanted to kick off a brand new trilogy. I'm really excited we're doing it [in 3D] and we're using the same camera system [James] Cameron used for Avatar. There are a lot of exciting things about this one. I don't regard it as Resident Evil 4, I regard it as a re-tooling and rebirth of the entire franchise."

Seriously, why did this ludicrous 3D craze ever come back? I guess that's the last of my worries, considering the fact that a new Resident Evil movie is coming in the first place, 3D or not. That explains the single white wolf I heard last night, howling at the moon before dying a sullen and mournful death.

Hum, good luck.

Have you ever watched a movie at the cinema in 3-D ? It's a helluva lot more impressive now than the headache-inducing 3-D films of yore were. Coraline was pretty fantastic in 3D, even if it was a play to charge 35% more for tickets.

The only gripe I have about 3-D is that they don't fully utilize the effects throughout the film, they really only use them for about the first half hour or so, it seems - unless I am just getting used to it.

God damnit, Milla Jovavich is the worst actress in the world. She needs to stay the hell away from the Resident Evil series.

Let me add, that content goes a long way with 3-D. Resident Evil in 3D ? No thanks.

Freddy's Dead gives me warm memories of putting on the 3D glasses and watching the flare smoke come out of the TV screen. It was awesome when I was a kid!

How about they take MJ out and just write a script based on the the actual games. First movie is mansion. Then you get the first half of nemisis combined with the first half of two for the second movie, then the other half of 2 and 3 for the third movie. There anderson, you got the movie pretty much written for you, just play the games. Also, like jim mentioned in podtoid at one point...you cant kick zombie dogs unconcious.

I know Dimly doesn't like Milla, but I don't think I'm watching the Resident Evil movies for their acting talents. I was wondering about the cliffhanger that RE3's movie left. The Army of Alice?

Why do companies keep giving Paul Anderson money to make movies?IMO,he is really no better of a director than Uwe Boll, only difference is the budget.

It came back because of a lot of factors, not the least that it will become massive after Avatar.

Milla's in all the movies 'cause she's married to Paul Anderson.

3D's a novelty to trick people into paying extra at the multiplex.

Any more questions?

Some of the new 3D films really gain something from the addition of 3D, Bolt, Coroline and UP! all come to mind. Others not so much, coughmybloodyvalentinecough. Because of that, I don't see a new RE film gaining anything of value from 3D.

How many wolves must die????

Seriously though, RE is dead. Both as a video game franchise and as a movie franchise. Neither is fun or interesting anymore.

I was hoping the RE film series had died.

One was okay the first time. Two was sort of entertaining the first time. Three sucked. Looking back they all kind of just plain suck.

I don't want anymore even if they are going to be in 3D!

Modern 3D methods is waaaay beyond the old school 3D stuff. I don't think I would have enjoyed Beowulf half as much if it wasn't in 3D. Also, the directors using it don't seem to be doing the arbitrary, "Characters randomly poke things at the screen" scene that a lot of the old 3D movies did.

Okay, Paul, you did three crap-tastic RE films. Please, make this next one good. Hell, I'd even settle for mediocre. Just please include more zombies and scares and less amnesiac Milla kung fu jump kicking hell hounds.

I don't see how a trilogy can be functional if the third film ended on a cliffhanger. Actually, I'd scratch the word "cliffhanger" from that last sentence, as it implies people actually care what happens next..

Maybe they're trying to stave off the Saw/Halloween way of sequeling, but either way I have no idea why this movie franchise would need a reboot. So far its been a rather dumb, yet passable series. Good for a brainless saturday night when you dont want to think about anything..

I guess now we'll be seeing the same degree of entertainment from here to come, except with more tentacles flying in your face.

@Jim Sterling:: I read an article on a tech website about RealD (which is what the Disney 3D movies, and I'm sure the Resident Evil flick will be using). Old school stereoscopic vision was done by using that craptacular color filtering (cyan and red) which was called anaglyph. It sucked.

The RealD technology does some wizardry with the images and has special glasses that are polarized (similar to sunglasses. The two lenses are polarized differently in the 3D glasses they use. The left lens only lets in what the left eye should see, and the right lens only lets in what the right eye should see. This isn't much different from the colored glasses approach, except that the colored glasses had a stronger middle ground, where both eyes would lose images that were too close in color to both red and cyan. The new 3D glasses also don't have a color tint to them, which preserves the quality of the original image.

I think the 3D craze now is actually reasonable, compared to the anaglyph films of the past. There's still some problems with the new tech, but it's on the right track. If you get a chance, Jim, you should try to get out to the theater and check one out. The movie will probably suck (I saw Beowulf), but you'll see that it's not as clunky as you'd imagine. I skeptical as hell when I got suckered into seeing Beowulf, but was pleasantly surprised that the RealD tech has potential. Now if we can only get GOOD movies to use that shit (and no, Resident Evil: Afterlife will not be that movie).
