Scribblenauts getting a full UK localization photo

British? Looking forward to Scribblenauts? Worried that you'll have to write "pants" instead of "trousers" or "The UK Office" instead of "The Office"? Fear thee not, gentle limey friends, for the wonderful DS game (released in the US today) will be designed specifically for Brits when it launches in the UK.

The 20,000+ word vocabulary is to be converted into Her Majesty's Royal English, as confirmed by Warner UK this week.

"Do you know your eggplant from your aubergine? How about your binky from your dummy? You may think you know your pants from your trousers but if you find yourself in the US, you'd be going for a very different look," stated the publisher. "Fear not mistaken pants-over-trouser-wearers, as Scribblenauts developer, 5th Cell, has gone out of its way to localise the UK release of Scribblenauts to include words specifically for the UK market.

"Faucets, popsicles, sidewalks, diapers and, of course, the mess that is football and soccer, will confuse British DS owners no more ..."

This is great news, of course, and quite necessary. While men of the world such as I are fluent in both English and American, those Brits who are ignorant of everything outside their own coastline would be left floundering without a full translation. Rest assured that there will be no cultural barriers with Scribblenauts. Hooray!

Maybe if you Brits would learn to speak English like the rest of us this wouldn't be a problem

Being Australian, I appreciate this. Having played the US version, I was quite surprised I could type Roo to get Kangaroo. Now it is just a matter of getting dropbears in, and all will be dandy.

Being Canadian, I'm a little frustrated. Why does everything from internet Browsers to videogames not acknowledge Canadian English as it's own variation?! It's not American English or UK English...somewhere inbetween. Get on this, internet!! I spell colour with a "u".

Making things to adapt to us instead of using the same version as everyone else? Now that's true British spirit.

This is pretty cool of them, despite how ridiculous British English is.

The US release already has four languages and accent marks on both sides of the keyboard. It would be disastrous if they didn't consider British English.

I will forever more call "American Football" Handegg. Thank you for that enlightenment.

I also love the ignorance from people saying American English is better, even though it's called English, from England.
If half of you even know where England is, of course. It's in the UK.
Go figure.

National Handegg League... that's going to be a little confusing. I've heard the game referred to as "gridiron" by a couple of Australians, not as clever but makes for a less confusing acronym.

@Jon B too,

What's with all of the people taking everything so seriously? Is this the National Take Everything Serious day in England?

I think you meant:
"Rest assured that there will be no english cultural barriers with Scribblenauts."
I think my english is decent enough to play this, but a shitton o people won't be able to experiment Scribblenauts.

I wonder if entering the phrase "fanny pack" in the UK version will get different results from the American version?

What the hell do they call faucets and sidewalks in the UK? I had absolutely no idea there was a difference there.

I actually never thought of this problem before. Good move 5th Cell, good move.

@Jetsetlemming:
Faucet = tap
Sidewalk = pavement

Well, I'm glad for the Brits, but what about the rest of EU? I live in Sweden & I sure as hell haven't been taught "English" in school & there's barely any English tv shows here either (or at least in the minority of minorities).

If the EU version is the same as the UK version, then I'm importing. Guaranteed.

@runtheplacered: I understand you mean to be light-hearted but the "We' beat/saved your asses in the war" joke is a horribly stale, unfunny cliché. I say this and I'm not even British.

@KoKoO Psy: Sorry, but you Aussies are alone on the thongs front. However, I believe that you, like us across the ditch don't refer to underwear or undies as pants.

Couldn't they of just merged both US and UK English together? They already have alternate words to summon the same objects.

@Johnny Justice,

So what if you didn't think it was funny? I did. My friends did. Why should I care if you didn't?

Talk about an overinflated self importance.

@runtheplacered: I never asked you to care. I was just trying to give an idea of why people may get annoyed over it, as some appear to be.

Anyway, this is getting silly. I mean why are we squabbling in a positive article about Scribblenauts? Yay Scribblenauts! :D

Not being funny or anything but don't bring up RL friends in an internet argument - it just makes you look like you don't really have any, just sayin'.

Cue you calling me a douche etc...

Yay Scribblenauts!
