SDCC: Master Chief's story is going to continue photo

Halo: Reach is most likely going to rock all of our faces far past midnight, but there's a small part of me that yearns to know the rest of Master Chief's tale. Not that Halo 3 ended on a massive cliffhanger, but (SPOILERS!) Master Chief was just floating around in space at the end there. It seems that the guys behind the Halo franchise agree that Master Chief's story isn't dead.

At the San Diego Comic-Con, Frank O'Connor, the franchise development director for 343 Industries (and basically all things Halo) said "At the end of Halo 3, and cover your ears if you haven't played it, Master Chief is in cryosleep. Cortana has sent a rescue signal, and they are orbiting a strange world. We'd have to be the world's biggest assholes to not follow through on his story."

He forgot to mention it would also have to be the world's biggest idiots to walk away from a franchise character as big as the Chief.

I feel like I'm one of the few people who actually likes halo. I can't wait for Reach but I really hope 343 doesn't drop the ball and just start pumping out halo games to cash in on it.

It's become so fashionable to take shots at Halo but it is in fact still one of the most addictive multiplayer shooters of all time.

I'm not convinced that the general populous is clamoring for the Master Chief in particular. Halo 3: ODST sold fine, and Halo: Reach will do at least as well. Yeah, it's nice that they're still thinking about what happens to the Chief after the events of Halo 3, but it's more the Halo name that sells than the Master Chief himself.

@Dexter345

I have to disagree with you. The Halo mythos really benefits having a single focal character to point to. ODST had an interesting campaign, but it wasn't nearly as interesting switching between members of a squad as it is playing as a single savior figure. In Reach your squad mates looks a little bit more interesting, but the main character is basically the same; a quiet 'newguy.'

I think the savior persona of Master Chief really compliments the "rush out with your balls out" sort of gameplay, and I think that the single-player benefits from this.

Ultimately it comes down to multiplayer, but I think a lot of people underestimate the value of Halo's single player campaigns for sales. I honestly think Master Chief might make a million or two copies difference, especially if 343 has yet to prove that they can handle the Halo series effectively.

I am convinced there's a demand for Master Chief. People go apeshit over him and he is popular. Perhaps your opinion is based on how negative the blogging community is with regards to halo in general and not sales figures.

Of course the longevity of halo is down to the multiplayer. I'm not a fan of the halo series but I can't deny that Bungie are fantastic when it comes to multiplayer and listening to it's fans.

Will they call the 4th installment "4"? (yes, the effort Bungie is putting into Reach is number worthy but bare with me on this) I don't know. Would seem odd that for such a historic series would still continue with numbers given that, even so we know it wouldn't end and that it ended in a cliffhanger, the current story of Halo is done. Would seem odd to see a Halo game numbered without Bungie. Perhaps they can continue numbers by adding a subtitle?

Meh, Masterchump is one of the worst things about halo - apart from the floaty / slidy physics, the stupid weapons and the way too strong armour.

Oh and the stupid sword thigns.

I'm more hyped for Reach than I am for Halo "4". The idea of being just one Spartan in a team with 5 other badass Spartans is more appealing to me than just being one Spartan alone taking on armies. I was never really attached to Chief I guess, but I'd like to see the end of his story.

@ sexualchocolate and cowsick, why don't you both wind your fucking necks in? I own a 360, I can't stand halo either, but that doesn't give me the right to slag of the fan base, I just get on with my life, it's not for me to understand why people like it, just fucking accept that they do. Both of you come across as desperate attention whores. Comment on the game, that's fine, but your opinions on the player base are designed to offend, both of you need to grow up.

Indeed Cowsick indeed, think you might have misinterpreted my *brofist*

I agree mostly...

...but early Halo games had a pretty positive influence on gaming, the whole "games need an online mode" thing is pretty sweet but it's been milked since then, and for such a mediocre (shit in my opinion) game it really does have a seriously hardcore following. Weird.

@ cowsick: I just clicked your name and saw that you've called xbox owners "xbots" in other recent stories. Clearly we have a fanboy on our hands. A PS3 fanboy, which as we all know is the worst kind to be.

