Scribblenauts sells a million photo

It looks like 5th Cell's Scribblenauts for the Nintendo DS isn't just entertaining us media types and "core" crowd on the toilet. Earlier this afternoon, publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that the colorful, uh, "word" game has sold over one million units and "became on of the hottest games of the holiday season."

Speaking via the press release, WBIE present Martin Tremblay called Scribblenauts a "strong original brand," and added that WBIE looks "forward to bringing consumers more quality gaming experiences as part of our portfolio game strategy." Good. A portfolio gaming strategy that focused on delivering bad games wouldn't make us happy campers, or at least inclined to give WBIE's stuff a spin on the toilet (or the bus or wherever).

Fix the controls and I will reconsider.

It has a lot of problems but it is still a fun and original game.

I still have my rooster hat!

I didn't realize you could summon sales charts in the game!

Well, even though Scribblenauts had mixed reviews and didn't quite live up to the hype, I'm happy to see that it was this successful, and that 5th Cell got proper attention they deserve at this point.

"took awhile, lol"

The game came out on September 15th, so that's like less than 5 months ago. You think that's awhile?

@x251: DS games that don't have a huge license behind them usually don't even sell 1 million copies, let alone in 5 months.

Hopefully they take the money and make something worth having a million sales.

Took a while? Some games are lucky just to break 500k. As far as I'm concerned, Scribblenauts did a lot better than I thought it would have, considering the mixed reviews.

Anyway, I hope this success leads to a much improved sequel. Scribblenauts had a lot of potential, it just needed its gameplay elements to be implemented better.

I recommended this game to anyone with a DS or looking to buy a present for someone with a DS and I even gave a copy to my little sister for her birthday. I know I'm not the only one either, so I'm only mildly surprised by this news. Scribblenauts rocks!

I was one of that million. I brought it home, tried to wrestle with the awful controls and finnicky rules, and it was sitting right back in Gamestop a few days later.

I was in the same boat as HEL105, except mine went out on Goozex.

Goes to show you that a strong marketing push will move units even if the game is mediocre. Third parties complaining about low sales of good games need only to look at Scribblenauts.

but that just makes the marketers of 5th Cell look like douchebags giving a bad image to the company too.

This game was such a dissapointment to me. Waited for months, put it away for good after about an hour. Fun to mess around in, but not much else.

A disappointment, but it still sold. Most of those are to young kids to help them spell I hope.

It didn't have a strong marketing push. Blame all the video game enthusiasts/writers who hyped it to the high heavens at E3. That's the reason why so many people jumped on the game so early.

For what it is, it's solid. It has definite problems, but the audience for this game (the little'uns and the non-gamers) absolutely love it. My young cousins played around in the "sandbox" mode for hours, and a non-gaming lady friend of mine who has never played a single video game for more than 5 minutes at a time toyed around with the game for close to an hour non-stop. That's something.

I got to use a bear mauling a man to solve a puzzle, that makes this game a winner. To hell with the haters.

A milli! A Milli! A Milli!

Glad something as oddball as this sold a million. But it doesn't change the fact that its controls are broken and the game gets old soon.

Well I'm glad to see an unusual game make a profit. Scribblenauts was a hit-and-miss game for many people. I liked the concept but I sadly had to put the game away after my character died for the kabillionth time because I happened to accidentally touch one part of the screen which sent him flying into oblivion. Having said that, the stages which worked, worked really well. So I'm happy that this will spur them on to make another Scribblenauts, this time with BETTER CONTROLS.

I bought Scribblenauts and quickly got tired of the terrible controls. So I thought, why not see what you can do cheat-wise on a NOT R4 (like turn off the item limit then put rabbits on the screen)? Turned out there was a user-created patch to move with the d-pad! Not perfect, but it made the game playable for me again.

i was a little disappointed with this game(not enough to get rid of it - but enough that it sits unfinished..), but im really glad it was a success... it's a great starting point for a sequel that could resolve the issues and be a really solid game.

I'm glad. It was fun while it lasted. It was kinda killed by it's own ambition though.
