Scribblenauts the start of a 'mass-market franchise' photo

Warner Bros. has big in things in store for 5th Cell's long-awaited DS puzzler Scribblenauts. The game, released today, has been compared to Professor Layton by the publisher, with a belief that it will gain mass-market appeal and herald the start of a whole new franchise.

"The stylized look of Scribblenauts offers something fresh and friendly that doesn’t appear intimidating," says marketing manager Phil Lamb. "That combined with the addictive gameplay means that it will definitely strike a chord with casual, female and maybe even ‘grey’ gamers.

"What Scribblenauts offers is something akin to Nintendo’s Professor Layton -- an addictive and challenging game that has real mass-market appeal all wrapped up in a uniquely stylized package. We fully expect this title to be the start of a brand new franchise in the DS puzzle market."

I am certainly glad to see Warner is supporting this game. 5th Cell never had much luck when THQ was in charge of its games, mostly because THQ was very bad at promoting them. Lock's Quest barely got so much as a shred of marketing, so I truly hope that Warner is serious about giving these awesome developers a big spotlight. Time shall tell.

Now go out and buy Scribblenauts, for God's sake.

this game has a little too much hype so far. I'm looking forward to it but we'll see. I drink Kool aid for no one!

This game is at times either easy as hell or cruel and unforgiving.

But still kind of fun.

I bought it and am now about to begin playing it. What's funny is that the last game I bought back in June, and the game that is in my DS, is Lock's Quest! I still have yet to beat that game though.

The game is a flawed yet very interesting experience. In terms of a franchise though, I don't see how future games are going to provide any more innovation, given the thoroughness of this game's dictionary and that there is already a lot of repetitiveness in the current 200+ levels. A future DS version, likely featuring a refined control scheme, will have critics calling it what the first one should have been. However, I can see Warner Bros. publishing what would be considered the definitive version on the Wii, with the problems and limitations of the original game overcome by superior hardware. Add an improved editor and online level sharing as seen with Little Big Planet - this game will be a hit all over again.

It's Warner Bros. If anyone knows how to get people to know something, I would suspect it would be them.

I wouldn't say it has to much hype. Maybe in internet gamer world (eg - us) but not so much in the general public.
I think any game we deem worthy should be publicised. Anything to get the general masses interested in and take the focus off the whole "Imagine" series.

Am I happy that Warner Bros wants to turn Scribblenauts into a series?

This is hands down one of the funniest and most creative (on the end of the player especially) games I ever played. If there's a sequel, all I want is a cart with twice as many new puzzles.

Maybe they are referring to aliens who enjoy video games? I bet aliens would fucking love scribblenauts.

Scribblenauts seems neat, but will it really have the appeal of Layton? I doubt it. Scribblenauts' world is charming, but there's really no identifiable characters/setting outside of the rooster headed nameless kid.

Layton is feature film worthy, but I CAN see a viable television series on Public Access, though.

I can see how this could be popular and quickly gain mass market appeal. I can't understand how you would make Scribblenauts a franchise. Although I have yet to pick up my copy [I need to wait until saturday :(], I don't quite understand exactly how enough of an upgrade worthy could be made on a game that gives you the dictionary and tells you you can use anything in it.

I will be first in line for a 3D scribblenauts though :).

I'm interested to see what they can do with this as a series.

220 levels is alot more then one would think, and mastering them is certainly no small feat as the game goes on.

BOught my copy today, can\t wait to see what else is in store for me.

Seriously, no console/platform is worth buying just for one game. Especially this game, it's not that special. Once you get over the fact that there are so many objects to summon, the actual gameplay isn't even that good. Despite being over 20k objects, there are probably about 20 or so different functions that they all can do. Some items don't even do anything. This game seriously is quantity over quality. You MIGHT end up enjoying the entire game, but I personally felt like I experienced everything this game had to offer after only a couple hours of playing it. So if you don't even own a DS, you need to seriously give it some thought before you spend all that money over one game.

I'd call the gameplay whatever the opposite of addicting is, it starts out really cool and then fizzles out as you realize how how much shallower the game is than it appears and the controls become frustrating. I don't see where this series can really go with future iterations but if they want to try, more power to them.

Even with it's crappy control scheme, it's one of the funnest DS games I've ever played. An hour ago I had roped some hawks to a velociraptor that Satan was riding and had him fight an army of Rick Astlys wielding SMGs.

Yes the gameplay is a tad shallow, but it really does come down to how creative YOU want to get, and with the plethora of options given it caters to almost anybody.

What the fuck?

Anyway, I am not sure about this as a series but I do think it deserves some good sales numbers. The action puzzles can be really frustrating sometimes.

Its pretty fun, as a word-y, to come up with synonyms to complete the challanges multiple times.

Sure, I'll take a series, TV show, Webcomic and a reality TV show on youtube.

It's kind of brilliant and a blast to play, but the controls are super wonky.

I think grey gamers are quite clearly greymen. You know, Martians, Extraterrestrials, Aliens. I had no idea they were a viable market segment for games!

I never made it past the title screen last night. I did unlock all but two of the title screen levels, but I never even touched the story part of the game.

My only beef with the game is that I had a cat in an oven for at least 5 minutes, and the cat was fine when I took it out. That's not realistic at all.