How bout you man the fuck up, drop the 300 bucks on a new 360, and maybe even 200 on a Wii, and then you can play every game for all 3 consoles and not feel the need to leave such ridiculous comments. Obviously you're just upset that you can't enjoy something, oh, about 10 million people have enjoyed over the past 9 or so years.

And saying Halo has had a negative influence? WTF does that mean? So now making quality games means you're having a negative influence? What are you, a fucking Nazi? Yes, other, better games do exist, but if you fail to see the appeal nor the quality of the Halo series you do so at your own peril. Shame you've been missing out on some good times.

I'm gonna guess the real problem is that you're an immature little bitch who doesn't have 3 friends to play and enjoy the campaign with. Grow up.

As a huge EX-fan of Halo.
I have to agree with sexualchocolate and cowsick
Halo is mediocre at best, and it's sad to see +100 thou people online in it still when there are way way way better games to play. Personally, I switched to PC from xbawks, and after playing such amazing games like tf2, l4d1+2, bfbc2, cs:s, hl2ep:1+2, Fallout 3, farcry 2, i could go on for a while, you get the point. As soon as I PLAYED team fortress 2 the first time, halo was dead to me. and it always will be. Unless their releasing Halo 4 on pc, your not gonna see my ass on it. As a reference to my halo fandom douchery: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Halo3/Default.aspx?player=xOatmealNinjaxX
Also, if your still playing Halo after that bullshit 2 hour $60 dollar expansion *ahem* ODST *ahem* Just bend over and let M$ stick it in your ass once more. It probably won't hurt as bad this time.

Hype accounts for sales, without a doubt but there are more people playing halo online than any game as old as halo.

Hype may make you buy a game but it certainly doesn't make you keep playing it. Surely good gameplay and a fun online mode keeps people playing.

You may not like it. You may not be able to adjust your jaded view to accept it and you certainly can't stop it.

Halo is popular and good. I don't like it but I'm mature enough to appreciate it.

And generally when people make a bad decision their forced to stick with it. Also, console wars have been going on since snes vs.genisis get over it. OhMAHGAD he called me an xbot. he MUST be a ps3 fanboy.

As for having a negative influence on gaming; yeah it's pretty annoying these days to have standard recharging health in every goddamn game, ever. Also, every damn game stars a silent protagonist.

I also love the comment you made in there about inFamous 2 being another "AAA exclusive", as if the first one was actually anything near a AAA game. Funny that you should deride Halo while you're championing a sequel to one of the most derivative, unoriginal games to come out in recent times. Sure, the game was excellent, but it also was completely unoriginal and really brought nothing new to the table except another boring hero.

I can't stand how anytime there's an article about Halo all the fanboys come out the woodwork and start bashing shit. You see cowsick, if you had one ounce of intelligence inside that tiny little pea brain of yours, you might have noticed that my avatar is none other than Kratos, face of God of War, a Sony franchise, a real AAA franchise, might I add.

Looking at the metacritic, we see that inFamous only has an 85. Now, I don't put too much stock into stuff like that, but it's clearly not AAA when compared to other games on the console, seeing as how it's not even in the top 20 highest rated games on that particular console.

I'm not going to sit here and argue with you about the scores of one game or the quality of that game in general. I've already said it's an excellent game, very well made, extremely well "crafted". It's just not that original or mind blowing or, well, different. It does not stand out from the crowd and certainly wasn't and won't be responsible for moving consoles anytime soon.

For the record I own all 3 consoles plus 2 highly capable gaming PCs. I play the best games on each of them to the best my abilities and means. Get a better job or save your money and you too can get yourself on the path of enlightenment.

I love Halo. It is still one of the all time best FPSs, and it's one of the few reasons to own an Xbox. Master Chief should return and the series should continue with him in a starring role.
It's a mascott series that's meant to be milked a bit. Sony would do well to find themselves a front man as popular as the Chief. The powers that be at MS had better pray that 343 does a decent job of it though, or fans might drop the series like Crash Bandicoot.
